Three Players Who Are Simply Not Good Enough: Liverpool 1-3 Aston Villa Match Ratings and Analysis
by YNWA on August 25th, 2009 638 words | 62 commentsSimply unacceptable.

Sometimes I would like to crawl into Rafa’s head and find out what he is thinking, and last night that urge magnified itself a million fold as our boss made a stream of tactical errors that really confused me, and seemingly every other Liverpool fan.
Forget the fact we could/should have scored at least five goals and concentrate on the fact that the substitutions that were made were both poorly timed and ineffective.
Perhaps more worrying was the lack of fight in the players and the ease in which Aston Villa’s midfield so easily out fought ours. Defensive frailties were all too apparent and the way the club just turned off for the corner that led to Curtis Davies’ killer second was criminal.
We tried our hardest to get back into the game and we created a great many chances but the spark was gone and too many big name players went missing. Lucas who had been pretty decent against Stoke was back to his old self and just looked out of his depth. Mascherano wasn’t offering him too much support either and Stevie G was just plain awful.
But back to the substitutions. It made little sense to wait until the 66th minute to make changes in a home game when we were two goals down. Also bringing off Yossi Benayoun was a decision that really left me fuming, he was doing just fine and everyone knows that when the Israeli is in action, things happen. Quite why Riera remained on the bench was a mystery as well. Lets face it our subs bench is pretty weak as it is, and far less intimidating that any of the other usual ‘top four’ so to then not bring on the most effective of the bunch is just plain crazy.
Andriy Voronin pulled out of too many challenges and after three sub appearances I think we can all agree he is no better a player than the one who we opted to loan out last season. Basically the Ukrainian, Babel and Lucas are showing signs, yet again, of simply not being able to cut it and they are all in very real danger of seeing their Liverpool dream come to an end.
I will not state stupidly that our title hopes are over and I will not be stupid enough, or disloyal enough, to call for Rafa’s head. However he does need to read some players the riot act and needs to simply stop considering some options altogether. This was hopefully just a blip, an aberration, no need to panic but time for some home truths.
Reina 6 – Was at fault for the second goal and clearly ruffled by the awarding of the corner that led to the goal but needs to simply worry about his own job and not the referee’s.
Johnson 6 – Showed a couple of times that it is possible for a full back to be too attack minded.
Insua 6 – Not a good display
Carragher 6 – Oddly subdued game, seemed on a different wavelength
Skrtel 6 – Again like Carra, was just not there
Gerrard 5 – Should have scored early on and gave away stupid penalty. Not enough fight
Benayoun 7 – Decent display, always trying to get attacks going and always ready to dive in for the cause.
(Babel) 4 – Awful. On the pitch for all of 15 minutes but had many wayward shots and bad passes
Mascherano 5 – Has the Barcelona speculation affected his game? I hope not
Lucas 4 – Lucky to not be sent off. Loads of errors both in tackles and distribution
(Voronin) 5 – Nothing stuck to him and he bottled many tackles.
Torres 7 – Gave his all and was a consistent threat
Kuyt 6 – A pretty lacklustre display but by no means the worst in a Liverpool shirt.

Would everyone stop going on at Babel!!! Sure he took one or two shots he shouldn’t have but his passing was by no means bad and even displayed good skill to keep the ball but would have been better up front with Torres!!!
Reina
Johnson—-Carra—Skrtel—-Insua
Masch
Kuyt—-Gerrard—-Benayoun
Babel
Torres

Man U only had three points last year after their first Three matches and they ended up winning it!!!
If we win the matches we drawed last year then and only lose once or twice more in the year then we can still get the title!!! (It’s possible!!!)
Other top teams will go through bad patches aswell it just so happens we got ours at the start of the season.
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 10:12 am
Although, in reality the title challenge isn’t over, that result coming in the week before the transfer window closes, is not going to help bring anyone in who has real ambition.
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 10:15 am
Danny – why are you protecting Babel. He continues to be below average. It was a bad game. Everyone didnt do enough. I agree about Babel Lucas and Voronin though. We have only kept Voronin because no on else wants him. Kuyt had a poor game too. Torres was back to his moaning best though the elbow on him would been spotted by a better ref.
Liverpool have to stop believing the hype and start working. Where was the Alamo at the end. They should have been peppering the Villa defence but movement was poor and too often there were no more than 2 in the box.
Rafa sort it out.
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 10:16 am
As a Villa fan I said yesterday, if we stifle Gerrard we have a slight chance, and that’s exactly what happened. He wasn’t in the game for the majority of it which was great to see from a Villa fans point of view. You miss Alonso this season, but saying that you had a fair few chances, you just didn’t use them well. I think Benitez has made mistakes in the transfer window this summer, blowing all your money on a right back (great player, but not the best use of budget) and a crock. Think you could struggle to challenge for the title this season based on your start. UTV!

