Wenger starts to make his mind up on trio of potential signings.

Brede Hangeland Fulham 2008/09

Arsenal will not be pursuing their interest in the Internazionale midfielder Patrick Vieira, but Arsène Wenger is considering a move for the Fulham defender Brede Hangeland he revealed yesterday. Marouane Chamakh, however, is not an option unless Bordeaux lower their price.

With Kolo Touré sold to Manchester City and Philippe Senderos seemingly on his way to Everton, a central defender would seem to be a priority. Wenger, while pointing out that they still have five centre-backs on their books, confirmed that Hangeland is a potential target. “We have had a look at him, yes,” he said. “We have not contacted Fulham, not contacted Hangeland, not made our choice on him or anybody else.” Fulham have presented the Norway captain with a new contract offer, but he has not yet responded to that, and their manager Roy Hodgson has seemingly accepted that it would be hard to stand in his way should Arsenal bid. If this is indeed accurate it’s a little sad but I guess predictable. I think we would have all liked to see Paddy back at the club whether it be for emotional or tactical reasons, maybe Arsene is playing it cool and will make a last gasp attempt to nab him from Inter Milan?

As for Hangeland, he’s not a bad player. Very solid, does all the easy things well and is a no nonsense customer, maybe that’s what we need right now, or perhaps he is a bit to one dimensional for Arsenal, where we like our defenders to be able to pass a ball as well as being able to hoof it 80 yards out of danger.

The whole Chamakh thing is getting tiresome and It wouldn’t surprise me if Wenger just said sod it and gave up on him, which may be the best way to proceed as we do have a decent number of striking options at the club anyway.
