Football - Portsmouth v Newcastle United Barclays Premier League

“Hey Jermain, whats the best route to the Spurs training ground?”

Sebastien Bassong is on the verge of joining Tottenham after Newcastle accepted an £8million deal.

The France star, who passed a medical on Thursday morning, will answer Harry Redknapp’s desperate search for a defender after losing Jonathan Woodgate, Ledley King and Michael Dawson to injury.

Bassong has been eager to leave Newcastle after their shock relegation to the Championship and Manchester City and Arsenal were also in the hunt.

But Spurs are set to beat them to his signature as they look to wrap up their latest summer signing.

Spurs fans had been initially worried about the lack of action in the transfer market this summer but now it appears that Harry Redknapp has secured his fourth new signing in the form of impressive young French defender Sebastien Bassong.

The £8m deal in today’s market is an absolute bargain and Harry has no choice but pick up a centre back given the injury nightmare that has hit the club’s first choice trio of defenders, Jonathan Woodgate, Ledley King and Michael Dawson.

The 23 year old was one of the only bright sparks of Newcastle’s disastrous Premier League campaign last term and will be looking to challenge for a first team spot even when the injured trio make their recoveries.
