I, like many others, was dubious about the amount of money Rafa spent on Portsmouth right back Glen Johnson but as it turns out it could well be the best £11m the Liverpool boss has ever spent.
Let’s face it the full back position is one that rarely grabs the headlines and never gets the plaudits it deserves but when you think about it the wide defensive position can be key both to the success of the back line as well as the potency of the club’s attacking play.
Alvaro Arbeloa was a trier a worker, but by no means the complete article when it came to his performances in a Reds jersey. His role was far more reserved and controlled with occasional glimpses of attacking prowess and hell even a good long range finish or two. His England international replacement is on the other hand an entirely different kettle of fish.
In the modern game full backs are required to be as effective going forward as they are solid and composed when coming up against the opposition’s own attacking advances. These days the attributes needed are not just the ability to swing in a good cross from the flank but also the ability to make forward runs into space and even be able to beat a man and Glen Johnson has shown in his first two competitive matches for the club that he can do just about any of these tasks with aplomb.

Given that a sizable chunk of the fee to bring the former Chelsea and West Ham man to Anfield was covered by the south-coast club’s debt to the club relating to their signing of former Liverpool man Peter Crouch, and that chunk is said to be as much as £7m, meaning that the 24 year old came at a price of a mere £11m and in the age of hugely inflated transfer fees that is a bargain.
Add to the equation that with a World Cup on the horizon Johnson will be battling as hard as ever to cement his place as England’s first choice right back. Clearly he is already a player that Fabio Capello greatly admires but in order to remain his favourite he will know he must consistently perform whilst at the club.
Obviously it’s always good to not get too carried away but at the same time it’s pleasing to see the impact the Londoner has already made in the first week of the season. He’a already finding good open spaces to receive possession in an advanced area and has already scored, assisted and won penalties whilst also firmly repelling the attackers he has come up against.
Remember too that Glen already has one Premier League title under his belt and will be all to keen to assist us into breaking this horrendous 19 year wait for the title.

If he was 11m then we sold Crouch for 2m. That wasn’t great business was it. The truth is we paid 17m or so for Johnson regardless of what pompey owed us

But it is still £17 million! Are you saying that we therefore sold Crouch for £4 million? On a side note it was a mistake selling Peter.
But Johnson does look very good! We just need another striker now and we’ll have a good balance.
Get rid of Itandje, Degan, Dossena and Vorinin. If we can!
Forget the greek lad, Ayala looked ok last night and Agger and Skrtel are out for a few weeks not the season. I’d rather see any spare cash on a support striker or even van de vaart.

Well it was 11m when you come to think about it, we might never have got that Crouch money back anyway, Pompey are skint!
Good article by the way. I was a fan of Arbeloa but Johnson looks in a different league.

What a player. He said in his interview when he signed that he always had a soft spot for Liverpool. He said his first shirt his mother bought him was a Liverpool shirt. So the decision to join Liverpool was easy.
Just glad he did not return to Chelsea.

I think yeah! this was the Rafa’s best buy this year but i want good midfilders as i want david beckham in the right because i know what he i capable of and he could be good in BPL as he played absolutely great in Milan and they need still good central back like vidic or ferdinand and they need specially a Left back which could be heinze or any other who could come to anfield…………..

i want david beckham in the anfield as he could really help them and they can help him in playing in 2010 world cup and that’s a good buy of johnon by rafa but they still need some defenders and a striker who could come after the half and bang the good in duo with torres and they should sell Ryan babel he is the worst in the anfield riera is better than him………………….alo good buy of aqualaini…………………..

To whoever suggested heinze just before…he’s allready moved clubs this transfer window, oh yeah and its the EPL not BPL. Not convinced beckham is the right man for us either, but in my opinion he may be more suited to the alonso role now he’s a bit older, he never was very fast(like xabi) and his long passing is good. He doesn’t have the pace for prem winger anymore. That elm fella looks awesome from what i’ve seen, i’d much prefer we signed him than becks, but beckham would provide an extra english player for champs league so we would mayber have a stronger champs league squad.
How fucking weird would it be to see LFC vs Man U, owen playing for them and beckham playing for us? !

Let’s face facts, we were owed money from a club with no money – what do we do? I thought the figure was nearer £15M, the papers always add on a few millions whenever they like (I’m guessing it may go higher with add-ons).
Anyway, he looks good so far, determined and his attacking play is looking really good. If he chips in with a few goals too, it will all help.
Perhaps more interesting, is the little conspiracy between Talksport and Paddy power in saying Rafa had left LFC. Trying to destabilise our club? – get lost you idiots.

