Liverpool In Pole Position to Snap Up £11m Hangeland: Does Rafa Need Him?
by YNWA on August 16th, 2009 224 words | 48 commentsYes, we’ve been linked with yet another centre back!

BREDE HANGELAND has been offered £50,000 a week to keep him out of the clutches of the Premier League big boys.
Liverpool, Everton, Manchester City and Aston Villa – who are all desperate to sign central defenders – have expressed interest in the Fulham star.
Hangeland can double his pay at Craven Cottage but is biding his time to see if a big-money bid is made for him. Arsenal reassured Fulham chief Roy Hodgson last week that they are not interested in signing the tough-guy central defender.
Hangeland was one of the most improved players in the Premier League last season. (News of the World)
If as this report suggests, Arsenal have pulled out of the race to sign the giant Norwegian and with Man City almost certain to finally land Joleon Lescott in the coming weeks that would make Rafa the firm favourite to win the race for Hangeland if he is indeed interested.
The Fulham centre back is pretty solid, if not spectacular, and the Cottagers are thought to be asking for a fee in excess of £10m, it may be an expensive signing to make and if we do indeed have that sort of cash it would be more wisely invested in bringing in another attacking option in my view.

1st.
yes more than ever now but we also need a striker
RaNE - August 16th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
he is one great defender and i think he could replace carra and one great starter in the liverpool xi
red_army - August 16th, 2009 at 6:56 pm
forget about centre backs. we need class attacking options. liverpool were poor today. Voronin- what a joke!
no offence to rafa but he has to stop playing babel on the left. should have started with benayoun.
Anonymous - August 16th, 2009 at 7:09 pm
buy him and silva and villa on structered deals and defour and inler/valbuena and a quality lb
Donavan Ried - August 16th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
Anyone who saw the game would realise that it was no in denfence where we lost this game but rather in midfield and Attack, No real supply to Torres from Babel or Lucas …… the Kuyt, Voronin sub???? ……What was that about??? sould have been Lucas for Voronin, Gerrard back to midfield and Voronin upfront along side Torres .,…
Donavan Ried - August 16th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
sorry typo should read “it was not in denfence” and “should have been Lucas for Voronin”
rudeboy - August 16th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
youre right donavan but rafa loves lucas and ill bet he starts next game
Jethro - August 16th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
we should get a defender but firts we need more attacking options. Voronin should be sold immediately. Babel and lucas should be sold by january if they havent improved and we should get David silva and another attacker like nico krancjar (good player and he’ll be cheap). The season has begun we need a solid team to win this league. It has to happen this year.
Sam!lfc - August 16th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Judging by that game by the time aquiliani comes back (late september-early october) we could be out of the title race! like everyone else we need a backup/2nd striker who is relatively cheap an can score 10-15 goals a season. i said cheap because we need someone like silva on the wing and he is abit costly.
our defence is decent so there is no point in getting Hangeland.
Sam!lfc - August 16th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
i meant to say like everyone else “said”
Anonymous - August 16th, 2009 at 7:37 pm
indeed sso we should get van der vaart and silva and villa and defour/inler/valbuena damn
kop 4 ever - August 16th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
him and then but a cheapish but decent striker or maybe van der vaart for cheap
lvslfc - August 16th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
i would like this signing, maybe not for as much tho. 8mil tops. then sign van der vaart for 8mil and possibly negredo for round 10mil with add ons
johno - August 16th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
new to this site but thought the whole team looked slow and half a yard behind the ball babel looked nothing like the player for holland v england dont need a cb need someone that has pace and an eye for goal eg young or miller
Sam!lfc - August 16th, 2009 at 7:59 pm
How much is VDV some say he is £10 mill and others say £15 mill
if we do get him and a winger someone like silva then we will be a force.
appledave - August 16th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
he’s good but i think we should get wheater or shawcross instead
RaNE - August 16th, 2009 at 8:12 pm
how come everyones having ago at voronin he played in the german league a slower pace league give him a break and let him find his feet hes came back with confidence and soon to start scoring goals
has anyone looked at his goalscoring records?
at mainz in 3 seasons he scored – 30 goals ten a season ok
koln in one season he scored 6 in 21 apps – not the best but good enough for a cover
leve he scored 37 but as i say this is good for a cover striker
and when he went to hertha 11 goals in 26 apps
hes good for a cover we dont need to buy a new one it s just because he is unproven look at aquilaini your all saying hes going to be great what happens if he isnt
johno - August 16th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
very interesting to here glen hoddle say the had a stronger squad than us who could we bring on vorinon who was least to say usless thought benyeoun looked half decent
Paddy - August 16th, 2009 at 8:35 pm

