Liverpool Set to Bid for Excellent £10m Spanish Centre Back
by YNWA on August 17th, 2009 285 words | 41 commentsBenitez looks strengthening his defensive options.

LIVERPOOL were in Bilbao last night to run the rule over their £10million-rated central defender Fernando Amorebieta.
Bilbao’s 6ft 3in stopper was facing Barcelona in the first leg of Spain’s version of the Community Shield. He has been attracting attention around Europe because so many teams want an imposing leader at the back.
While Amorebieta has yet to make his debut for Spain, he has been in the international squad and is tipped to break into the starting line-up this season. (The Sun)
After Martin Skrtel and Jamie C collided yesterday the fear must have been that we had crocked two centre backs in one incident but they should come out of the incident with only bruising. We did get to see Daniel Sanchez Ayala in Premier League action and he looked nervous, which is fair enough.
I have to admit to being a big fan of Amorebieta having watched him in action on the box a few times. He is solid and dependable and perhaps most importantly he’s a reliable figure who can generate confidence from those around him and at 24 is a good age to sign having already built up a good grounding of experience. Obviously we have three solid customers to pick from for the centre back berths but much like clubs dream of having four top notch strikers in their armoury they should also look to have a quartet of central defenders to cope with the demands of a long hard season.
I think this is one deal that Rafa may well push on with and could work out far better value for money than opting for the likes of Michael Turner.

ithis would be ok but i think becuse of the 6+5 rule i would prefer english.
Hoogle - August 17th, 2009 at 10:26 am
Don’t know enough about the player to comment on his ability. Maybe we do need another centre back but If it was me i would put the 10 million towards a bid for an attacking player such as Van de Vart, Lavezzi, Silva, Villa, Mata or any other quality attacker that we have been linked with. I am really concerned with our lack of options in attack this season. babel and Voronin are just not good enough in my opinion.

Sam!lfc - August 17th, 2009 at 10:28 am
he is pretty decent but is centre back our biggest problem?
like i said on other posts we need a cheap but decent 2nd striker and a decent winger. We can’t get Silva as he is to expensive but their is other options out their who may not be as good but is cheaper and can still do a decent cross!

i think he could be a great buy for liverpool hes young and hes also supposed to have a good future in the spanish national team which speaks for itself really. my main cause for concern is a lack of a striker as back or even to actually to play alongside torres. voronin has failed to produce the goods in too many games for liverpool and i feel its time to bring his time at liverppol to an end , hopefully in the current transfer market. theres talks of david villa but i just cant see it happening, tuncay anyone?
Sam!lfc - August 17th, 2009 at 10:43 am
i think tuncay would be a good buy i mean sure he isn’t prolific like torres but he is about 10 million and can scor about 10-15 goals a season plus he knows alot about the premier league or negredo as we got spanish people at lfc so he won’t take long to settle in.
Whoever Rafa buys i hope he will make an impact and help us win a cup.

I’m not happy with the way things seem to be going. Yes we have a few injuries at CB, But that is not where the problem really lies at with the team. Midfield and a second Quality striker are really what is need ……. A centre back is ok if we are looking to strengthen but not before week get the basics in place …… The Tottenham game proved to me a couple of things (1) someone like Van Der Vaart is needed in place of Lucas, and (2) how badly we need another quality striker
9torres - August 17th, 2009 at 10:48 am
We do need to make a good signing for the back, and that attacking player that we are missing was glaringly obvious against Spurs.
Anyone know where Riera was and why he wasn’t in the squad? There are rumours Barca are in for him and i just wondered if Rafa left him out because of that and we are maybe looking to bring someone in on the side… Silva anyone?
Just a thought.

Apparently we need one more CDF, and one more option in the front… just taking a look at other top teams’ squad, Man Utd, Man C, Chelsea, Arsenal… or seems like even Tottenham has more options and depth in the sqaud than us!?
I don’t know much about this guy but if he is that good as mentioned then worth to sign… or any CDF recently mentioned in the rumurs! … and how about Wheater? Seems like we can sign him for 6-7m and he is the kind of CDF (Tower) we lack of…
Ideally we can sign Silva in the front too… but if he is too expensive and we cannot afford, I would happy to see Tuncay joining… we can sign him for 7-8m?
So Wheater + Tuncay is just around 15m… hopefully this is the sum that we can afford, and I can imagine our squad improve significantly if we sign both~