Our whole club is a shambles. Rafa out, Lucas out, Babel out, Yanks out, Voronin out. We are the only top 4 club who insist on 1 upfront even at home. It is a joke. Would rather Gerrard CM with Mascherano and give Babel or Ngog a shot upfront in a 4-4-2. Rafa has lost the plot, he is a defensive twat who has fucked right up with the whole Alonso affair. I am so angry with LFC right now. We would crumble without our amazing fans.

Yeah i dont understand why everyone keeps bagging b Babel…
I mean he simply doesn’t get enough opportunities to start or make a real impact. And hes constantly played out of position which doesn’t help…
Babel had a good preseason as did Lucas although Lucas played absolutely crap Vs Villa. What was he thinking with the clearing header???
At least he nearly scored in the next attacking poccession. He playing out of his depth.
As for gerrard. What is going on with him.. He has been poor all preseason and is still poor now… Hopefully he returns to world class form soon enough..
We need to sign some cover before the transfer season ends on loans or if the Yanks spend some money, we could buy some players. Doubt It though unfortunately. VDV and De federico would do nicely
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 10:23 am
really i would want the owners out and as far away from liverpool
it’s obvious that we need somebody with quality
the owners are too stubborn to part with 15 million to buy 2 players one right winger and 1 versetile player (de fredico & van der vaart)
owners
either step up the cash or sell the club
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 10:26 am
I don’t think this was one of those things you could blame the owners with, yes if we had different owners we may have made signings such as Villa, vdV, Sniejder, David Silva. But we didn’t, we have to face that fact and we have to play the best we can with the players we have. In my opinion if we sign vdV, and Aquilani recovers from injury, we will be back on the right path. But still…
D.I.C HELP US!

the match i blame the manager
lucas isn’t ready to step up
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 10:34 am
Its worth mentioning that Villa had some good luck last night and Liverpool some bad luck. Would you take any of the players from their team last night and put them into ours based on last nights performance? I wouldn’t. Even their best players like Young and Milner didn’t exactly destroy our defence.
You don’t see many teams lose a game 3-1 having outplayed the opposition and creating as many chances as we did. This is what happens in football and on another day the luck would have been with us.
The first goal of Lucas was bad luck, not much you can do about a deflection.
The header for their 2nd was a good goal despite being marked by two players he got a good glance on the ball, I don’t see this as anything to do with zonal marking as the idiots on EPSN were saying. If that goal was down to zonal marking I would have expected to see a player unmarked not surrounded by two players.
We hardly ever concede goals from open play, most goals are conceded from set pieces because they are the hardest things to defend in the game. If we had seen our defence cut open from incisive play by Villa I might be worried but the fact is that didn’t happen despite so called £20m wingers in young and pacey strikers.
The Penalty was bad luck from Stevie going for the ball and making a mistake which I’m sure he has put his hands up two.
Villa scored one decent goal in the header and on another day the other 2 wouldn’t have been conceded.
Biggest issue last night was Lucas again. Whatever Rafa thinks about him game after game he is our worst player and therefore our weakest link that needs replacing. It may well be that Gerrard has to drop back their and Kuyt move up top with Torres with Riera and Yossi on the wings. Yes its not ideal but we have to win that battle in midfield and Lucas just doesn’t cut it.
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 10:42 am
fuck lucas…..get him out from the team…..rubbish…
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 10:51 am
Rafa has done all he could given the resources that he has at Anfield. He does not have the luxury of good subs on the bench. Obviously he can also do without the unnecessary pressure he gets from fielding average players like LUCAS and Voronin. It is a shame that Riera has had to sit on the bench and watch average players make a messy of things. Surely Rafa can do better with even the youth players like Darby. Please Rafa trust these players like Arsenal and ManU do. Bring on Pacheco or Nemeth to partner Torres and you will not regret it. Owen was introduced to the first team a lot earlier than the ages of these players. By the time you smell the coffee it will be too late and you risk losing your best players next season. I will not be surprised when Torres, Masch and Steve get lured away from Liverpool next season. PLEASE RAFA PLEASE LISTEN to the fans and the people around you. YNWA