Gunneroo - August 16th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Liverpool don’t have any money, he blew his budget on Johnson & Aquillani.
He will have to sell before he can buy, but defence was not your problem today it was the link up play between Torres & the midfield.
Babel will never come to fruition at a club like Liverpool.
Chris - August 16th, 2009 at 9:51 pm
Sack Rafa, total failure, put king Kenny in charge. That should sort things out.
BoroBoy - August 16th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Ofcourse Rafa needs him, after Skrtel and Carragher’s performances today i think so,both going for the same ball and cracking skulls they looked shakey and unorganised, Liverpool quite simply didn’t have their team head screwed on with a bench that not even Hull City would be proud of. Based on Alonso leaving and todays performance i would say Liverpool will be lucky if they finish 4th,Man Utd looked lack luster as well lucky to get all 3 points they will struggle without Ronaldo. Arsenal or Chelsea for the title you better believe it.
Warrenisaredfan - August 16th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
After today’s defeat i remain optomistic about our title chances but not confident. The likes of Lucas, Voronin and Babel did not show their worth today like we all hoped they would and Dononvan was right when saying that our defence was not our problem today. It was our creativity ie. our midfield. Though Gerrard did not seem to be at his best today at all, nor Kuyt or Masch.
Is it time to offload the un-performers like Voronin and Babel etc. There is no doubt that Ryan has outstanding potential, but that will not come to fruition with Liverpool fc as Rafa has little or no confidence in him and always plays him out of position. On a brighter note Glen Johnson had a good debut, and Benny’s performance showed glimmers of real quality.
What we need:
Another option in defence, another playmaker and another striker (possibly winger):
After today’s performance and long-term agreivance i suggest that Rafa must now offload Voronin and indead Babel. Lucas Leiva failed to flatter today and so although i have faith in his ability maybe he should be offloaded to bring in someone with more steal. So this is what i would do:
Around £25m left from transfer money, sell:
Charles Itandje £1m (OR FREE!!)
Philip Degen £1m (OR FREE!!)
Andrea Dossena £4m
Lucas Leiva £5m
Ryan Babel £8m
Andriy Voronin £3-4m
possibly around £20m?
Then invest it ALL!! in new players:
Javi Martinez £10m
Rafael Van der Vaart £15m
Carlton Cole £15m
around £40m? possibly another defender??
But i spose what is the point we may not even sign another player and may slump to a 3rd, 4th place again. And with Mancs (blue) and even spurs playin well then we may lose our champo places. Geese im depressed.
HOPE IN OUR HEARTS!

Were not playin football manager, its the real world!!! Wake up and realise tht wud NEVER happen!
We wud struglle to sign one top class player with the yanks in charge, and its a bit late to make that many changes anyway!

Its only one game so dont start worrying yet! Thers another 37 games to be played, please dont be depressed
BELIEVE!