liverpool are the best ever!!!!!!!!!!! - August 17th, 2009 at 11:00 am
yeah sign this guy and get negredo and vandervaart then get silva and push for villa/aguero or inler / defour coz our probs in that match wasn’t our defence it was the mid and attack torres looked tiered in that match so we need some one who can play like torres and score a lot of goals and the last thing we need is a lb insua looked all right but we need more dept the yanks should either sell the club or let rafa have all of the funds we need coz the sale of alonso was a major setback but lets look positive the transfer marcket isn’t over yet so rafa tuck in to the kitty and buy quality
in rafa we trust
Sam!lfc - August 17th, 2009 at 11:04 am
yeah where was Riera?
i don’t think he is on the injured list?
Riera is good on his day but i dunno about you guys but i think Riera is abit inconcistant. Judging by the performance we did need Riera whether he is inconcistant or not.
i Just hope Aquilani becomes fit early and adapt because he is an attacking midfielder and thats what we really need along with second striker
George Best - August 17th, 2009 at 11:17 am
yeh that was bit crappy from Liverpool against Spurs. Not the Liverpool of last season.
Gerrard/Torres combination was non existent.Dont think problem lies in defense though.Like Donovan Reid said quality striker and play maker like Van devaart is what is needed. Also like to add the passing ability of Alonso was sadly missed.Although Lucas has improved he is not a play maker as Alonso. We can say a whole lot of things even excuses like the Referee who in fact had a bad game and made some poor decisions or Babel flattering to deceive even mistakes made by defense. The fact of the matter is that they played very poorly for an exception of Johnson.Insua and Benayoun those were the only players that was really up for it.
Nuff said.

The game against Tottenham was really rough, half our players were on the floor most of the time.
After the collision between Skrtel and Carragher, they didn’t seem as steady as they were the first 30mins. Carragher in particular making some high profile misjudgements.
If your 2 centre halves are shaky, Liverpool will all underperformed since everyone will start thinking negatively, most of our plays start from a good solid backline. After Mascherano’s “collision” with one of the Tottenham players, he just didn’t seem the player he was. Lucas and Babel won’t be players who’ll get us back on level terms when we’re losing, they only perform when there’s less pressure and will only gain confidence under those circumstances.
I thought the Ref was wasn’t giving as much decision as he should have allowing Tottenham to pressure us more, they should of had a few more yellow cards. Redknapp must have told his players to be as rough as possible.
So yea, we need another player who’ll perform under pressure and help
us perform when losing.

i think we should do a triple raid of atlethic bilbao for this guy, martinez, and llorente(tall striker) and offer 18 mill + lucas+ voronin
Red77 - August 17th, 2009 at 11:37 am
BLAME RAFA!!! We had no CM and Masch was doing double duty covering for that totally inept Lucas. Stevie should have moved into CM earlier, dump Lucas and bring in benni. Yes, our CD was screwed but what the heck was Carra doing slamming into Skertel. He saw Skertel coming for the ball, he had his back to it, yet he jumped with Sketel. It was a really bad day at the office for Carra. And where was babel in covering for Insua? Poor guy was left marking shadows everytime Lennon had the ball. If not for Reina, Johnson and Benni, we looked like a team fresh from the Champions Div. Wake up Rafa. Dump that un-Brazillian brazillian and then shoot yourself. i am sick of these lame excuses. If Wenger can buy babies and make them men, why are our “Men” wanting to head for the exit door….ITS YOUR FAULT!!!!!!

red77 are you a 10 year old coz you sound like it
Can't Remember - August 17th, 2009 at 11:57 am
Did any of you Lucas haters actually watch the game yeserday? Apart from Reina, Johnson and Yossi when he came on i thought he played as well as anyone in a liverpool shirt. The same people like to come on here and complain about Dossena too but would he have been any worse than Insua was? I don’t think so!
SHHHHHHH - August 17th, 2009 at 11:59 am
i agree with donavon ried foe once we need a second striker with a bit of class. but as for you red 77 what do you want to do get rid of rafa and start again??? then in the next 2 years it dosnt work you will be calling for the new mans head… no excuses yesterday that was shocking but we need to stick with it get a few wins on the board and hope in 4 weeks aquilani is as good as everyone says he is
Paddy - August 17th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
Lucas done his job very well yesterday, if it wasn’t for him Lennon would have scored