IsraeliKaka:
I was never dubious about Johnson…I’ve wanted us to sign him for over a year. We need players like him to win those home games. PLayers who can beat a man, especially defenders who by coming forward give us a man over on the other team. The reason Utd have done so well for so many years is because they have players like Evra and Rio Ferdinand who by coming forward push the other team, back and back. Please stay fit Glen!

Glen Johnson – top player, exactly what we need at Liverpool if Kuyt is playing RM to bomb on and add width pace and top wing play.

“After two games, the verdict would seem to be in, whatever happened to wait and see? Bloody knee-jerks!”…… It’s not just two games – he’s been doing it for Portsmouth all last season. Why do you think he’s cemented his place as England’s first choice RB?!
anonymous – August 20th, 2009 at 5:47 pm
“so who the hell would we take out of the team to accomodate beckham?”…..Surely this is the dilemma Rafa needs to compete with Man U and Chelsea! Look at the size and quality of their squads compared to ours! We were lucky last season that we didn’t have any serious injury problems. If we had the amount Arsenal had we wouldn’t have made the top 4!

Best £11m ever spent is very misleading as others rightly pointed out. Although he is a fantastic player he is worth £12-14m not £17.5m. Also we lost out massively on selling Arbeloa at a cut price. He Should be at least £5-6m.
I still can’t work out what is going on at Liverpool. I thought the signing of the big Greek lad confirmed that there was no money left for signings, but Rafa has said that he’s still looking to make signings. Is there money available or not?!?!?!?!
Sneijder or van der Vaart would be great sigings and with Aquilani signing would make selling Alonso a good peice of business. Villa/Aguero and Silva will just have to wait til next summer!

Seriously, if he plays like this even for half the season he will have proven his worth.
I was also surprised at Lucas….hes getting slated alot but if you watched the whole gave you would see how his tackling and his whole game has improved.
The fans need to back Lucas because the applause he was getting on Weds made him such a better player

agree with you paddy and reds lewis. lucas definately did play well on wednesday night. i thought he had a better game than mascherano actually, but thats just my opinion. although i know his passing will probably never be as good as alonso’s,, i have to commend lucas, and rafa more importantly for letting him get further up the field. for the first goal you wouldnt see alonso on the egde of the box feeding gerrard through. defensviely i thought he still dived in a few times, but it is an improvement, but overall i was pleased with his performance. hope he improves throughout the season.

He cost £18m – just because some of that was owed from Crouch does not mean it was part of the transfer fee. Liverpool have now had to write that off and so it has the same effect on their accounts.
Johnson is NOT worth 18m when what liverpool desperately need is another goalscorer to back-up Torres and at least one winger capable of delivering a cross.
Johnson is a good attacker but a liability in defence, he got taken to the cleaners against Holland recently and was used in midfield by Pompey last season…
loading...
Reds Lewis - August 21st, 2009 at 12:08 pm
if wednesday evening was anything to go by then Johnson was far from a liability in defence. he has the pace to track back from his forward runs….hence why he is so good at his position.
I also think that given time….Ngog could be quite good back up, maybe even by next season as second choice striker. His movement is very good, seems to be emulating torres very well.

D.J.CAREY - August 21st, 2009 at 2:26 pm
Johnson was very good on Wednesday but for me the man of the match was Masch, he was very good. Lucas? most people here are saying that he had a good game, personally I will reserve judgment on this player as I think he didn’t do much wrong on Wed night but he didn’t do anything wonderful either, I hope he comes good, I just wouldn’t be getting to excited about him yet, he wasn’t exactly playing against the cream of the crop on Wed night.
Johnson looked very lively going forward, great quick feet, I just hope that he can defend as good when the pressure is on and hopefully he will. Masch seems to be playing better so far this season, ok only 2 matches gone but still I think there is a more offensive element to his game than last year.
Going forward I hope that Rafa learnt from last season, go for the win, 2 draws, 2 wins & 2 losses is better than 6 draws any day of the week.

johnson looked great, no doubt about it, but lets not get carried away lads on here, after all it was against stoke, who lets admit aren’t one of the best teams in the league. But if he keeps up his form he could turn out to be one of the buys of the season. Lets hope aqua gets fit soon, along with aurelio and agger so then we can see our fully fit squad. And then we might be able to talk more about our chances of winning the league this year. mark