Jonny – August 16th, 2009 at 10:23 pm ………”We wud struglle to sign one top class player with the yanks in charge, and its a bit late to make that many changes anyway!” …. Jonny i think that the changes most of us want to see is (1) In who starts (2) in how Rafa sets his stall out. By this i mean going out there to “win” the game and not to play “not to lose it” …..
Warrenisaredfan said that he was “optomistic about our title chances but not confident.” not depressed. I will wait and see
johno - August 16th, 2009 at 11:22 pm
agree with donovan ried rafa tends to put a team out that wont lose when we go behind then its all out for the last 15 minutes we should play like this from the start and learn from the mistakes of the last few seasons go straight at teams and rip them apart
johno - August 16th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
have made a few coments so far and was wondering what the rest of ye thought
RaNE - August 16th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
after a performance like that im not confident about the league or any trophey but i could be wrong i would only just like manu not to win anything and no new team to break into the top 4
johno - August 16th, 2009 at 11:49 pm
the only way we r going to win the premiership is if rafa plays a team that attacks not leaving a right back like jonston to try and do it all alone there was no supply at all today from midfield need one good signing to shake things up abit and get the team working like at the end of the season when we had to go for it
nana - August 17th, 2009 at 12:14 am
if we don’t get a 2nd striker we’ll be lucky to make it into the top 4.
Adam Johnson - August 17th, 2009 at 12:21 am
Right, it was one game, we should have had a penalty near the end. the ref was on there side as he gave some stupid freekicks which goals came from, but when a worse tackle was made on liverpool players nothing was given.
also everyone who keeps mentioning silva and villa, stop wasting your energy typing. we wont sign them, benitez doesnt have a clue what he is doing when it comes down to buying players. he buys a few good players then wastes the rest on yougsters who have very little experience.
the transfers list will be closing sooner or later. rafa has already spent alonso’s money on Glen johnson and Alberto aquallilni, although he alreay had around 20/30 Million to start, so rafa has around 25 million to spend. 2 good players for 12.5 million each? maybe VDV for 15m and a Supporting striker for 10million?
But, dont be getting depressed about todays game. it was one game, against tottenham, away. wait until they meet us at anfeild when we should have a squad together.
johno - August 17th, 2009 at 12:49 am
the only one that we could afford to buy would b van der vart who is going for peanuts and still rafa is linked with the likes of tungay shawcross and hangeland one season wonders with no class with them put together 8 to ten million would buy van der vart would u rather see him start or come of the bench than tungay
travnloz@gmail.com - August 17th, 2009 at 1:58 am
Wat a disgrace pool was yesterday. No creativity till yossi comes on, and for all those who say give lucas a chance… ITS BECAUSE OF WAT HE DIDNT SHOW YESTERDAY that he should be moved on. He provides NO link up play. Is o.k defensively, but that is wat we hav masch 4. Lucas is just not the answer. Hangeland would be o.k, but FFS sake, if VDV is only 6 mil, SIGN THE BUGGA
pete - August 17th, 2009 at 2:39 am
buy him we need him
ohblimey - August 17th, 2009 at 3:44 am
i swear 2 god man, rafa needs to sort his squad out. no strength in depth for e.g when 1 of your main centre backs get injured you bring on a 18 year old spanish defender who has never played a proper game before at the highest level, no disrespect to the lad but that is unacceptable. if alonso didnt leave then i only reckon rafa needed to make 1 or 2 signings. a striker in case torres got injured and a right back but based on the performance againest spurs they need several, they need
LB- insua is a very good prospect but i dont think that he is ready to play week in week out.aurelio is injured and dossena is a better striker than an left back. like to see someone like richards come in as i know he is mainly a centre back but can play anywhere across the defence so thats a bonus
DMC- GET RID OF LUCAS he is crap, the only thing he can do when hes got the ball is to pass it back to where it came from. if we get rid of him for around 6M-8M get either martinez or defour as both are young and have a bright future ahead of them. both would provide cover for mascherano and Aquilani and start to play more games in the next few seasons.
CB-definetly looking at this performance againest spurs, rafa definetly needs a fourth centre back as sami has gone.rather than spending 8M on shawcross and 12M on turner i would rather see rafa sign distin for 3M as he is a very consistent performer.
LW and RW- we definetly need a winger as babel is not going to cut it and riera is inconsistent, i would like to see rafa not spend 23M on silva but spend 15M on james milner as he is english, consistent and would provide good support for gerrard and torres. milner and kuyt on the right wing and riera and benayoun on the left(prefer benayoun)
AMC- this is the least important position to sign a player but could be a good addition to the squad because if gerrard gets injured or needs a rest, there will someone to take his place. would like to see van der vaart as he would only cost about 6m
Backup striker-this is a must because because if torres gets injured, voronin is shit backup, nobody like villa or aguero bacuse they would cost to much and it would disrupt the system that liverpool play. we need a striker that knows that his game time will be dependant on torres fitness and wouldnt cost to much.llorente or tuncay fit the bill.
so 30M from the board
36M from player sales so far
more outs
lucas-6M
Voronin 3M
itandje 1M
babel 9M
Plessis 1m
total from player sales 56M
total 86M
ins so far
johnson 18M(done)
Aquilani 20M(done)
86M-38M
48M left
more ins
richards- 7M
martinez/defour 10M
distin 3M
milner 15M
van der vaart 6M
tuncay 7M
total 48M
premiership won