Snoring hell! Without any money we won’t compete.
King Kenny to take over from Rafa. He has had his chance. Should’ve kept Alonso – made him feel special – some players need that.
Johnson – good buy. Lucas – good bye!
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 10:57 am
Alonso is a big loss for Liverpool, Lucas can not replace him.
LFC should go for Steven Defour from Standard de Liege, he’s still very young but showed a lot of great things already, he’s a real fighter, the shirt would suit him perfectly!
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 11:06 am
babel awfull ha wat did he do wrong since he came on i think he was motm for us.we are lackin creativity so why not get vdv everyone else can see it why cant rafa
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 11:07 am
lucas is shit end of get him out with voronin id rather have a liverpool fan playing instead…
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 11:34 am
Last season we DESERVED to win the league BUT we DIDN’T.
We made too many draws—-against lesser teams!
The start this season—A shame!
Some fans will tell you it was HARD LUCK but MOST fans will tell you that LFC has made too many mistakes and is losing many fans:
1 Biggest mistake——selling liverpool to the Americans.
2.Selling Alonso to real madrid.
3.Buying a player who will play in 2 months time.(will he addapt to PL.)
4.Still relying on players like LUCAS and BABEL who bring HARD LUCK to LFC.
When you think about it___ Penant was not an adept of discipline, but he WAS and still a BETTER player than those two.
guillem balague muppet - August 25th, 2009 at 11:48 am
rafa has sent nemeth on loan to aek athens for the season and kept voronin should have swaped voronin for that greek honey monster he signed and gave nemeth a chance
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 11:55 am
i think mascherano was slightly better than 5/10. he did not stop working and won every tackle. worked on his own in the midfield due to the shocking Lucas.
Torres was more like a 5 than a 7, poor touch did not keep hold of the ball and was always falling over. not like the old Torres who was not fazed by anything. haven’t seen Gerrard play that bad for a long time.
in my opinion selling Alonso has basically lost any hope of a league title.
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
we need a manager who keeps things simple rafa is too complicated the players dont understand a thing he is on about probz!! its this zone marking thing that we use at defending free kicks and corners all of are players are static and wait for the ball to come to them instead of attacking it thats y we concede goals!!
isaac hunt - August 25th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
we just didnt look anywhere near to how well was playing last year. even in the 0-0 draws we seemed to attack with a lot more purpose. i think we are seeing how important alonso was and that rafa should have made a creative defensive midfielder his top target. i think when aquilani and agger get fit we will see a new system and team. we cant afford to have players such as voronin and lucas playing or coming on to try and change a game. they are not good enough. get rid of them now!!!!
Donavan Ried - August 25th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
David Fairclough Supersub …… Sorry mate but we must have been watching two different games ….. Just how many times did Benayoun pass the ball behind Torres,Kuyt and Gerrard when they was breaking into the box ?…….I lost count at seven( and that was in the first 25 minutes ….. All who knows me here knows that i am not a fan of Lucas, But I refuse to blame him for (1) The freekick and (2) the attempted clearance with his head that resulted in the goal …… And at leasted he tried to make amends and play quite well after ……
And how can you blame Pepe Reina for the second when Torres was the one who let Curtis Davis step in front of him and only made a half hearted attemp to challenge for the ball ……
The subs ….. Well … Lucas for Voronin,Benayoun for Babel??? …….. Surely the first to be subed should have been Mascherano (Not that he did anything wrong, but i see little point in playing a defencive midfielf player if your chasing the game) and Albert Riera or even Andrea Dossena brought on to play down the left …… (We have seen this before with Rafa, and Crouch ….. Rafa buying Both Pennant and Gonzalez to cross balls in for Crouch from both side and only ever playing the two together in a handful of games) ……
Playing Benayoun and then replacing him with Babel meant that we played with little to no width which meant balls played through a congested middle was like trying to tread a needle and as a result Torres,Gerrard and Kuyt always had two to three men on them ….
Rafa needs to start learning from his mistake or LFC will never be more than a brides maid with him in charge
Dom - August 25th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Rafa need to fucking get a reality check. What he needs to do is drop gerrard back into midfield and play babel and torres upfront.
Dom - August 25th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Yeah Benayoun was poor for me. Lucas was unlucky, cant blame him at all.
In my opinion, this was Rafa’s fault, 100% Why wasnt reira playing? Benni is good, but hes an impact player, not a starter.
I will have my player ratigns on my blog in a bit. Will let you know when its up.
isaac hunt - August 25th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
we were very unlucky and deserved to win still. but it was players like lucas, voronin and babel who just dont fight for the shirt that annoys me. ok kuyt is not the best technically but he will always give 100%. you can see the players that it hurts to lose – reina, carragher, skrtel, mascherano, alonso(last year), gerrard, even though he dosnt show it you can tell that torres also loves liverpool as much as we do. rafa needs to get players in that are either world class or will fight for liverpool and are not happy to sit on the bench and pick up their 50,000 a week.
Cant Remember - August 25th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
I do not think Rafa’s formation works any more without Alonso. Time to go 442 i think.
Reina
Johnson Carragher Skirtel Dossena
Benayoun Gerrard Mascherano Reira
Kuyt Torres
People may laugh at Dossena but i think he is a better attacking option than insua especially at home when teams park the bus
isaac hunt - August 25th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
is anyone getting sick of having two defensive midfielders. its a good formation away but if we played two attacking midfielders at home im sure we would rip teams apart.
isaac hunt - August 25th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
when all players are fit my team would look like this for teams who come to defend:
—————-reina
johnson agger skrtel insua
———-mascherano
—–gerrard——–aquilani
kuyt————————–reira
—————torres
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 12:34 pm
The post-mortem doesnt need to be long.
We scored two own goals last night which meant a merely competent Villa performance got a headline grabbnig 1-3 scoreline.
If Lucas doesnt make that horrendous mistake the game would have been so different. Hopefully that will be the last game he starts for us. I think many would agree that we’d rather see someone like Dossena play out of position than Lucas The Liability. HIS MISTAKES COST US GAMES!
The Gerrard tackle was almost as stupid, virtually an own goal itself.
