Spurs Boss Redknapp Calls for West Ham & Millwall to Be Banned
by Mad Dog and Glory on August 27th, 2009 13 commentsSurely this is not the answer?

Harry Redknapp says West Ham and Millwall should never be allowed to play each other in a cup tie again following the crowd trouble at their game and the riots around Upton Park on Tuesday.
The Tottenham and former Hammers boss believes the clubs should be re-drawn if they are paired in future.
“When the two names were drawn together it was just asking for trouble and that is exactly what we got because of the history between them,” he said.
Redknapp accepts a League game would have to go ahead but added in The Sun: “That match should be played behind closed doors because the human cost of these kind of disturbances is just too high to bear.”
The FA have launched an investigation into the violence surrounding the Carling Cup tie. (Evening Standard)
Not sure how you can stop two teams from drawing against each other in a competition, surely the emphasis should be on the two clubs trying their hardest to control that tiny minority of thugs they posses.
The idea to play such games behind close doors only serves to punish the true fans whereas the mindless hooligans will simply attack each other on the nearby streets anyway. There is a danger of all this media attention over egging the pudding. Yes the scenes were deplorable but what can be done to stop two sets of idiotic morons wanting bash themselves senseless?

I agree, its unfair to play games behind closed doors its only the thugs who win if you do that.

Sadly, I agree in a way because if they ever do get drawn together again this exact same thing will happen.

behind closed doors or ban away fans

Throw west ham out of both cups and millwall out of FA cup for this season…that’s as good a deterrent you will find. Either club re-offend, they get thrown out for a further 3 seasons from cups…too big a price to pay…fans will behave and clubs will do everything possible to sort out the offenders!

If you don’t like to say it Mr Redknap then don’t say it.
What occured was a disgrace and should be punished accordingly but no more kneejerk reactions / comments please from people who should know better.
Has anyone stopped and looked back at the last meetings of these two clubs?? Was there any trouble of this nature the last time they met? And the time before? Something must have gone right eh?
You can suggest playing all the games you like behind closed doors Mr Redknap but how exactly is that going to prevent a thousand idiots turning up outside the stadium looking to kill one another.
Get a grip.

How would you feel as a supporter if you were drawn against either West ham or Millwall and lost the game if you had only been playing against either side because they had already been drawn together but got put back in the bag?
what would happen if they were the last 2 balls out of the bag? Re pick the whole lot. Harry you really should have thought this through before opening that big gob of yours. This was not about football or football fans, this was about thugs outside the ground and I am convinced that if the tension had not been so great outside the ground things would not have spilled over into it. Also going on previous eencounters such as this or other higher profile clashes they are usually played on a sunday early to stop idiots getting tanked up before the game? why was this not done for this game? Morons drinking all day and plotting a mass brawl makes me really proud to be English. I really thought we were beyond this with our preventative measures and policing. Watch any game in Italy and every week there are firecrackers and flares going off in the crowd and fights but nothing is done about that, just wait till UEFA get involved now. Oh joy

Replying to anonoymous about throw both clubs out of the cups and re offending has a 3 year ban. do you really think those that did that were fans or would even care? If you cared about your club you wouldn’t do it in the first place.
From stepping over that line onto the pitch you know the club are in for a hammering and yes they may all be on there as the idiot in the picture is with their WEST HAM tattoos but having a club tattooed on your leg doesn’t make you a fan. Oh they would probably get a bit upset that their weekend off of football while the cup games are being played is a bit of a drag their missus might drag them to lakeside but doubt they would give it much more thought than that. Where as the real supporters who are ashamed to be associated with the likes of them and those involved in the club would be the only victims, well that and the cup competition itself. Millwall were on the verge of knocking out a premier league team and were playing some great football, thats what cups are all about not mindless morons ruining it for the majority.

Maybe simply restrict the attendees to Season Ticket Holders – with a police cordon around, say, 1/2 mile of the ground?
Maybe behind closed doors?
Maybe, Maybe, Maybe…whatever you do, those who use football as an excuse for violence will still find a way to meet their respective counterparts.
Personally, as a West Ham season ticket holder, i would like to see an appropriate fine for failure to control fans inside the satdium, with the club taking a dramatic step by applying a lifetime ban on anyone who’s ticket was used by someone identified as having run on the pitch or having clashed with stewards inside – whether they were the culprit or not – after all, CCTV from the start of the game should identify where people were originally located.

EXACTLY. fucking south melbourne (greeks) and preston (macedonians) have such a problem with eachother that only members are allowed to attend the match. this is exactly the solution. tough titties if they take a loss on gate fees, the town and society in general suffers if this precaution isnt taken. i hate giving into wankers and thugs, but what can you do to prevent the trouble.

I’m surprised by Redknapp, if you redraw the tie you’re basically caving in and saying hooliganism beats the strength of game and the powers that control it.
In the fairness of sport, and to make a stand to this kind of thing you need to stand up against it. Redrawing ties is like letting a bully get away with their behaviour.
Redknapp is taking the wrong line here.

PLAY behind closed gates is the awnser the violence isnt going to stop its going to get worse if they do nothing about it. only members and parents etc. will be able to watch the game. If they do fight outside the staduim, they will have to make sure that there has to be a fair amount of cops.
