Youngster targeted by Rafa.

Sports - September 25, 2007

Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez remains a target for Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.

A tall, powerful, hard-working midfielder, Martinez’s game is viewed by Benitez as ideal for the rigours of the Premiership.

Despite a disappointing U21 European Championships with Spain, Benitez intends to move for Benitez if Real Madrid meet his asking price for Xabi Alonso. (tribalfootball.com)

Dubbed the new Alonso by the Spanish press, Javi Martinez is known to have an admirer in Rafa Benitez so no surprise he is being linked with a move for the 20 year old. The Atletico Bilbao man already has a decent amount of top level experience having missed just three La Liga matches in the past three seasons.

Big lad but surprisingly good on the ball apparently. Some sources quoting the Spanish club as wanting as much as £11m for his services, which on the face of it might not be a bad deal given the player’s age and undoubted potential.