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 12:42 pm
I am now convinced that the 2 american owners MUST OUT!!!
As the true fans of our beloved club, we MUST START TO ACT! We MUST COORDINATE EACH OTHER TO BOYCOTT, DEMONSTRATE TO THE 2 AMERICAN OWNERS THAT THEY ARE NOT WANTED AT ANFIELD!!!
Please UNITE TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 12:43 pm
i fink liverpools latest poor results are a clear reflection of how good a player xabi alonso is
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Worrying thing is for you guys is that if you don’t (and I’m not saying you won’t) get champs league next season you are in REAL trouble. Your debts are geared against champs league income and if you don’t qualify I guarantee Gerrard and or torres will have to be sold to pay your yearly debts then it would be a downward spiral!
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Voronin came in as a sub and set up the only goal. He almost set up a second goal if Carragher had stayed onside. His first touch was lacking, but any sub who sets up a goal gets a pass when it comes to post-game finger pointing. Lucas was crap, but the Stoke game did show he has potential. Not ready to send him packing yet. Babel needs to get off the wing and be paired with Torres up top when we are playing from behind.
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Lucas, Voronin and Macherano out, VDV, Flamini and Siva in. However this wont happen because the Yanks are not concerned about success for the club, they just want money.
liverpoodlian - August 25th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
why masch must out??masch is >>>>>>better than flamini..that’s all..
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 1:11 pm
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha all you pretend scousers got exactly what you deserved last night……nothing. It was delightful seeing that pleasant chap Carragher nearly bursting a blood vessel and gobbing over his own disgusting shirt when he realised there was no way back!!
Villa’s 3 goals were pure footballing poetry:
GOAL 1: a lovely header by Lucas from a pinpoint A. Young delivery right in front of one of those self-righteous banners in the ‘citadel’ that is the Kop
GOAL 2: a lovely header (from a Villa player this time) converted from a pinpoint Shorey corner. Granted the award of the corner was dubious, as the Kop squealed that the 5 yard deflection must have come off a discarded giro book thrown onto the pitch in a bitchy tirade at the wonderful Lucas (their views obviously blocked by some silly flags and banners). Anyway, thanks go to Reina for giving himself a hernia and kicking the ball away, thus allowing the ref to add on 30 secs and England full-back Shorey to pick out the solid Davies.
GOAL 3: that destroyer of Villa and George Boateng’s right leg, Ste Gerrard Gerrard, gives away a pen. The Kop all scream penalty at once, immediately confused that a ref has given a pen to the opposition. The realisation dawns that the pen is for Villa and one Kopite realises he threw his giro book on the pitch just before Villa’s second goal. Anyway, justified pen converted. Game over. Norwegians, Irish, Thais and sotherners all depart Anfield only for the southerners to clog the M6 home for all the returning Brummies.
……………if only it was a Saturday!! Lawereson and Hansen would have been so humble in defeat and praiseworthy of AVFC.
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Calvo…
Having watched the game its clear that u guys are missing Xabi perhaps as much if not more than Utd miss Ronaldo.
Because at no point in the game was there any cohesion between the midfield and strikers.
Blame whoever you want but the fact remains that had Rafa shown more resepect to Xabi instead of flirting with Barry perhaps Xabi would have still been there!
You can spout about having “the best midfielder in the world” which is debatable and having Torres but the “brains” of your team was Xabi!
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
THE CHOSEN ONE
Ok guys lets get one thing straight. the problem in last nights game is nothing to do with new signings. the team on that fiield should of beat villa convinsingly.
We didnt take out chances, full stop. if we would of scored that goal that everyone kicked but was saved by the goalie. We would of won the match but we didn`t.
We did`t play as a unit and we were second to the 2nd ball and thats what I found the most worrying because our game is built on being first to the ball and controlling the temple.
We were crap………..the title is by far no means over but we as a team need to step up a gear or two. Its a team game and i`m not pointing fingers no one shone.
If we become 9 points adrift then its over and now we have to beat most of the big teams .
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
Great display from Villa, this really sums up the scouse supporters…… the crap I had to listen to when Tevez and Ronaldo left and we signed Owen from liverpool supporters about how United had messed up and would win F**k all. I know looking at the top 22 players in United team liverpool have not a hope of keeping level with us or the other top 2 teams. Plus Fergie can go out and spend 40million when ever he wants to…….. as always we have the money…..you have jack!!!! bit like your trophy cabinet for the past 19yrs…….
Jed - August 25th, 2009 at 1:56 pm
my analysis is that liverpool are fucking shit!!!!!!
all i can say is told u so ladies!!! hahahahahahahaha
get rid of rafa and you may be a chance….but the best thing you could hope for is for an arab consortium to bags full of cash to come knocking at your door…your owners dont care..its a business to them…you can say what you like about abramovich but its not a business to him, its a hobby…he is passionate about it….liverpool will be in even deeper shit if you dont make the top four this year and miss the Champions League…there will be even less money and liverpool WILL BE the next Leeds…I hope this doesnt happen because i like telling you all how shit your team is and i won’t really care too much if they are plying their trade in the championship
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
Dirk kuyt is shit, sure he gives good work rate, but he can’t take any1 on and can’t cross a road. We need a proper winger, as for voronin.(Who the fuck is andrei voronin) PIECE OF WANK
anonymous - August 25th, 2009 at 2:11 pm
Villa fan here. I am a bit shocked by the result last night and I must say very happy.
I really think you guys need to get rid of Rafa. Without question he cost you the league last year by resting Torres in key games against poor oposition and then dropping points. In this blog a lot of you blame the yanks for not supporting him in the transfer window but Rafa spend 40M on 2 player!
I like Johnson and he is probably worth 18m but was he the best use of the money. And I know we cant talk (Downing is injured) but 20m on an injury prone unproven in the premiership player that wont play for 2 months is NIUTS!!!! You could have had a ever reliably fit Garreth Barry for 12m (and he wanted to join Liverpool) and then 8m to spend on beefing up defense, I cant help but think hangeland would be perfect for L:iverpool.
Good luck for the season, you wont win the league with Rafa and IMO you will actually struggle for 4th (Man U and Chelski will be 1 & 2), Arsenal are looking good and then there is City, Spurs and maybe a threat from Villa & Everton.
Get rid of Rafa !

