Liverpool Have Just £1.5m to Spend: Are the Americans Bleeding the Club Dry?

Rafa Benitez has been left devastated after being told he has just £1.5million to spend by his club’s American owners.
The Liverpool manager has struggled against budget constraints all summer because of the financial crisis at Anfield, and revealed a week ago he was in talks to try and extend his kitty.
Benitez wants a centre half to provide cover in a crucial position, with Daniel Agger suffering from a back problem, and he also would love to sign a wide player who can also operate as a stand in striker.
But after talks with the Yanks, he has been told there is only a miserly sum available – which will not even buy one player, never mind the two he desires.
It has left the Liverpool searching frantically around for a loan signing before the transfer window closes at the end of August, and he has sounded out several targets.
That loan period was up in June, but with the Bernabeu side signing Valencia centre half Raul Albiol in the summer they have no room in the squad for Garay and will consider another loan. (Daily Mirror)
If this is accurate then It just goes to show what we as Liverpool fans should expect from the Yanks. Many believe that Messrs Gillett and Hicks will bleed the club dry and then leave, and if recent evidence is anything to go by, then that looks more and more likely.
This season we have spent around £15.5m outright, because the majority of the Alberto Aquilani fee is held over dependent on other factors and a large chunk of the Glen Johnson fee was paid by the money Portsmouth still owed us. However we have recouped around £35m from the sales of Alonso. Arbeloa, Anderson and Leto, we have also removed Jermaine Pennant’s hefty wage from our outgoings, so how the hell do we have no money?
Last season we may have spent around £10m more than we sold, but that’s by no means a kings ransom and pales into insignificance when compared to any other Premier League club, hell Stoke City spend £15m more than they sold last season!
A club of the size and stature and marketability as Liverpool shouldn’t be in this mess. I am not suggesting that the club should be up there with Chelsea and Man City but I do expect them to have a pot to piss in!
Outrageous!

I say we liverpool fans should sell liverpool 2 a richer person. or we will not win the title as we dream of. right

i do not think we have that amount left in the transfer kitty
i think it’s a diversion to warn the press about transfers
if this is true
then those two north american owners should sell to the kuwaiti business man as soon as possible

U hope we get sold to kuwaiti. Maybe liverpool r tryin to cover up a deal for silva n turner till they r done.
Donavan Ried - August 18th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Looks like when the yanks said to Rafa”You have £30m to spend in the transfer window” they meant it …… they have banked the money from the Alonso sall and other, which is ok, if they intend to use it to reduce the clubs debt, but not so good if Liverpool was expecting to buy a new player…