just sell masherano n a.riera… liverpool can have many cash 2 buy another player… buy a new defender & midfielder tht can also play winger on left side…
vironin cnt replace torres.. we need a briliant player such like gerrard, torres, glen & benayoun.. tuncay n milner shuld be the key….
-lfc- - August 17th, 2009 at 6:25 am
sack rafa and get a manager that no’s that lucas babel and voronin just arnt good enough
LFC - August 17th, 2009 at 8:44 am
Attackers probably needed for the title chase: Dani Guiza(Fernebache) or Alvaro Negredo (Real Madrid)
Midfielders: Wesly Snedjer (Real Madrid), Van Det Vaart( Real Madrid), Juan Mata ( Valencia) or Aaron Lennon
Defenders: Turner ( Hull), Gerard Pique (Barcelona) or Lescott (Everton)
Goalkeepers: Adler (Bayer Lervekusen)
Players should sell: Voronin, Babel, ElZhar and Cavalieri

too good to be true..
if this can be true, i will become the most happy person in the world..
i doubt that we can have a lot of that money..
hopefully with this match, rafa can open his eyes..
reconsider his decision to use leiva and voronin..
to remain realistic, i think we only buy at most 3 player in this transfer window..
if voronin is dold, maybe rafa will add some one in striker, but if not, prepare to see that ponytail hair play all of this season..
if rafa has open his eyes, maybe he will think to buy another player in midfield to cover aquilani or gerrard..don’t know his target yet, but hope rafa will turn to vdv as he will only cost us 6mil..but who knows??rafa has strange taste in player..
the most likely is we will buy another defender..well, just hope rafa not buy another average or wastefull def..
-turner for 10-12 mil = very overrated (just one season not prove that he is special)
-shawcross for 9-10 mil = overrated (same with turner)
-diakathe for 7 mil = good choise (hope we can get him on bargain at around 5 mil)
-amoebaretta for 10 mil = good choise but cost us costly as we only need buy a forth def..not main def..
-steven taylor for 10 mil = good choise if we can get him for 7-8mil
-campbell for free = although he is old, but for forth def, why not..we can save money for another player…maybe we can offer him month per month contract like kanu in pompey..
hopefully we will play better in next game and do better in transfer market..

why dont we get fergie he knows alot about football and bring all the manu team to liverpool
fatgazlfc - August 17th, 2009 at 10:23 am
first time posting here so hello. if what people are saying is true about having about 25-30mil i would get van der vart who can play across the middle for 6-8mil, richards for 6-8mil who can play cb/rb then we can push johnson to rm move gerrard back to the center and use benny/kuyt in the gerrard role for now. leaving us with about 9mil. then id sell voronin-3mil, degen-1mil so giving us 13mil and use that to get quaresema he can play both wings and i dont think jose likes his attitude at inter so could probably get good deal and then get skrtl and agger to slap him about a bit so he loses the attitude, i think that would solve all our problems with them 3
fatgazlfc - August 17th, 2009 at 10:38 am
i forgot to mention milner but i doubt o’neil would let him go for anything less than 15+ he’d probably demand silly money from us, so even though he’s just what we need i think the only way we’d get him is to offer babel and 6-7mil but then thats another striking option lost
Garyn - August 17th, 2009 at 11:31 am
What a poor poor performance! There just seemed to be no creativeity in the side! Personaly i still think Rafa wont be given the funds to spend anymore in the transfer window, but this poor perfomance should spark the American owners to spend big! Personaly i hope they sign Silva and Shawcross, but i can only see them buying someone with no proven quality again! I have heard several times that the Americans are at an advanced stage in talks with the DIC (Dubai International Centre) and that a deal should be struck before the summer transfer window closes! All we can do is hope that this is true and we can sign someone massive like Villa Aguero before Septmeber!
This is unlikely but hopefully the luck will be with us!
Does anyone else have any information on a possible takeover for Liverpool?

LFC – August 17th, 2009 at 8:46 am ……”& GET RID OF THE AMERICAN OWNERS!!! GET DONALD TRUMP or SOMEONE” …….LFC, LOL DONALD TRUMP IS AMERICAN! LOL ……. But i know what you were trying to say
PHILIP - August 17th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
I begin to think my fellow LFC fans have lost the plot. When we won the champions league and were awful, they loved Rafa. Now he is doing well, they criticise everything. As for the owners – well they bought Torres and Mascherano, they support the clubs debts with personal guarantees, what more do you want ? We can’t spend money we haven’t got. We cant afford Villa or Aguerro, simple as that. Grow up lads and support the club.
