Ben Foster (knee) or Tomasz Kuszczak will deputise for Edwin van der Sar, while Nani (shoulder) could feature after playing for Portugal in midweek.
Birmingham are also short of defenders, with Martin Taylor and Liam Ridgewell long-term absentees.

Obviously on the face of it this is the ideal start to the season, home to a newly promoted side, but we shouldn’t get complacent and that goes for fans and team members equally. If Nani plays then I expect him to be raring to go and keen to show that he can prove his doubters wrong. We could have some problems in the keeping area with Foster potentially also out injured although on the whole I think Thomas Kuszczak is solid enough.