What a cock you are Jed! How the hell is the fact we have no transfer funds mean we will be in the relegation battle! We have the best striker in the world and one of the best midfielders! And the rest of our squad is of a high quality! Typical pleb just trying to be clever but it eint working mate……dont give up your day job!
Anyway….as for the artical i still find it hard to believe so i personly think e have more than that because last week we had £6million rejected from Hull so how does that work!
But still the Yanks need to sell up to either the DIC or the Kuwaiti busnes man!
ken - August 18th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
fucking nonsense no quotes to show this … mirror chatting bollocks we had 6million bid rejected for turner so how can we only have 1.5mil dick heads.
Anonymous - August 18th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Apparently the Yanks have gone back on their word on the amount promised to Rafa to spend on transfers. Which would explain why so little has happened at Anfield in terms of signings. Wasn’t it meant to be £20mil plus Keane’s £16mil plus anything generated from sales? So that’s £36mil plus £37.5mil from Alonso, Arbeloa, Leto, Hobbs and Anderson, minus £37.5mil for Aquilani and Johnson so that should still leave us with the £36mil to spend. Where has this money gone?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
With us being cash strapped and still needing cover we need to look at bringing in players on the cheap that can still do a job. Here’s a few that come instantly to mind:
van Nistelrooy – Sam Allardyce was looking to bring to Blackburn as a Santa Cruz replacement for £1.5mil but couldn’t afford his wage demands. Would be perfect cover for Torres in Rafa’s 4-2-3-1 formation; he’s used to leading the line and succesfully played up top for Holland as a lone striker, back to goal, linking well with midfield. Will have lost a yard of pace but was never the quickest at the best of times. Slight injury worries but I’m sure can still do a job.
Sol Campbell – Forget Shawcross, Turner, Hangeland, Wheater, Richards and even Distin. All we need is a 4th choice CB cover who can slot in playing less than 10 games a season to rest the likes of Carragher, Agger and Skrtel. You can’t get more experience than Sol, been there, done it and can do a job for us.
David Beckham – Looking to play in top flight from January to have a chance at being in England’s World Cup squad. Bring him in on loan to add something new to our midfield as well as a threat from set pieces. Probably more useful as a CM than RM nowadays but can still play down the right to good effect against lesser teams.
Patrick Viera – Arsene Wenger has been looking to bring his old skipper back to Arsenal and if they don’t I don’t see why we shouldn’t be interested. Seasoned veteran and model professional. Will add more quality to our midfield and as long as it keeps Lucas off the starting line up it’s got to be good news!
What do you guys think?
If Liverpool do nothing else this season, I hope that the joke that is Hicks and Gillett sell the club. They have been the worst thing that’s happened to Liverpool since Souness had the reigns! If only David Moores had sold to DIC!!!! We would be laughing by now!

That,s the problem with these snidey pair of bastards god how i fuckin hate them for what they are doing to our club. And i also feel very sorry for Rafa the man is just banging his head against a brick wall when it comes to asking for transfer money.By the looks of things, it,s never going to get any better whils,t these two are in charge. The way it,s going, wer,e going to have to take drastic action ourselves to get them out i.e,boycott the games and don,t buy the merchandise,it,s the only way.How else can we get rid? Look at the support in asia and norway during pre season, phenomenal the amount of red shirts was amazing. I myself had the new black top the day it was launched i just can,t help it. LFC is a drug,i buy every bloody shirt that comes out along with absolute thousands and thousands of other people. So of course it,s going to be difficult to oust these bastards and they know this.We all love the club and we want to go to the games and we want to wear the tops so yes it,s probably going to be impossible. But oh! how fuckin frustrating it all is, it makes me so angry.$%^&*()_)*^$%$£”"$^&*()_()*&&^^%% Sorry about all that noise then,iv,e just twatted the cat.

I’ve no doubt this is a calculated smoke screen designed to get the muppet English press to stop sniffing around and informing Sir Alex every time Rafa mentions a player from another club. Seems every time there is a rumor about Liverpool wanting to buy, the old drunk turns up to have interest in the same player. Me thinks Sir Alexs’ talent evaluation days are no longer up to snuff (see Michael Owen signing) and he is trying to scalp off a true master of finding the goods!

If this is true it is bollocks. Mark my words if these two yank s** of a b**** mother******* stay at our club we are going down! I hate them, i hate Parry for picking them ahead of DIC when he had the chance and i hate David Moores for seconding that choice. It is more upsetting than anything else. Then again there are no quotes in the article and we may only find out in the pre stoke interview from Rafa himself (body language should say alot but the question will definately be asked). Doesn’t change my opinion and these two clowns need to be out NOW! God if i had the money i would have bought them both out ages ago. The second they turned around about the stadium spelt trouble!

campbell can be back up 4 defence coz i think skrtel n agger r da future for l’pool defence n also da yungsta kelly looks good
tuncay is just a betta version of kuyt or even tuncay=kuyt+benayoun
he wrks his ass off lyk kuyt n has the flair n dribblin skill lik benayoun.
he can play behind torres n is alwaiz a threat n gerrard can go deeper like alonso was, den wen aquilani is back we can go back 2 4-2-3-1 formation aquilani takin alonsoz spot, so we hav 2 formation options wich r deadly