THE CHOSEN ONE August 25th, 2009 at 1:40 pm …. “We were crap………..the title is by far no means over but we as a team need to step up a gear or two. Its a team game and i`m not pointing fingers no one shone.” …..Unfortunately how very true, and whats more you could see the stress on Lucas’s face after the own goal, Rafa should never have sub’ him as it will dent his confidence more, plus it should have been Macsh’ as Lucas offers more in attack …. Poor management by Rafa …..Let’s hope that Rafa can learn from this ….
Calvo… “Because at no point in the game was there any cohesion between the midfield and strikers.
Blame whoever you want but the fact remains that had Rafa shown more resepect to Xabi instead of flirting with Barry perhaps Xabi would have still been there!” …….. Yes this is true, But would it not be the same is we have kept Alonso but he was Injuried? ….. I think that a big part of it last night was that we played with no width …… Benayoun drifted in to much as did Babel and made the centre of the pitch too congested denying Torres and Gerrard space and time to make runs ….. Because we played so narrrow Villa always had bodies there to block shots …. Riera would have given us that width ….
Now you (Man Utd) have had a taste of Bunrley what do you think now? …… Remember they Knock both Us and Chelsea out of the Cup so they have the form against the big clubs, and with Tottenham and Man City, the Premier League is far from over everyone has to be on their toes ….
well have to eat, will speak with you two again, if not the “anonymous” versions(Hee,Hee)