We need a right winger who can take on players, and then move kuyt back to the strikers position and bob’s your uncle

a 2nd striker will be great for lfc. pls Rafa listen to us.
pappa smurf - August 17th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
im not afraid to say that carraghers performances last season and against spurs have not been good enough. his distribution is awful and commits to many fouls. agger or skrtel have lots of injuries so i think a new CB is crucial if we are to win the league. i dont know another striker who could play with torres except villa. personally i think that we wont buy a striker and maybe put aquilani in the gerrard role and put gerrard to fill the alonso gap.
pappa smurf - August 17th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
kuyt cannot play up front in the premiership he has got any pace and not much creativity
Anonymous - August 17th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
We can get Lavezzi in a swap for Dossena, Lavezzi can play on both wings and also as a forward !
yes we need another CB because Agger and Skrtel have frequent injuries and Carra isn’t enough convicing and i agree bout what pappa smurf said about him.
We have to get rid of the players that we won’t use like Itandje, Dossena, Degen (who wasn’t even on the team list ! ) and act quickly to get new signings, only 14 days left for the transfert window !!!
matty - August 17th, 2009 at 1:00 pm
Im glad the Spurs game happend when it did because it gives Rafa time to have a look at what quality is in the transfer market, and the beg the owners for a little more cash.
It is obvious we need a few players are squad is too thin a striker and midfielder is our priority and a centre back wouldnt go a miss.
I think when we started losing we should have just gone 4-4-2 with Gerrard and Masch in the middle, 2 wingers and Torres and Kuyt up top.
I was surprised when Rafa took off Kuyt when we were losing i can think of several times when Kuyt has been in the right place at the right time to grab a goal late on.
BOD - August 17th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
Guys, I think we need to stop these sell and buy lists as its complete bullshit! We’re not going to be doing much more business in the transfer market. Maybe, we’ll offload Voronin and buy a Centre half. There certainly won’t be any mega money signings at this stage. Learn to deal with the players we have and move on. Of course, this is only my opinion and I could be proved wrong. I do hope that this is the case as we badly need some quality attacking options.
joe - August 17th, 2009 at 1:21 pm
what really need is a player who can really take control of a game like alonso did hopefully we already have this in aquilani and a player who can create something out of nothing or play a defence splitting pass eg vdv, silva. people on this site who are saying we will buy 3,4 and 5 players or players like villa and aguero are in dreamland. realistically we are going to sign1 at most player who will go into the first team which is more than likely going to be a defender. hopefully it will be someone like van der vaart who we can afford and i think would be a good signing. its about time someone said it like it really is around here.
Liverpool Fan - August 17th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
Anyways, van der vaart now costs only 6mill.would be a wise choice to buy him, since liverpool’s attacking midfield role is pathetic,1 injured n the another inexperienced(aquillani n lucas leiva)

we need a midfilder and a striker…not a centre back
man - August 17th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
agree with you mate..
vince - August 17th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
itandje 2 mil, degen 2 mil, dossenna 5 mil, and 12 mil from alonso transfer…
someone said van der vaart for 6 mil, and 15 mil for a forward eg mata, carew or van nistleroy….because our bench looked shite compared to tottenhams one, they had crouch and pavyluchenko waithing in the wings, 4 decent strikers all up….we only had one player with quality on the bench benayoun….maybe get this guy on loan with option to buy next year
SHHHHHHH - August 17th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
DONAVON RIED …we badly need a second striker your dead right the only problem is getting 1 whos willing to sit on the bench and wait his turn…. as we all know rafa loves stevie behind torres as do i most of the time… but yesterday we were crying out for someone to go up there with nando i think big carew is a great shout hes been there done it and you would think he would rather sit on are bench than villas……. i think if we sign someone like him and a fit aquilani we will be ok
Warrenisaredfan - August 17th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
I think ‘beardyboy’ (apologeese if i made a mistake on your name) is spot on their! We should attempt to make a triple deal for Amoriebieta, Martinez and Llorente! Although, Rafa is very unlikely to do it and Bilboa are even more unlikely to agree to it. However, i beleive we could generate the cash to make this happen defintely even use the likes of Lucas, Voronin, Babel and Itandje in exchange? What about them plus £10m?! We get the players we want and need whilst shedding the useless unperformers who are getting payed to watch the ball?!
Fantastic shout ‘Beardyboy’!
PS. Do not forget that Amoribieta is also an accomplished left back seems perfect to me!
Warrenisaredfan - August 17th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
Fantastic shout ‘Beardyboy’! Sign the bilboa trio Amoriebieta, Martinez and Llorente! Unlikely but Rafa likes them all and if scouts WERE at the bilboa game who’s to say they were only looking at Amoriebieta? These three would be perfect, and we COULD generate the cash to get them:
Around £320-30m left for transfers:
The ‘trio’ for £20m plus 2 or 3 of Babel, Voronin, Itandje and Lucas.
PS. Rafa just sent San Jose on loan to Bilboa (sky sports) is it me or could you see something happening?
Warrenisaredfan - August 17th, 2009 at 10:28 pm

Carew is a very good shout but as i have said before i would prefer Carlton Cole.