I am both a Liverpool and Arsenal fan, admiring the Kop’s enormous spirit and never say die mentality (remember Istanbul,2005!). I know Hicks and Gillett, one of whom owns part of my avourite Ice hockey team!
Here’s the truth lads……..they aren’s c**ts, they aren’t even a**h***s, they’re far worse, they’re BUSINESSMEN. They couldn’t give a shite about Liverpool, they haven’t the foggiest about the Great game, which end of a Football to kick or anything having to do with the Kop’s tradition and history.
Here is what will happen, mark my words; Rafa will get more money to buy, but not a great deal more. Being a master recruiter, he will get what he needs but it will be a close run thing! H & G will milk the club for all its worth OR cut and run once it is obvious that they will make a big loss. They’ll sell to any oil sheik, drug lord, corrupt politician, IT billionaire, russian mafia czar ad nauseam, who offer them the right price.
Once the deal is done, Liverpool will buy like crazy, trying to catch up. You have an excellent team who are 1-2 players short of an EPL winning side. That shitehead “Jed” is just pulling your chains so chillout, sit back and watch the Pool fight for 1st with the other top 3. they don’t call them the top 4 for nothing!
Ryan - August 18th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
Well, let’s just go with the most recent example of this Villain, Ryan Shawcross. Lad was on no one’s radar until Rafa showed interest, not ManU are poised. BTW, why do Manc twats always feel the need to comment on all things Liverpool?
Ryan - August 18th, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Furthermore, you quantified your question with asking for players the old drunk has signed. It’s not even about that. It’s about the fact that all United have to do is feign interest and the transfer price goes double, effectively taking out any other suitors while they really have no interest in making a deal. It’s underhanded shite tactics and the Brit press is more than happy to oblige United at every turn, almost on the absurd level of the game officials.

PANIC! PANIC! PANIC! that’s what the liverpool fans are doing ,and if the £1.5 news is true then sure we have all the reasons to do so.
But before that lets have a look at where we stand now.
SCENARIO: last season till jan we were the favorites to win the title ,thanks to a
great gerrad torres partnership, our defence was solid , the wingers were not only forming but also netting the ball(the rise of benayoun and the excellence of riera ) at crucial moments
plus we had a fully charged, 110% giving striker cum winger Dirk kuyt.
but there was something which is missing now the PARTNERSHIP between ‘Alonso and mascherano ‘.
alonso’s gone, mascherano wants to .
carragher not fully fit ,aurellio injured .
NOW NOW NOW , what else has changed.
our wingers are as much capable as they were last season , torres n gerrad requires one match to click back to form, and the defence didn’t looked shaky at
all against the spurs( though i agree it will be tested against the likes of manu and arsenal ) .
so our problem area is the midfield . we have lost our general to real madrid but others are still very much there with the addition of Glen jhonson .
so all we need is to buy a replacement of Xabi (though auilliani is there )but he is injured as of now and a backup would always be good.
now we need a striker as much as we need a midfielder . and a proven striker
who can lead on his own (and there are many names to choose from) in case torres gets injured .
defence i don’t feel needs further reinforcements.
so there is nothing to panic we are as good as we were last season and are more than capable to beat the rising city and the falling Arsenal.
BUT if we don’t get a decent midfielder and a striker we may still miss the title
for a whisker.
as for Riera Can’t afford to loose him.
I actually am Rafa Benitez - August 18th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
It is a fackt that we have more money than that. If Silva does not play tomorrow night then that means I am siging him and I may let Riera go as a result. Mr Gillette has sold his stake in his Ice Hockey club and we have refinanced the loans, I just want to keep the transfer fees down. Remember that the Mirror is just another set of lazy hacks.
Don’t worry Liverpool fans – you will see one more big signing.

