Liverpool to Make £20m Midfield Duo Bid: Does this Mean Lucas Can Leave?
by YNWA on August 5th, 2009 283 words | 48 commentsLiverpool new signings become like buses, wait around for ages for one, then three turn up at once, perhaps!

Udinese midfielder Gokhan Inler is the latest player to interest Liverpool as a replacement for Xabi Alonso.
The 25-year-old Turkish-born Switzerland international, Inler, is now understood to be high on Benitez’s radar. The former FC Basel and FC Zurich star has progressed well in Italy’s Serie A at Udinese since joining them in summer 2007 and he has 23 caps for his country. A source close to the club confirmed that Benitez ‘likes the player a lot’. (Clubcall)
Sky Sports News understands Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Juventus midfielder Christian Poulsen.
Juve are open to the sale of the Denmark international and a number of sides have been linked with an interest in his services.
But it is believed that Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool are in pole position to secure Poulsen’s signature. (Sky Sports)
So there you have it, Rafa’s going to go midfield crazy, except he probably isn’t and this is more than likely paper talk gone mad. However if any potential signing means putting Lucas further down the pecking order then it’s fine and dandy with me.
I think Inler isn’t a bad shout as he could be a player who acts as back-up as he is a little more adaptable than the one dimensional Danish international. Am I the only one who thought that perhaps Yossi could get more of a run out, I think he deserves a decent shot at a run in the first team and with Xabi out of the picture Benitez could have shuffled his pack to fit the Israeli in, what do others think.

Yossi Benayoun should get more of a run out and the team can be reshuffled good thinking David.
hoogle - August 5th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
I think that Yossi is definately in Rafa’s plans. He has just signed a contract extention and he wouldn’t have if he wasn’t going to get his chance. I rate yossi. He is a tricky little player like Luis Garcia but with more consistancy. Poulsen isn’t all that in my opinion but Inler could definately warm the bench up nicely.

Why dont we all give Lucas a break, we jumped the gun on alou Diarra and he became a french international and was in a Bordeux side that most recently won the french league ahead of th elikes of Lyon and Marseille. We jumped the gun on Momo Sissoko who is now a key member in the juvenus line-up that will undoubtedly return to fighting for honours this season and to many red supporters were so keen to frow away Biscan when his performances in the champo league 2005 led to that historic night at istanbul.
Now im not saying he’s 1X team material just yet but he has been consistent in pre-season for us so far and will come on leaps and bounds this summer. He replicates good cover and we all know how important depth is in the EPL. Though, i would like rafa to snap up Poulsen either on loan or for a small fee of £5-6m from Juve as back-up for our midfield. With Aquilani and Masch our main guns with Lucas and Poulsen supplying options and indeed cover especially if Alberto is as injury prone as we are told.
I would not want Gokhan Inler for the simple reason that he would be expensive and will expect to be in the first team, and so with our earlier addition of Alberto earlier today we dont need another ‘big-name’ cm do we? With these two we should now concentrate on signing a back-up defender preferably a versatile one (Richards) and a back-up striker (Negredo, Huntelaar, Kleber etc).
Although i agree with ‘LFC Man’ in that Martinez would be the ideal signing but for whatever resons i cannot see that happening

Ash T - August 5th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
inler would be good what i have saw of him, if poulsen is 6mill then inler would be 14mill and that wouldnt be a fair price, but can he adapt, personaly i dont think so

I’d like Silva and Villa or Huntelaar to come in.
I think we’re wasting £20 million on Aquilani
DM - August 5th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Fernando Torres is going to Man.United for £40million + Berbatov
Anonymous - August 5th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
players are used to bump up the price so that deal would be worth about 49p
Ash T - August 5th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
no torres is not going to man u
i hope we get villa/aguero or silva means if aquilani gets injured we can put two strikers up from or put silva just behind the striker with gerrard in centre mind

I have been impressed with lucas during pre season and feel the only way he is going to improve is if we support him and give him more confidence, we all support the same team and that includes all the players. Lucas is improving and he is still young a good squad member this season so for fucks sake lay off am fed up of hearing him getting panned.
LFCforever - August 5th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
I agree Fact think its time we started supporting Lucas and if i’m not mistaken this will be the first season he as had a full pre season and start as he came in January trasnfer window and then last year went to the olympics last year.
I think he as a lot more in the tank all he needs is a bit more confidence.
through the storm - August 5th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
I agree w/you on Yossi. He scores goals and he has more defensive qualities than Lucas. Deserves more of a chance. Lucas only good at back-up for Gerrard, but Yossi does that better too.
john4560 - August 5th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
if we get rid you will not have to hear about it (lucas)
yes please to silva
hope aquilani is not another sick note
Mr.Stranger - August 5th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Personally, I think Lucas is not a quality midfielder compare to others.
He doesn’t show he is strong enough to tackle, he’s definitely not as defensive as Yossi. Lucas’s ending is no where near good, he doesn’t get a lot of shots anyway. Perhaps should give him a chance. However, next reason Liverpool should start being serious. Gotta win the league since we haven’t won a single title more than a decade. I believe Rafa does not have time to let Lucas show his ability. I reckon he should leave, as he’s also interested in playing in Brazil. With the money if Rafa sold him, this could add up to get Villa (even though it’s less likely to happen, it’s something for me to dream of haha).
No offense to Lucas, good luck though!
Donavan Ried - August 5th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
W will see who comes in and who goes
matty - August 5th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
Guys I think most of you are also fogetting that Lucas by trade is a centre ATTACKING mid not a holding midfielder. In the Champions League semi final second leg against Chelsea he played in Gerrards role and if i remember corecty had a good game also getting on the scoresheet. He wasn’t Brazil’s under 20 captain for nothing aswel.
trent - August 6th, 2009 at 12:07 am
get lennon and steven defour or inler
igor - August 6th, 2009 at 12:38 am
Lucas will shine this season
TRAVIS - August 6th, 2009 at 2:33 am
NO WE ARE NOT BEING TOO HARD on the pathetic imp LUCAS. Anyone who says he has the bottle or the skill to hack it in the p.l is of a lower class of interlect. LUCAS is not only lazy, incompetant, and an ugly little imp, he also lacks the skill to provide a way to score goals. SELL him, even offer cash to someone, say like MANURE to buy him.
TRAVIS - August 6th, 2009 at 2:37 am
I think we may of missed the boat in getting a ‘real’ good deal with alonso. Huntelaar and roben for xabi would of been better than aquilani and 10 mil. STILL I hope i’m wrong and aquilani has a huge impact.
pete - August 6th, 2009 at 2:53 am
more rubbish printed
aquilani is in

