Liverpool Should Avoid Aquilani at All Costs: I Would Rather Stick with Lucas!
by Lee McAndrews on August 5th, 2009 289 words | 56 commentsWhy replace a inspirational visionary midfielder with a distinctly average injury prone Italian?

Surely we would not sell our most influential, consistent and best(?) player of last season and replace him with an injury prone Italian that at best is a good player, no, not brilliant, world class or amazing he is a better player of an average Roma team and his injury record is awful, to top it all off he is isn’t even into full pre-season training as he has just come back from holiday (sorry didn’t mean that) no you guessed it an injury! He has just had an ankle operation so wouldn’t be fit for the start of the season! So by the time he gets match fit, settled in and accustomed to the EPL it would be Christmas and he’d probably be injured!!!
Sure if he was world class and worth waiting for great! Go buy him but he simply isn’t! He’s nowhere near Xabi’s (R.I.P) ability, I can’t believe I’m gonna say this but I would rather he bought no one rather than waste money on him and play bloody Lucas.
Simple solution, option 1: buy another attacker who can float around anywhere up top and move Gerrard back. Option 2: buy a bloody good centre midfielder to replace the bloody good one we just sold!
There are many better options out there that we could acquire and Martinez looks like the best bet, has played more games in the last 3 seasons than Aquilani and he is only 20 years of age he’s young, quick, can tackle, tall, skillful and a great passing range – known as Xabi MKII – out with the old and in with the new!

With the greatest respect we have Lucas and Spearing and am sorry but Lucas is average and Spearing is not good enough to play for Liverpool, I want Spearing to do well but am sorry to say I think he might cut it at Wigan or someone but not Liverpool.
josh - August 5th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
christ are you think ? Have you ever eatched Aquilani ? he’s seen as the new Totti with Roma fans and is loved there. If you’re claiming he’s an average player then you clearly need a new job or stop writing crap on here.
Macca - August 5th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
course he’s seen as the new Totti he’s a local buy and Totti is coming to the end of his career, but just like Totti he would be better off staying at Roma for the rest of his career, plus i think it says good player in average team, he’s too injury prone for the EPL
Stevie G,G,G - August 5th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
I agree, he is ok but not the class we need to replace Alonso, to much of a gamble at that price! might as well sign Darren Anderton!
agger - August 5th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
i think rafa will buy the udinese midfielder goran ihler…he is much more better than aquilani n cheaper also
Days Of Dalglish Are Nearly Back - August 5th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
I think Sneijder is a better option than Aquilani. Has had a few injuries in the last few seasons as well. Javi Martinez is a great player and would be great buy but is a few years off being a direct Alonso replacement. Maybe Javi Martinez in, Lucas out and bring in Beckham on loan in Nov for 5-6months during the MLS break to add a bit more nouce and experience??????
Pool5 - August 5th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
josh…. Since u seem an expert, share your knowledge of aquilani with us all???
Macca good point, he is very very injury prone and another season maybe to prove he is over that before a big money move.
lvslfc - August 5th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
what the fuck are yous on about!!! before xabi went almost everyone on here were saying what a good replacement he would be but as soon as xabi leaves your saying hes not good enough. he is easily in contention to be the best central midfielder in italy and his style of play is perfect for the EPL. now after aquilani buy silva and lavezzi and were sorted!!!
josh - August 5th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Well he’s basically a more forward-thinking version of Alonso, with more pace, and a similar howitzer of a shot. He’s been injured fairly frequently and underwent an operation back in May. He will have a medical in Liverpool to see if he can handle the rigour of the Premier League. The player is around 6 foot, can play with both feet, plays a more box-to-box game ala Stevie G.
That enough for you pool5 ?!?!?!
Marty - August 5th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
I am sad to see Alonso leave, but it has been on the cards and best he goes if he is not happy.
I believe that Liverpool do need to bring a couple more in but I am concerned about Aquilani as an injury prone player can be both frustrating and costly. Look at Harry Kewell – he had talent but he was so injury prone he rarely played and cost Liverpool a lot of money if worked out ‘per game played’. Shame he never delivered as he promised so much. With regard to Lucas I do think we saw signs at the end of last season that maybe he is going to develop into a more than useful player, but as with Ryan Babel they now need to step up and prove it. I like Spearing but his small stature is a concern for me.

