Seems like a clever move to me.
Arsenal are considering making an £8million bid for Newcastle defender Steven Taylor.
However, Everton are also in the running and are understood to have opened negotiations with the Championship club in an attempt to secure a replacement for Joleon Lescott, who is a still a target for Manchester City.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is a long-term admirer of the 23-year-old and sent a scout to watch Taylor in his side’s 1-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in midweek.
Although a striker remains Arsenal’s priority before the transfer window closes at the end of the month, Everton’s interest in Taylor may force Wenger to act. (Evening Standard)
In my eyes this would be a sensible move. Yes Vermaelen and Gallas have been a great partnership thus far but its worth bringing in more options to keep the first choice pair on their toes and to help to cover for injuries or loss of form.
Steven Taylor is a ‘wear your heart on your sleeve’ style player who has improved the less obvious parts of the game that has previously troubled him. By this I mean that 18 months ago he was a bit of a lump it merchant and found it hard to distribute the ball well as well as knowing when to put a challenge in and when to shepherd a player out wide.
He is still fairly young and is an England regular of the future and well worth making a move for.
