Will not be missed!
Lucas Leiva has confessed that he could leave Liverpool if he is not granted more starting opportunities this season, with Corinthians the most likely destination.
Xabi Alonso’s departure for Real Madrid seemed to open up a slot for the Brazilian midfielder, who has always had Rafael Benitez’s backing despite his performances receiving mixed reviews.
However, with Alberto Aquilani set to join the Merseyside giants from Roma, Lucas’ hopes of nailing down a spot in the first XI have quickly faded.
And the former Gremio star has made no attempt to stamp out reports of a possible move back to his homeland.
“You have to see what Benitez plans but the president of Corinthians already knows I am interested and what I want,” the 22-year-old said, according to The Sun.
Lucas arrived at Anfield in 2007 as one of South America’s hottest prospects, having become the youngest ever player to win the prestigious Bola de Ouro (Brazilian Golden Ball) award. (Goal.com)
I think I have expressed my feelings about Lucas in the past but In case you missed it before I am not a fan. I am not saying he is the worst player in the world, hell he may not even be the worst player at Anfield (although he would come close) I am just saying he isn’t good enough to play for Liverpool, simple as that.
He’s had his chance, many in fact, and time after time he wanders around the pitch getting involved now and again, misplacing passes, mistiming tackles and generally doing a very good impression of a distinctly average footballer. If he was under the impression that Xabi’s departure suddenly leaves a door open for a run in the first team, then I hope to high heaven Rafa lets him no otherwise.
Remember we are not talking about a teenager who should be given time to prove himself we are talking about a 22 year old who has taken part in, amazingly, 70 Reds matches. We really could do with offloading him and perhaps even getting some cash for him would be a bonus, but by no means essential!
