A good way to invest the rest of the Alonso cash?

Sports - September 25, 2007

Liverpool and Aston Villa have been told to shelve any plans they have to sign Real Madrid playmaker Wesley Sneijder.

The Holland international was expected to be surplus to requirements at the Bernebeu following the arrivals of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The signing of Xabi Alonso from Liverpool has led to speculation Sneijder could head to Anfield in part-exchange, while Villa have also been linked with a £16million move.

However, Real’s sporting director Jorge Valdano has told Spanish radio coach Manuel Pellegrini is keen to keep the player.

‘Our coach has a lot of confidence in his talents, therefore we are absolutely not under obligation to sell him,’ said Valdano.

‘Until it is proven otherwise, he is still a Real player.’ (The Metro)

OK, so let’s get this straight. Real Madrid are saying “Hands off” well that sounds familiar, it’s not like the La Liga side paid attention to Rafa when he said that Xabi was not for sale so surely Liverpool should do likewise and go in for the kill for the Dutchman?

Many believed that Sneijder’s move to Inter Milan was done and dusted but it didn’t go through and appears to be off the table and Benitez would do well to consider making a move for the playmaker. Aston Villa are also strongly linked to the 25 year old but surely he would be far more tempted with a move to us, as we have Champions League football to offer.

Last season after the Reds put Real to the sword Wesley was full of praise about the way we performed both at the Bernabeu and at Anfield and he was very gracious in defeat and would surely be tempted if an offer was made to bring him to Merseyside.