its all rafas fault he gets £30 million for Alonso and goes and buys a player who wont be fit til October what an idiot Madrid wanted Alonso that much he could have got Snidjer and van der vaart and £5 million for Alonso or just did a straight swap for the 2. i dont care what any saysrafa has had the money and the only good thing he did this season was buy Johnson.
Torres Played crap vs villa although he scored. He needs a challenge he knows even if he plays crap he will still play next game. Voronin is shocking cant justify even putting him in the squad even infront of Ngog at hes scored this season. Rafa has made some strange decsions so far this season he needs to wise up!!!!!!

I hope to fuck RAFA ..is reading these posts ..same as hicks…and Gillete..because you are all a disgrace…Rafa ,why didnt you offload Lucas and buy martinez..?why did you bother selling Arbeloa for a meesly 3 mill ,you cud of kept him at RB and used johnson as a right winger untill you got a quality winger..van der vaart for example..dont winge about the funds..you cud of sold Riera, babel, voronin, agger(good player, just injury prone ,therefore no use)you made no effort to purchase Barry this year ,and because you pursued him last year Alonso decided ..fuck you ..im off ,id say he is havin a good laff at you now ,you fool….you should of made sure you got barry …but no…you insist on playing kyut out of position ..and played voronin there instead ..you really dont have a clue..mascherano wanted out ..he doesnt look interested….and he is forever making fouls..you should of sold his ass…and signed marek hamsik..plus martinez..and aqualani …van der vaart or sniejder…plus a top qulity cb …skrtel is injury prone too,and Carragher isnt as good and getting older…still havent sorted out the left back..you should of offloaded dossena..and tried to bring in a quality LB…to be honest rafa ..you had enough time..Gerrard Houllier was sacked after 5 seasons..he won the treble and you won the champions league with his team ..and lost it with your own..you havent won the title nor do you look like ever winning it…why should you be given more time….you havent a clue mate ..you have made the team weaker this year ..all the talk off bringing in 3 or 4 top quality players and getn out the dead would…bullshit talk ..please go ..

