A bargain that we should not pass up!

Liverpool, Man City go for Portsmouth defender Distin

Portsmouth defender Sylvain Distin remains in the sights of Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.

The Times says with Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel, who have back and hamstring injuries respectively, struggling to be fit for the opening game of the new Barclays Premier League season away to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday week, Benítez has only one fit, recognised centre half available — Jamie Carragher — after the exit of Sami Hyypia to Bayer Leverkusen and the manager wants cover in the position.

Benítez is likely to face competition from Manchester City for the defender. Having lost out to City for Gareth Barry, the midfield player, Liverpool will not want to end up second best again. (Times Online)

Now I know some don’t think a move for Distin would be a wise one, but I beg to differ. Given Daniel Agger’s ability to get injured on a fairly regular basis and the fact that Jamie Carragher is getting on a bit, we need decent cover, something we of course got out of Sami. As far as price wise is concerned I think this would be one hell of a bargain.

He may be over 30 but he has consistently proved his fitness whilst playing in the Premier League and he is a leader and in many ways we haven’t got that many of those at the club. Portsmouth are skint also, odd that given they have been taken over, but they have a huge debt to cover and will take anything they can for the Frenchman. Rafa, I say, go and get him, short term deal though of course.