You made a great point there about Beckham paying CM and against slow full backs can play on the wing. I think he could play Alonso’s role to some degree. His passing is as great as ever and athough he’s not the fastest, neither was Alonso. He’s not the greatest tackler but Masch will cover him. He can still ping the ball aywhere on the pitch whenever he wants. It won’t happen as Galaxy won’t let him leave for the whole season but maybe from January…
Those dumb red necks are destroying this club and should fuck off and be banned from any relations with any team in any sport…bar Man Utd

stop blaming the yanks for everything. its nonsense. the club was burried in debt under moores who had that idiot parry running us into the ground. the yanks bought him out, accepted the clubs debts, and give their personal assets as guarantees for the clubs debt. hardly villains. they purchased torres and mascherano and have given rafa good money to spend. not as much like city, chelsea, and scum, but you can’t spend what you ain’t got, thats life. so we ain’t the richest. we never were. but we were the best. and we can be the best. if everyone works together. fans included. start supporting the club. not just moaning about owners, or team selection, or rotation policy … just support them or go away and support some shite team you deserve. save all that wasted energy about fans buying the club and the spirit of shankly (he would turn in his grave) and spend your energy supporting our club, our team, our players, our manager, and yes, our owners. we are liverpool fc. ynwa

We have an excellent team(even with the absence of Xabi)and As Rafa said before it would be enough if he is able to keep the current suad together .
He lost Xabi . but gone is gone . we still have more than hope to win the title.
its unfortunate we cann’t go on buying players like torres and xabi every year.
the yanks are not that rich .
we dont have 3 world class strikers like Arsenal have, nor do we have the 80,60 million signings of Real but if you are a true liverpool fan you know we do have a team we have Loved for last 4 years and should stand firmly by their side .

phoenix_red - August 18th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
if he’s a smart businessman i don’t see why some money won’t come our way. unless he’s seen investments in the US or other parts of the world that would be more lucrative than the liverpool brand name with a team that will make a bucketload of cash if they win epl and champs league. i know these are ifs and buts but that’s invesyment for you. are you telling me that there isn’t standard profit to be made from lfc even without winning trophy? i think our last audit will tell you there is.
if they [both hicks and gillet] can invest 50m from montreal sale and other concerns on top of the reported 20m already given for players they could make their money back in a year or so

Couldn’t be more true. Benayoun has to be in the first team if we want to beat teams even if it means dropping Kuyt to accomodate him. Play Kuyt as a second striker because he is crap as a winger, hard work isn’t the only thing that wins games, besides Benayoun has bags of hard work. Seeing as Aquilani is injured drop Gerrard back into midfield particularly for tough away games as Lucas is a wuss.
1st team

Johnson Carragher Skrtel/Agger Aurelio/Insua
Mascherano

The deal is this, Hicks’ Texas Rangers are currently in a Playoff position for MLB. Hicks has ZERO loyalty to Liverpool and is currently focused on the baseball team as he is a native Texas and has to live there, not on Merseyside. The sad truth is, he could give a fuck about us, Anfield, Rafa, transfers, any of it. Imagine, Liverpool FC, the neglected play thing of an American oil mogul. I try not to think about this too much as it makes me want to punch a baby.
Anonymous - August 18th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
There are some very concerning situations developing within our club.
Although Glen Johnson is a good signing we have lost Arbeloa meaning we still need cover in the right back berth. I know we have Degen aswell as some youngsters who no doubt a lot of people will tell me “can do a job” and that I should “show faith in” yet I can’t help feel that we are still dramatically short of good squad players. If Rafa was to play his most talented team then we would have a very weak bench. For example, if I was to name his best (in my opinion) starting eleven and then list there understudies beneath them there would be a noticeable lack of talent in several positions. If we were to have a few injuries or bans, we would be weakened severely. ie..
(this is a fictional situation for demonstration purposes)
Riena Injury List
Cavalieri Mascherano 2wks
Kuyt 6 wks
Johnson Carragher Agger Aurelio Skrtel 2wks
Degen Ayala Skrtel Insua Lieva 1 wk
Kuyt Mascherano Aquilani Riera Suspended
Benayoun Spearing Lieva Babel Gerrard 3 games
Babel 1 game
Gerrard
voronin Other Squad Players
Torres El Zhar
ngog Dossena
Ayala
Nemeth
Plessis
Kelly
Admitedly there are other players in the squad like Gulacsi and pacheco but I’ve got as much chance of a game as they have.
If you add in the Injuries and bans to this team you are left with a middle of the road team with a terrible bench. Even the most tactically astute amongst you will find it hard to pick a team from the remainder that would beat the likes of Fulham, Everton,Man City, Villa or tottenham. I never even mentioned our main rivals and allready it is obvious that we would struggle.
We also have various players who often spend long spells or several short spells on the physios table. Torres, Skrtel, Agger, Aquilani, Aurelio, Degen and Dossena. Other than Dossena and Degen each of these players would be sorely missed.
I realsie that reports suggest that we can’t afford to buy anymore players but surely it is glaringly obvious that we can less afford to sell. There is two weeks of transfers left and If we sell Riera now we would be doing ourselves a great dis-service in terms of strength.
I don’t want any last minute players to sign from abroad and take a year to settle.
We don’t have the squad for luxury purchases. I certainly don’t want to see Rafa thwarted again when the yanks take the money off him and leave us further depleted.
There may be some players available for a swap deal but other than Van Nistelrooj none of them have premier league experience. We have enough players in our team who need the experience of league games without filling it with several more.
Lucas, Babel, Degen, Aquilani, Dossena, Ngog, Ayala, Spearing, San Jose, Kelly,
Voronin, El Zhar and many more are still in need of work to be of a premier league standard.
We must not sell to buy!