Bring in jose the special one..he would love to be turning up at Anfield with the crowd behind him ..he wouldnt take any crap from underpreforming players..and he,d sign 3 or 4 top quality players..get rid of the bad apples as he says …and would motivate the players and get the best from them….mourinho is the man for the Liverpool job…even mourinho use to say RAFA hasnt a clue and his teams are negative and blow hot and cold…mourinho was right…bring him in..mourinho would clear out all the crappy players..Lucas,voronin,riera,agger and probably ,skrtel..they are injury prone ..agger is never fit for more than a couple of months…and mourinho would be able to attract top players simply becasue every where he goes..he wins ..and does it quickly ..mourinho would lov the Liverpool job..and would lov Anfiled on the champions league nights..bring in mourinho before Rafa blows are season…LIVERPOOL WONT WIN ANYTHING THIS YEAR AGAIN..3 SEASONS IN A ROW …GET RAFA AND THE YANKS OUT NOW…

This site is soooo gash. You all slate Rafa and you don’t know what the fuck you’re on about. Probably prepubesant eight years old on Footy Manager thinking it’s real. “Sell Lucas, buy Martinez!”… what a load of bollocks. You don’t know what you’re on about you fools. Rafa is a fine manager who has his hands tied, that’s it. Fooking idiots you lot.

I hate to say this but I think we may be seeing the beginning of the end of Rafa’s reign and any chance of the title for a long time. The only saving grace if things continue the way they are is that with no champion’s league next season the yanks will probably have to sell. Lets be honest here unless there are major improvements soon or big signings we will not finish in the top four this season.

why does rafa take so long to change the team when its not going our way, i think reira should have been brought on instead of lucas, who was not even as bad as gerrard but gerrard can change a game in a minute as we know but not the way he changed it last night, but even he can have a bad night on the other hand then on comes babel who is yet to have a good night he just aint good enough and as for voronin what can i say he should be playing with the ladies,
Nick... - August 25th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
lol babel aint good enough hes not playing in the right position thats why

that was a seriously bad Villa team. We have left at least two titles behind us since Rafa arrived and it is safe to say here goes another. We need a very quick change and even then we can only hope to hang in there till January to get new faces in.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Rafa is incompetent when it comes to the offensive side of the game. Why does he leave Riera on the bench? Gerrard needs to face the facts: he must play CM, and Rafa must have the guts to play him there. I don’t know what Rafa sees in Lucas. Last year he cost us at Wigan. Yeah, he is young, but he’s playing in a side that is trying to win the EPL title. He didn’t need to head the corner away, for there were no AV players challenging. Rafa could keep Kuyt on the right and bring in Riera for the left side. Then, he could play Benayoun behind Torres; he is more creative than Gerrard. One thing was clear last night: our bench is an embarrassment, and there is no way we can challenge for trophies without depth. If Rafa thinks Torres and Gerrard can play every game, then he needs to have his head examined. Torres gets manhandled and both he and Gerrard have physical issues. Babel has to go, if Rafa isn’t going to use him as a striker. He is absolutely lost on the wing. Finally, no matter how you slice it, the zonal marking is crap. Rafa places the blame on the players, but let’s face facts, they are lost. This has gone on too long; it’s way too risky. If we are playing a side that is good in the air and waits for that one chance while we show our lack of clinical play, we get burned. The players are responsible, but for some reason, they don’t read the situation well. When will Benitez learn. Yes, the players are paid big money to produce, but the manager is the one who sets the starting 11, brings on the subs, and determines the formation, and style of play. The onus is own Rafa Benitez. The Yanks and Rafa are to blame. Bring in Robben, VDV, and Tuncay.

MIKE says:
david fairclough supersub – what game did you watch?
OK Babel did have two long range efforts off target, but at least he was showing some belief in the last 15 minutes.
Insua gave a really strong performance, especially in the second half, delivered some dangerous cross when overlapping Yossi. (remember he is just 19!)
Yossi was average for him, nearly scored after 30 seconds, then didn’t look like threatening the goal again and was ineffective in the second half and deserved to be replaced.
Kuyt had a poor match, his touch was regularly wayward. Should have been subbed too.
Masch was our best player, constantly broke up attacks and won the ball back, his distribution, tho not up to the tempo we have become used to from alonso, ensured we kept possession and went forward.
Oh, and don’t slate Gerrard for one mis-timed tackle – he was trying to inject some energy into the crowd and his team. To give him 5 out of 10 is in your view the same contribution as Voronin – come on – stevie wasn’t at his best but was still more of a goal threat than all with the possible exception of torres.

