SOCCER 2009 - Espanyol Beat Barcelona 2-1

Barcelona are planning an audacious move for Manchester United defender Jonny Evans.
The La Liga club sounded out a move for Nemanja Vidic earlier this summer but were given short shrift by Sir Alex Ferguson.
Now Barcelona are set to turn their attentions to Northern Ireland centre-back Evans, who enjoyed a prolonged spell in the United first team last season.
Evans, 21, proved a capable deputy when Rio Ferdinand and Vidic were injured.

Don’t get me wrong, I think that Jonny Evans has a bright future and showed last term that he could be thrown into the deep end and come out the other side without drowning, but would Barcelona really attempt to sign the Northern Irish defender?

True the Catalan giants took Gerard Pique, a player I would like to go on record as stating a long time ago would come good, and made him into the impressive centre back he is today. Pepe Guardiola has a bit of a problem in terms of his ageing defence. Carles Puyol and Rafael Marquez have both seen better days and are both the wrong side of 30 but they don’t need to panic unnecessarily with the likes of Pique, Victor Sanchez and Henrique all coming along nicely.

Apart from anything else, I sincerely doubt Sir Alex would even consider such an offer for Evans as he himself needs as much back up as possible for arguably the best centre back pairing in Europe, or am I perhaps being a little biased?