The money available to Rafa was based on the sale of Alonso, who Benitez said they knew was going since May. So, by getting rid of Alonso for £30m (or however much it was – they purposely will not name any figures this transfer window due to the club’s money problems) Rafa knew he could bring in somebody for £20m and then perhaps have cheap cover for about £5m. Then there are all the improved wages on top of this, which people tend to forget about… That’s got to be worth at least £10m to keep all those who signed on again this summer.
Getting rid of Leto, Anderson and Pennant for fuck all is more a of a “dead weight wages” money saving exercise, but they have really fucked up letting Arbeloa go. The Alonso sale was a given, but they really are weak in in the areas Arbeloa used to either cover or own (RB, LB, CB). Buying in Distin isn’t going to help cover at RB and LB and to be honest he’ll still be third choice after Carra, Skrtel and Agger. He’ll be the new Sami. That’s why there’s no point bringing in Turner (who I think is excellent and would be the next Upson/Rio at a big club) because then either Skrtel or Agger will end up playing less and probably eventually going. We really need Agger playing more. Him and Johnson both look like with more games they’ll be much better at their defensive duties.
Unfortunately, I think Rafa is stuck in a rut between politics and skill. He needs to start playing Babel as Torres’ or Gerrard’s understudy, because he cannot play that outside left role he is forcing him to. He constantly comes inside, which works for Benayoun, but Babel would be much better down the middle. If anything, I’d drop Gerrard to midfield. I think a lot of our problem lies with Mr. Untouchable, who if he were anybody else would be made to play in a position better suited to his game.

Mr. Chopper you make some excellent points as does red_army.
Sam!lfc - August 18th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
What Rafa needs to do is think about his transfer targets and think to him self who stays healthy the most, who doesn’t committ the most fouls, who scores alot etc etc but he needs to listen to the liverpool faithful (well the ones who aren’t in dreamland)on our opinions!
Also if the American owners don’t are about us then why are they still our owners, why don’t they just sell up and put us and them out of their misery!?
Sam!lfc - August 18th, 2009 at 5:25 pm
spelling mistake it should say care about us not don’t are about us

I suppose then that Fergie is at fault for you guys buying Dossena o Deggen?
Utd could very well say the same abt Chelsea when Utd were after Essien/Robben for example.
Look, get over it, saying Fergie is to blame is really clutching at straws and makes you sound a little demented.
Look Rafa has been there for 5 years now and really should have a set up at L´pool that allows for a youngster to step up and show what he can do aswell as save Rafa from actually spending…o sorry thats Fergie fault aswell.

