Arsene Wenger is a miserly spender at the best of times (and we love him for it) so the idea that he will fork out such a fee for the Fulham centre back on the basis of him having one decent season seems ludicrous.

Yes he seems fairly solid and he is ably to lump the ball out of danger when needed but can he pass the ball? Can he be a danger in the opposition box from set plays (his one and only goal in 18 months was of course against us), the answer to both of these questions is no.

If Roy Hodgson’s idea was to scare off the Gunners so as to make sure they do not take away what they may feel is their prized asset, then hat’s off to them, I think it may well have worked.