no need to gamble!! its soo easy- Villa or Sivla IN ! Lucas and dossena OUT !

why poulsen????
nat - August 6th, 2009 at 4:36 am
why poulsen??????
Fact - August 6th, 2009 at 5:15 am
I think a player swap situation would have been insulting as real are desperate to off load these players. So not only do they poach xabi but also in the process try to get rid of players they deem not good enough for real madrid so well done rafa fuck madrid.

YNWA - August 6th, 2009 at 8:53 am
Why don’t we start paying of our debt?
appledave - August 6th, 2009 at 8:59 am
i’m sorry but this is bullshit. we’re getting aquilani and possibly cattermole as well. we won’t be selling lucas as we need more centre midfielders. can everyone please give him a break because he is the best young prospect at liverpool.
9torres - August 6th, 2009 at 9:13 am
Lucas is improving. City fans were slating Ireland non-stop and suddenly last season he clicked in to gear. Lucas unfortunately plays his best football as an attacking midfielder, which he rarely gets to do. Hope to see more of him this season and i think he will do well. He did say the boo’s against Fulham really got to him but that he feels they made him stronger. Like someone said, a full-pre-season and you never know.
don’t forget we have being doing double training most days with intense training before the friendly matches, hence some slightly lethargic performances.

MarkindublinIRE - August 6th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
Lucas is a decnt player …but he has been played out of position and expected to play like Gerard or Alonso…this aint goin to happen so soon…and therefore..he was at fault for a lot of our slip ups last year ..losing the ball…missed placed passes…missed chances in front of goal..and that peno he gave to wigan ..lost us to valuable pionts..and the sitter he missed away to stoke …anyways Rafa should play him in his best position ..see how he does..and if no improvement by jan ..then flog him and bring in someone else…and instead of slating LUCAS …RAFA should take the blame for playing him out of postion or even playing him fullstop…Rafa has a bad habit of playing players out of position and when they fail..the player gets abused..Rafa always has the same cheap excuse ..”they are professionals…on good money ..they should be able to play anywhere anytime..etc etc…and tries to blame the player….Ryan Babel is a top quality attacker…and would be a very good striker if he was given the chance to partner Torres a bit more…Babel has great pace and has spme very good skills about him..look at the goal he scored against Marseille in the champions league..the goal gainst Arsenal in the champions league..and the winner against Man ure at Anfield last year ..he is very good running in on goal..and if was given enough of a chance and gained some confidence he could be an exellent striker..we dont need to sign anymore strikers..not for big money…someone older and expierenced on the cheap would do..someone like Henry …or Gudjonhson ..or maybe van nistlerooy or Raul etc etc… torres ,kyut ,babel,voronin,ngog..and even benayoun..Gerard..Riera could play as a second striker…bring in some more defenders…and a top class attackin mid..or right winger …if he needs a striker desperately well wait till jan..its defenders we need more than anything else..this is our weekest area..a solid Lb and a solid central defender ..someone expierenced and versatile…distan ..or heinze plus maybe some more cover for the right back..incase johnson gets injured …who goin to play there..degen ?he is very dodgey lookin cant see him been much use …aurelio would do for a game or so..but not for 2 or 3 months.. and carra is best left in the centre…history prooves it lol…and agger and srtel are a bit injury prone….so defence is deffo our weekest area…especially when we have one or two key defenders out…johnson ..distan and another right full would strenghten the team..
Steve McMahon - August 6th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Therefore can anyone care to give a good explaination as to why Lucas is played out of position????????? (To a degree I can understand how this might affect him, but in my mind it in no way explains, poor passing, stupid fouling, and overall poor performances, no matter what his favourite position is he should be able to do the basics anywhere on the pitch)
Anyone care to try and second guess our leader with the following as well,
Babel a right footer but played on the left wing,
Kuyt a striker but played on the right wing,
And dont even think about trying to explain it with the Henry, Wenger and Arsenal story as the phrase chalk and cheese springs to ming when it comes to trying to make a comparision with Henry versus Babel and Kuyt.

Y is everybody..so crazeeee!! bout finding a replacement 4 Alonso.I dont get it??? Do we have to play a ctain way to win it????.dnt get me rong .. l ike Alonso and his a world class playa..but do we have to find som1 simlar 2 him..2 win the barclays premier league..Let’s be more positv and creative and xperment with a new style of play..even if it cost us drawz…Liverpool needs to find its own self again..and b Nr 1 in England again…What do think???
anonymous - January 5th, 2010 at 2:24 am
liverpool are turning out to be a joke carragher is to slow and old johnson can only attack gerrard off form torres off form lucas noy good enough and rafa not giving aquilini riera benoyoun or babel a real chance he dosent no how to manage a team
