Liverpool Confirm £1.5m Kyrgiakos Deal

Liverpool today agreed a deal with AEK Athens for centre-back Sotirios Kyrgiakos , subject to a medical.
The 30-year-old Greek international will arrive at Melwood for a medical examination before the weekend.Rafa Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: “We have nearly done the deal subject to a medical. He is a player with experience who can hopefully help us in defence.
“He has experience in British football and Rangers. After that with Frankfurt and the national team. He’s a good player in the air, strong and aggressive. We were looking for a player with experience.
“He will have the medical this week, it has to be before the weekend.”
On how the signing would impact on young centre-backs such as Martin Kelly and Daniel Ayala, Benitez added: “The young players know they need experience and so to learn alongside people with this experience is better.” (Official Liverpool Site)
Even though Daniel Ayala performed with distinction against the notoriously rough and tumble aggressive Stoke City attack signing the man mountain that is Greek International Sotirios Kyrgiakos makes a lot of sense both in terms of his abilities and experience but perhaps more importantly in terms of price.

BULLLSHIT! if we had no money, why couldn’t we have got campbell on a free?

agree with the first two comments, rafa said he wanted someone who is experienced to help the youngsters kelly and ayala…rafa a rash signing…sol campbell is an accomplished footballer who culd pretty much play in any premier league team…campbell has played close to 500 games in the league etc and more than 50 international caps…his presence and experience wuld rub off on kelly, ayala, insua and even the rest of the defenders, im sure he wuld have jumped at the opportunity to play for a top four club again shuld rafa had gone after him…
i cnt see this guy doing too much wen agger and skrtel are fit again, mainly there as abit of variation in trainig, but i hope this guy proves me wrong

has campell taken the chance to go to newcastle or is he away to notts county on a player coaching role. either one of these guys would of been good for me at least now we have some back up how many defenders do we have now? and how many or injured?

'MON THE POOL - August 20th, 2009 at 11:25 am
we are bound to have at least 10 mil left !! rafa just likes to pretend he has no money to put off other clubs, and prevent them from knowing who he wants!!

what did ayala do wrong last night answer nothing rafa keep your money and blood these youngsters
appledave - August 20th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
i hope this is just a smokescreen and we get Shawcross, Taylor or Wheater instead.
john - August 20th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
im hoping in the next couple of days we will make a big signing out of the blue. it wouldnt surprise me if rafa jus sed he has no money just so it doesnt spark a bidding war for hes next big target. i also agree that ayala did nothin terribly wrong last night
red til i die - August 20th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
please dont sighn him rubbish at rangers
Ash T - August 20th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
hi every one im back from my holidays
why do people want us to sign wheater, taylor… ect who will cost 10mill approx just for a 4th choice centre back.
we will only need him for a season or 2 for the youngest to progress more
and i would rather the money go on a cheap defender so the rest of the money can go on on vaart who can play lm/cm/rm/ss and would be a cheaper option than silva
anonymous - August 20th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
yeah get vaart this season get silva next and get agyero convinced that he has ano future at a madrid and wait for his contract to end and liver get him on free same as villa and messie
anonymous - August 20th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
get vaart this season then get silva / hamsik and elm / s defour
anonymous - August 20th, 2009 at 6:09 pm

IsareliKaka:
if this geezer was part of that Euro winning Greek side then it could be a very tasty bit of business. For £2M it’s not exactly a risk!

I think this is the perfect option for a fourth choice defender and I think that he’ll fill the role that Hyppia left. There’s no point in investing ten million in a fourth choice defender and as much as I would’ve loved to see Sol Campell wearing red, his wages would’ve been too high for a fouth choice, and he wouldn’t have wanted to settle for fourth choice either. Should be an experienced and inexpensive pick up.
