Why am I not surprised!

SOCCER 2009 - Espanyol Beat Barcelona 2-1

Sneaky f**ker!

Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola has told his bosses that he still wants Javier Mascherano at the heart of his midfield by the start of the season.

The European champions had all but conceded that a deal for the Liverpool midfielder was impossible following Xabi Alonso’s defection from Anfield to Real Madrid for £30million.

But Guardiola met with technical secretary Txiki Begeristain and director of football Raul Sanllehi to say the Argentina captain is still his No 1 target for the problem holding midfield position.

Mascherano is keen on a move to Spain with his agent Walter Tamer last month revealing the former West Ham United man had become ‘tired of life in England’.

Yep, it annoys me also. To be honest I am trying very hard to decide which of Spain’s big two is more irritating, and have to say that Barca are beginning to ease in front of Real Madrid for me. At least Florentino Perez’s approach was straightforward, sneaky and underhand, but easy to judge. Pepe Guardiola and Txiki Begeristain are an entirely different kettle of fish. The Catalan giants has claimed that they were not going to pursue their all to obvious move for Javier Mascherano, but clearly this was just wishful thinking.

The Danger is of course that the Argentine uses the sale of Xabi Alonso as some kind of valid excuse to put in a transfer request and to be honest It wouldn’t surprise me if this did in fact happen. For some reason I have a funny feeling that the battling midfielder may well decide to push that little further for a move to the Nou Camp, and one can only hope that Rafa sticks to his guns on this one.