i want a change of system!! change to 4-4-2 with the signing of silva/aguero/villa and then we have a capable addaptable squad which can change formation
Anonymous - August 5th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
i told you!!! everyone wanted Aquilani when they really had no clue about who he was or how injured he got
Anonymous - August 5th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
honestly i think rafa is gone a bit crazy
an injury prone average italian for 18mill
or
Schneider for 14mill
i dont understand

I’m sure that is taken directly from a comment made by myself and another contributor!?!? are you using us as valid sources now???
Anonymous - August 5th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
rafa get in cambiasso on the cheap, or schnieder or van da vart (injury prone too tho)
there really isnt alot of options to replace xabi alonso unless u want to spend 40 mill on fabregas but he wudnt leave arenal unless its to spain so idk
DM - August 5th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
why not marcos senna for around half that price?????
KoPiTe - August 5th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
surely there is a better alternative, he is obviously a competent player to be in his national team come on it’s not as though he’s from the Faroe Islands. It’s always a gamble to pay that kind of money for some one who might be to fragile.

ezi - August 5th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
If aquilani is fit, he is one of the best in italy. I think Rafa know that. Thus, he is important to rotate among masch, lucas, spearing (if good enough), even gerard (he cant play in all liverpool games right???…). Then, we still need right midfielder (get lennon) to make kyut go back to the striker position…
9torres - August 5th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
haha, no worries matey, i should have put 2+2 together that it was you who i was talking to!
i hope what mick123 was saying is true (about Rafa deciding it was too much of a risk to go for Aquilani), and that he goes for Martinez, who he has been tracking for a number of years.
liverpooldian - August 5th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
1.don’t sign poulsen or aquilani
2.potential replacement for xabi that good enough maybe;
a)javi martinez
b)defour
c)cattermole maybe??he is english..
d)inler (never see him play before)..
3.please buy silva or he will be become our rival at MU
Macca - August 5th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Me too mate, can’t see the point of gambling that much cash
-lfc- - August 5th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
YOU ALL DO KNOW THAT HE DOESNT WANT TO COME TO LIVERPOOL?
right i guess not he he said it to the itailian media but the club (roma) dont want him so his only choice is liverpool
Stillontheperch.Fackt! - August 5th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
Best result of the season was obtained without Xabier Alonso.
He is a great player. Rafael Benitez is a great manager. I believe he is looking to increase the pace of the team as well as making Liverpool more attacking. With Mascherano looking like he’s staying the defensive portion of the team is in place.
If us gormless journo wannabies are aware of Aquilani’s suitability with regards fitness or tactically, then I suggest any doubters should Liverpool sign him can rest easy.
Signing any player to a lesser or greater extent represents somewhat of a gamble.
torrard - August 5th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Aquilani is just barely above average. We need a strong experienced midfielder in alonso’s place. (E.g. Cambiasso, Sneijder) And for the record Lucas is not a visionary. The kid has a long way to develop before the Reds can rely on him.
Ryan LFC - August 5th, 2009 at 5:03 pm

aquilani is joining liverpool if he passes the medical-test.
Danny - August 5th, 2009 at 5:07 pm
To be honest I can see rafa provin the lot of you wrong.. Rafa knows what he is doin an yes he might be injury prone.. but thats the point in havin medicals isnt it.. so if he is as you lot are sayin injury prone then he wont pass the medical! Me myself would rather see snijder or javi martinez, but these players play in the spanish league, a league rafa knows alot about so he will know of thes eplyers an obviously think aquilani is more suited to liverpool.
ONLY1KUYT - August 5th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
a bid has been accepted by roma yay!! i like the guy he isnt as bad as some of u think, and plus having mascherano along side him will give him loads of opportunities to attack and i think he will thrive from it!!

