Spurs to Attempt to Sign £10m Chelsea Star Joe Cole: Why Not
by Christian Bailey on August 26th, 2009 11 commentsIs Harry playing it cool on the ‘Cole’ issue?
Recent quotes from Harry Redknapp in relation to the protracted speculation about a move for Chelsea man Joe Cole can be read in a number of ways, and perhaps that is just how Harry Redknapp would like it?
Here’s what the White Hart Lane boss was quoted as saying.
“Joe Cole is a fantastic player but he is at Chelsea and he is going to stay at Chelsea. There is nothing in that whatsoever.
“Any team would like Joe but he is not a player I have even made a phone call about because I don’t think it would be possible to get him. He belongs to Chelsea.”
Now clearly this suggests that he would like to be reunited with the player he brought to prominence at West Ham and he is simply stating that he thinks that the west London club is not considering selling the adaptable attacker, however surely the player himself may well be considering leaving the club.
After a prolonged period out with injury the 27 year old will find it very hard indeed to break back into the side, a winning side, and with a World Cup on the horizon he may well have considered his future could lie elsewhere, so why not Tottenham?
Cole has been out for over seven months now and in that time Guus Hiddink, and then Carlo Ancelotti, have managed just fine without him and it seems a very real possibility that when he does finally return from his knee injury, he will not get his first team place back so easily. Clearly he would have no qualms about moving to an arch rival as that was what he did when he left Upton Park to move to Stamford Bridge in 2003, a move he clearly didn’t seek (unlike a certain Frank Lampard).
Would Tottenham fans have any issue with such a capture? I doubt it. The England man is of sufficient quality to transgress issues of allegiance. Such a move could see him be a useful addition on either flank depending on how best to play the outstanding Lennon and Modric.

I agree. Joe Cole is certainly within Spurs reach. Harry has taken the club such a long way in the last year and the Chelsea man knows he will struggle to resurrect his Chelsea career.

I think he’ll be a real decent signing for Spurs too – a little extra creativity to feed Dafoe’s incredible strike rate. If they do get him, I guess Harry’s biggest concern is who’s Cole going to replace in the starting eleven with Modric and Lennon on form.

If they get him then Modric will play in the middle where he prefers and Cole on the left. Hudd will go to the bench. If they get another defensive mid-fielder (the Brazilian) then Hudd RIDES THE PINE again!! What ever happens it’s Hudd who makes way!

He needs to repay a team that have waited seven months for him to recover and help the team with the best he can do, for him to leave now would be an insult. His a decent player who does what he does with heart so i personally wouldnt want to see him leave, but like any player he needs to fight for his place.

Absolute cack! He made a statement not long ago saying he had no intention of leaving Chelsea. Certainly not to drop down to the level of Spurs.

It would be simple, Huddleston out, Modric in the middle, Cole on the left. No worries. Hurry up Joe, less than a week left.

Funny Joe Cole was quoted recently as saying “The best job in the world is playing for Chelsea, the second best job in the world is being injured at Chelsea”.
What chance do you really think Sp*rs have of signing a player so obviously commited to Chelsea.
He knows he’s always had to fight for a place, why should this year be any different.
He’s the perfect player to play at the tip of the diamond, allowing Lampard more space to come from deeper….

You write: “Clearly he would have no qualms about moving to an arch rival as that was what he did when he left Upton Park to move to Stamford Bridge in 2003″.
Trouble is, Cole is a childhood Chelsea fan, so it wasn’t a move to a rival club, but a homecoming. The idea of Cole moving to Spuds is comedy gold, that even a comedian like Redknapp wouldn’t attempt for fear of being laughed out of football (again). Simply an impossibility.

Strange that Cole was a Chelsea ballboy long before he’d even heard of Wet Spam or the Arsefool