Can anyone please tell me why the yanks are hell bent on keeping hold of LFC, when they could get a healthy profit on their original outlay?
Anonymous - August 18th, 2009 at 6:31 pm
2 things
first the yanks ARE selling the club
secoung this is a smoke screen so rafa can sign some players with out shit face putting his dick head in scratch it and say we are trying to sign that liverpool target
Hoogle - August 18th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Question:How did the press get the information about the 1.5 million?
Answer: They didn’t. They made it up as withy most stories they print.
We may not be as wealthy as some clubs (Citeh & the Chavs spring to mind) but there must be money for transfers. I still think that there is another trick left in the old pony yet and there is still time to sign players.
red - August 18th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
evening all
i think there are a couple of points:
1) and something we are all agreed on. h & g are the biggest wankers on the planet. they have completely fucked up the club and are running into the ground. all to keep funding their yank interests. they are clearly the wrong people for the job.
2) this is the fault of two people – rick parry and david moores – who sold the club to the americans ahead of DIC so they could each pocket 500K more than if they had sold out to dic they are the real disgraces.
3) the club is badly run anyway – look at how well man ure and real madrid market themselves. in comparison, we are piss poor. so much market potential and we have a crap stadium that’s falling to bits (look closely next time you got anfield) and not making enough from gerrard and torres merchandise.
4) clearly we need to sell the club to better investors. unfortunately, the fact that whoever buys us has to also fork out 200-400 million on a new stadium is a turn-off.
what can we do? pretty much fuck all other than sit and watch the yanks tear us apart until someone gives them the money they want.
fucking hate yanks!
Anonymous - August 18th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
I have to say the writing was on the wall from day one regarding the yanks when they took out a big loan to buy the club and put only a small part of their own money into the deal.
Then promised a new stadium which is the only way we will ever get closer to the mancs, where is it now.
How were they other going to build a new stadium when they won’t even invest itheir own money in the ownership of the club.
And now we hear silence from the mighty yanks after selling probably our best player last year for 30mil alledgedly thinks just don’t add up here. Either they are hiding a big signing or the money as fallen into the black hole of the yanks pockets.
Just sell to someone who wants to own LFC sooner rather than later.
Everyone knows they are just in it to sell and make a profit on their meagre investment.

red – August 18th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
You are spot on. Its sad but true these yanks are making us laughing stocks and are now driving the club into the ground!

Jesus f8ckng christ! Another donkey with a ponytail
We’re out of money, Rafa’s pissed off [ref blast on Sunday, getting someone to leak he's got no budget] whos going to go first Yanks or Rafa? I hope it’s Yanks and he sticks out for someone buying them out. – at the very least some key players could go with him if he went
The big I am - August 18th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
I can smell another Corinthians from Tom Hicks . . . google him and find out !!! he bought it with another company he bled the club dry, promesd the best players . . . . new stadium it never happend, is this starting to sound familiar ? but then he bailed!!! the club were left in a worse place then they started and got relegated i think ! ! !
The yanks need to go its as simple as that!!!! there money hungry basterds and there just using us to get richer, They wont give rafa any money for transfers but i bet they pocket a hefty some . . . each!!!!
something needs to happen before our club goes to shit!!!! it dosent matter how good a team plays if the finances arnt sound they break down.

Can everyone calm down about the Greek? If this is true, it’s called a stop gap. We are crushed by injuries right now. WTF do you want Rafa to do, spend 12 million on one of the English names thrown out in the past two days. I’d call that pushing the panic button. ONE GAME

When u see wat other yanks say about these parasites, it doesnt exactly fill you with hope for rafa transfer runds. http://blogs.dallasobserver.com/unfairpark/2009/04/wsj_says_tom_hicks_could_event.php Apparantly these parasites hav done over quite a few teams along the way

Jim - August 19th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Let’s face it there not here for the love of the club or even the love of the game it’s all about the money
