Will last nights performance result in the American owners giving Rafa some cold hard cash…probably not!

Real Madrid v D.C. United

Rafa Benitez has been alerted to the possibility of signing Arjen Robben from Real Madrid but faces a battle with Manchester United.

The Spanish tactician has been a long time admirer of the winger and the defeat to Aston Villa on Monday night has highlighted the desperate need to add some width to the side.

The Dutch star could be available for around £18m and Benitez could well demand that owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett put their hands in their pockets and stump up some of the cash they received for Xabi Alonso in order for Benitez to strengthen the squad. Reports in Spain suggest that the former Chelsea winger is now available but Benitez is not alone in his admiration as United boss Sir Alex Ferguson also likes him and has the money to hand to buy him.

The arrival of Robben would again cast a doubt over the future of winger Ryan Babel who has failed to live up to his expectations at Anfield since his arrival from Ajax for around £11m two years ago. (Clubcall)

Considering the continuing problems associated with the inability of Ryan Babel to prove he is worth a starting spot at Liverpool and the fact that Rafa Benitez appears to not be so keen on Albert Riera at present, we could do with a new left winger, or play Yossi out there instead.

Arjen Robben is another Real Madrid man who may or may not have a future at the Bernabeu, the thing is, he costs money and we don’t have it. So not sure how we can persuade the Spanish side to sell, maybe in very small installments?

The former Chelsea man is still a top notch performer and probably keen to get first team football that he may struggle to achieve at the Spanish giants, also he is a proven Premier League player who may well be interested in a return to England.
