Liverpool Agree £31m Alonso Deal in Barcelona Hotel: How Ironic, Don’t you Think?

XABI ALONSO’S Liverpool career looks set to come to an end after Real Madrid indicated they are willing to pay in the region of £30 million for his services.
Reds officials met with Real executive director-general José Ángel Sánchez yesterday afternoon as the Spanish giants stepped up their bid to finally bring an end to their summer long pursuit of Alonso.
The talks took place at Liverpool’s team hotel in Barcelona prior to last night’s 3-0 friendly defeat at the hands of Espanyol and though a deal was not struck enough progress was made for Real’s confidence to rise that agreement is not far off.
Rafa Benitez has insisted all along that he will not accept a knockdown offer for the Spanish playmaker despite Alonso having indicated that he is ready to leave Anfield and the Liverpool manager’s patience appears to be paying off as Real finally got closer to the kind of bid he is looking for. (Liverpool Echo)
Expect this all to be sorted by today, tomorrow at the latest. Fingers crossed. I have always been a huge Xabi fan but this is taking far too long and we will run out of time to find a replacement, unless Real give us Wesley Sneijder, please, pretty please! Make it so!

second and third then

agreed, lucas is not the answer. Both Sneijder and Aquilani have both had injury problems as of late, would prefer Alonso to stay. And where the hell did all these stories of Villa come from. The ’scum?’.

accept any player swap demand at least 2 of these 3, Vaar sneijdar huntelaar
if player swap is accepeted then only problem is no cash for other buys like Villa, silva mata aquilani, well maybe enough to buy aquilani.
However i do rate huntelaar vaart and sneijdar so i think any two of them in a swap deal is an amazaing deal considering how much real have paid.

Sneider will be going to Inter for 18 million pounds – Alonso will join Real, in his own words “for the better”. As fans, we don’t know what went on behind the scenes for Alonso to talk like this, but Benitez definitely wants to get rid of him, even though in public he’s saying otherwise.

Lucas was decent last night – him and stevie were our best players.
Agree that we need someone else with the money, I’m thinking more and more we’ll be in for a top level striker to partner torres in the home games and stevie will drop off into a more conventional cm role.
away from home, lucas would come in and stevie push on into the formation rafa played last season.
bring on Aguero/Villa…. **he hopes**

If this is true, Why then did Alonso play in the Espanyol game?….. Seems odd that they Liverpool or Real would risk injury to Alonso at this time ….. Plus papers still say that Liverpool wanting £30m for Alonso is a sticking point, Even you are saying a deal was not struck ……….. The saga drags on as the season start fast approaches …….. Why are we so slow in the transfer market is beyoned me
Ellyrie - August 3rd, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Sniejdar hasnt gone to inter so stop talking bollocks
Red not dead - August 3rd, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Donavan, I would imagine he played last night so Rafa could show he was in control and maybe to provoke Real from actually putting in an offer that LFC would accept. I agree this is taking too long but it would seem Rafa either needed the money from the sale or knowledge that a place would be required in midfield. Maybe today will see an end to the saga and we will get to know who the replacement(s) are be it Cattermole, silva, aquilani or Villa etc

Real Madrid have had an offer of €32 million accepted by Liverpool for Xabi Alonso and a pre-accord has been sealed that will see the player move back to Spain this week, according to a report.
A meeting between the two clubs in Barcelona at the weekend saw a thaw in the frosty stand-off, and with Los Merengues showing some goodwill, an agreement was reached, Sport state.
Liverpool were holding out for £30 million, while Madrid were keen to pay only €30million, but the rise of €2m has seen the Reds accept the offer.