rafa has had gambles before and some pay off
Chelsea are s h i t - August 5th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
This site does make me laugh. So many people, so many different stories almost all of it is pointless.
Rafa does what Rafa does. I dont see you lot earning millions as an EPL manager so personally……… In Rafa I trust!.
He is as hungry for the EPL and to do one over the manures as all us lot are. So any doubters should be willing to accept humble pie should we win the EPL. Which is a very strong possibility, with Tevez and Ronaldo gone, Mr Ferguson does not have the talent he did have, so to write us off could also mean a huge serving of humble pie for him too.
Forget Villa, forget Aguero, but Silva is a definate possibility.
hoogle - August 5th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Well said Danny. i agree. I honestly can’t see rafa making a mistake in this, probably his most important transfer window so far. rafa knows better than any one who posts on here or any other forum whether you want to admit it or not. Arsenal tried to sign Aquilani last season I believe but Roma wouldn’t sell. so if Arsene rates him he must be above average. The truth is, it is impossible to replace Alonso with any player that is available so we will have to accept a slightly lesser player. I just hope we get Silva.
Jake - August 5th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
Could be a good signing. Alonso wasn’t a superstar when rafa bought him! And he grew into one of the best in the world! So this guy may be the same! You never know!
Oh and btw snieder isnt a replacement for alonso, hes way more attacking! He plays up near the strikers! But i would still welcome him, but not as alonso replacement.
Would love to see a top class striker! Not sure voronin is up to the task!
Would love Villa/Aguero, not sure we have the transfer power though!
We dont need Silva, Reira is good enough, no point wasting a load of money on a player who is slightly better!

all u wankers down talking ur new signing .its simple RAFA KNOWS MORE ABOUT FOOTBALL THAN U. rafa had a variety from most midfielders in the world 2 pick from and he chose this guy so he is obviously very good.
saulty - August 5th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
i don’t matter any way we got Masharno and he is better then alonso and still got potential they play same position do the same job xabi is better the mash at some thing’s but the rest mash is better this guy is back up if he’s better then avrage he is fine

bert jarrett - August 5th, 2009 at 9:02 pm
i think this lad will prove thew doubters wrong been researching him since he has been linked with us looks top notch can spray the ball about looks very cultured and set peices are good i mean to captain italy at every level except seniors he must be quality alonso was great but this guy looks like a great capture you pay for quality thats why he is 20m we will be more attacking this season go for teams i think maybe dossena will stay now i think towards the end of last season he was starting to addapt so if he does were have to rampaging fullbacks if not him insua reira is a gool lm dirk on the right hope we get another decent foward a center half and were be laughing looking very positive for the reds this year
red - August 5th, 2009 at 9:09 pm
nice post bert…
alonso’s weakness has been his pace and inability to get forward – hence we rely on gerrard and torres too much. let’s hope the new boy can come in and drive forward and bang in goals like fat lampard

Hahhahahahaha……enjoying having injurani……rafa knows s h i t and wins nothing…..so keep trusting in him….and nice one by some git earlier suggesting beckham would come play for u tossers……YAWN!
sorin - August 6th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Aquilani is a good player with good passing and long shots but I’m not sure he fit’s into Liverpool team. The Italian players are not good in Premier League as well as England players are not good in Serie A. It’s too much difference between style, culture…
Pool5 - August 6th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
bert jarrett – ok you say you have done your researc so tell when did aquillani last play more than 21 league games!!! Of for that matter play more than 5 consectative games?
He is signed now but its a deal that has weakened our chances, losing alonso for aquillani is definitely a step backwards!
Ash T - August 6th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
pool5 obviously its a step backward we lost one of our best players but the only way would be a step forward if we got a player who was young, good at passing and plays in the prem, some one like fabregas who we will never get.
so realy any player we sign who is not in the prem is going to be a step backwards as they need time to adapt and gel with the team
SHHHHHHH - August 6th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
pool5 if you think back gerrard was always injured torres was fucked most of last year so give him a chance. your getting on berts case i bet you have never seen him play more than twice so stop being negative coz when he proves you wrong yo will just be like all the other bitches on here in 3 months saying ohhhhh that aquilanis amazing
pappa smurf - August 6th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
SHHHHHHH
U talk about clueless bastards and say that we should get behind aquilani. well i think saying that spearing isnt good enough is someone who is a clueless bastard. firstly the kop sang his name v real madrid which shows that thosands of people have a different opinion of him to you. and one of your points is to get behind players so sayin that he is not good enuf after a few pre season games is just ridiculous.
think what you say before you say it u clueless bastard!!!!!
villian - August 6th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
SHHHH I can assure you I have seen aquillani play at least 20 times in the last 3 years and he is good but not great. He is majorly injury prone and has not play more than 21 league games in 4 years??? So tell me my friend how can u say he is so good???
Ash T u will find that gerard and torres played in or around 30 games each last season which is a very good return, so too use the point of them been missing for most of the season is wrong… Remember that they were both rested when we hammered united 3-1
