Reality check people. We have only played 270 minutes of the season!
Few new additions have been brought into Rafa Benitez’s squad to help build on last season’s impressive campaign, but Purslow insists Reds supporters should not expect further fresh faces to be acquired by the time the transfer window closes on Tuesday.
“I wouldn’t bank on it,” he said. (Sky Sports)
The news that we may indeed not be investing any money in any more new additions is not much of a shock but is it news that should make Liverpool fans grumpy and suicidal? Probably not. Yes the club is probably a bit weak in some areas but if we are lucky with injuries with our core players then we can still hope to challenge for major honours so all is not doom and gloom.
Yes another striker would be helpful, I feel at the back we are covered for most eventualities. Yes we are in trouble if Kyrgiakos, Skrtel, Carragher and Agger all go for the same ball in training, but that is thankfully unlikely. Yes it would have been good to get a ‘marquee’ signing but it’s not the end of the world.
The most important thing is that the team performs to the best of it’s abilities, something they woefully failed to do against Aston Villa. But on another day Gerrard would have put away the early chance and the result could have been entirely different. Football is a fickle game and the luck just wasn’t with us for that encounter. However in many ways that display was far more welcoming than the opening day defeat to Tottenham where we lacked ideas and deserved to lose.
If this was Fantasy Football I would reel off half a dozen players I would like us to have brought in this summer. And yes it does seem that Hicks and Gillett haven’t been able to give Rafa a fair chunk of change to invest in the side, but it is far too early to panic. It’s still August for gods sake! I fully expect/hope that we will be challenging by January and if we are not then maybe we can look for people to blame.
I am no fan of cliches but I fear that I must use on on this occasion. The Premier League season is a marathon and not a sprint and whilst we may have been slow out of the blocks we are still very much in with a shot of achieving success!