i agree with the post apart from 2 of the player ratings, mascherano and johnson were our two best players by a mile. they and torres in patches were the only players willing the team on and trying to make things happen. but the players seemed defeated from the off, i didnt see any of the liverpool fighting spirit ive been accustomed to in rafas reign, does this signal the end for rafa? as he doesnt seem himself anymore and the players seemed to be lost and in their own thoughts, not focusing on the game

THE ONLY REASON WHY BENAYOUN HAD AN AVERAGE GAME COZ THE ONLY PLAYERS HE WAS TRYING TO LINK WITH WAS GERRARD AND TORRESS WHO WERE ALWAYS MARKED TIGHT COZ SIMPLY IF I WAS ON THAT PARK I WOULDNT DARE PASS THE BALL TO LUCAS COZ HE IS CHITE,I SERIOUSLY THINK RAFA HAS NO IDEA AS A MANAGER IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE IN EUROPE HE IS IN A CLASS OF HIS OWN BUT PREM NO,HE MAKES SO MANY MISTAKES SELLING ALONZO AND ARBELOA WERE HIS FIRST ,FAIR ENUFF THE YANKS DONT GIVE HIM MUCH MONEY BUT FCK ME HE KEEPS DONKS ON THE BOOKS AT THE CLUB WHO IF I WAS MANAGER OF HULL CITY I WOULDNT HAVE VORONIN FRIGGING CHIT ,IM SURE IF WE HAD THE LIKES OF KENNY AS MANAGER AND EVEN ROY EVANS IM SURE NEMETH WOULD OF HAD A RUN AND ,IM SURE IF ARSENE WENGER GOT HOLD OF BABEL HED TURN THE BOY INTO A SUPER STAR WHICH HE SURELY CAN BE IF HE IS PLAYED IN THE RIGHT POSITION,AND OTHER RAFA MISTAKE IS NOT PLAYING GERRARD IN MIDFIELD, HOW THE FCK CAN WE BE CREATIVE WHEN WE HAVE TO HOLDING MIDFIELDERS FOR WICH ONE CAN JUST NOT STEP UP,AGAINST VILLA TO ME IT WAS JUST NOT OUR DAY WE GOT HIT BY THE UNLUKKY STICK THEY ONLY REALLY SCORED ONE GOOD GOAL AND IF IT WASNT FOR FRIEDEL VILLA WOULD OF BEEN HAMMERED,ALL WE MISSED AND THAT WAS CLEAR TO SEE AT THE END OF LAST SEASON WAS WE DIDINT HAVE A NOTHER CLASS STRIKER,IF RAFA HAD GROWN SOME BALLS HE WOULD OF TRIED NEMETH ,HE PLAYED THE LAD IN THE PRE SEASON AND HE PERFORMED WELL MY QUESTION WHY BOTHER PLAYING HIM PRESEASON IF U WERENT GOING TO LET HIM STEP UP POINTLESS RAFA JUST POINTLESS ,WHATS THE POINT OF US BUYING ALL THIS YOUNG TALENT IF WE JUST LOAN THEM OUT AND NOT GIVE THEM A GO ,BEING REALISTIC I CANT SEE A BRIGHT FUTURE THE WAY THE THINGS ARE IF THEY STAY THE SAME , RAFA PULL URE HEAD IN MAN URE LOSING IT PLEASE READ WHAT WE SAY HERE COZ THE FANS WHO HAVE BEEN HERE FOR YEARS CAN CLEARLY SEE URE MISTAKES

Babel is not a bad player. he was baught to liverpool as a tallented young center forword, who destroyed Englands Euro U21 dreams. So liverpool play him as a left winger. where is the sence of that?
liverpool sold Alonso, 1 of the 2 best defensive mid players in football. why do we still play Steven Gerrard up front, yes he scores goals, and gets assist for torres, but is he a world class forward, pace and power two great qualities which Gerrard has, but we need more than that upfront.
ok, Gerrard in midfield in a 4-4-2 formation, drop Lucas, and groom him, (hes not ready yet). Play Babel or even Kuyt with Torres,
Reina
Johnson—-Carra—Skrtel—-Insua
Masch
Kuyt—-Gerrard—-Benayoun
Babel
Torres
