Arsenal to Complete £15m Hangeland Signing Within 48 Hours?!
by Alan Smith's Forehead on August 12th, 2009 13 commentsThis makes little sense to me and I pray that it doesn’t come to fruition.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has set a ‘48 hour’ deadline for Fulham to clarify whether or not defender Brede Hangeland is Emirates-bound, according to reports in Norway.
Norwegian daily VG state that Wenger wants the situation to be resolved as soon as possible with the new Premier League season returning this weekend.
The Daily Express suggest that Hangeland is not going anywhere for less than £15million – a similar figure to that of Kolo Toure’s which Arsenal received almost a fortnight ago. (Gooner Talk)
The buzz in the papers and on the internet appears to point towards the very real prospect of Arsene Wenger considering this purchase and I have to say I am not convinced it would be his finest hour if he were to stump up the hugely inflated fee for the Fulham giant.
Yes we probably need a centre back, perhaps even two, but is Brede Hangelaand the man for the job or perhaps more the more pertinent question is, should we fork out £15m for him? The answer to the first point may be perhaps but surely to the second point the answer must be “How Much!”
Roy Hodgson had previously made it clear he wasn’t open to selling the Norwegian but now it appears resigned to losing the player who may well have had his head turned by the constant speculation.

we just made 40million off the sales of Ade and Toure. 15 mil is lightwork for a team who have the funds to do it. He’s a good buy. To buy a proven premiership defender these days is normally gonna cost a lot more than that. Lescott is being Valued over the 20Mil mark so 15 mil really isnt too bad of an offer. Although I reckon 12mil + Loan them a player should seal it.

Correction, we made 20.5m after tax. However wenger did get get given a 40m kitty at the beginning of the season, for everything including wages; but wenger seems to have spent all of it on wages, in giving the likes of bendtner a long term contract. Is that wise? It means atleast we will make money from these players if we sell em.

i dont care if it costs 20m…if arsenal dont buy a decent defender and a forward they got no hopes for the season….nd expct more departures next summer

Dude bendtner is the solution for forwards, as long as he can stay as far away from our defense as possible; so he doesnt set up any own goals or score em, he should do the trick for us.

wengers fooking crazy if he doesn’t sign him up before man city offer 50 million for him he’s a good player who needs to play at a higher level. will eduardo or bendtner get his game against everton?

If we buy him, it will defeat the whole point of selling tuore. We are trying to get rid of foriegn players not buy em, in preparation for the 4+7 rule; which comes into effect next year and spells the end of arsenal in the top 4.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6%2B5_rule. Basically, if we have to field 4 british players every match, or forfeit the match. If we buy anyone it should be an english defender. How about micah richards, or mathew upson?
Who can we play for that atm? Walcott, ramsay, gibbs, wilshere? But doing that means we cant play nasri, rosicky, or clichy. Then if we play simpson and randall that means we cant play one of our strikers or wingers; along with not being able to play one of our back four if we play randall… Then theres the option of gavin hoyte, in defense and luke freeman as another striker; but even that causes probs.
Basically this 4+7 rule is gonna cause arsenal serious probs, and we better only sign english players in the next few seasons, or we are screwed!
What do you guys reckon, what are your solutions for the 4+7 rule, followed by the 5+6 rule, followed by the 6+5 rule?

i think it will ruin the modern game and push it back decades.most leagues will be like the italian league, absolutley boring all because blatter can’t handle the fact the prem is the best league in the world and if english fans think it will help them win the world cup it won’t how many times did they win it when there was mostly english players playing in england?the foregin players and coaches have helped the english national team. english players technique seems to becoming on par with the spanish, brizailians etc.i hope somebody sees sense and tells blatter to piss off.

I definitely think it will completely change and possibly destroy the modern game, as long as they still allow foriegn coaches and managers, things wont be too bad, because as you said they are helping english players catch up with foriegn players tech wise. I mean these coaches have created joe cole, who despite not being anything like zinedine zidane, hes still quite a talented techy player. This rule will kill off arsenal, we might even being facing a relegation battle, with this rule in place. Arsenals allstar 11 this year does not include 1 english player.
Your also right, we only won one world cup’ when our players were playing for foriegn countries, not when we had loads of english palyers playing for english teams.
Rafa has already spent 18m on glen johnson in preparation for this rule; so if he thinks it will get passed, then there must be a reason for him thinking it will…

Vorian:
Chill bro…
wen t rule comes we hav a simple solution…
we shall boycott watching football altogether….
just like we hav lost interest in F1…
we’d rather watch a game of darts or something as boring as golf…
if ther r jokers in t world who wanna create a circus outta football… fine.. such rules shall ensure that t south american teams shall win every possible world cup available… european teams shall fight like dogs for t euro cup…. t premiership, la liga n t serie-a shall be reduced to t level of league 2…. n god save t smaller leagues…
The beautiful game of footballs being ruined by Morons like platini n blatter… seriously both of them need to grow up n get a life…
