A turning point?
We can argue all day and night about our inability to keep a tight defensive line against big imposing set piece specialists, we can discuss the fact that beating Bolton shouldn’t be such a tall order until the cows come home but I would rather take great delight in the fighting spirit shown by the lads as they battled to keep their season moving in the right direction.
Again we had more than enough chances to win this fixture three times but this time we kept knocking at the door and were finally allowed in. Some have rightfully drawn parallels with the Man City game from last term where we came back from the dead and a result the inspired a run that saw us lose just once in the following 19 Premier League fixtures, one can only hope that a similar run of performances follows our extreme effort at the Reebok.
Yes its just three points but it could mean so much more. If we had failed to win, or god forbid lose, the game who knows what would have happened next. It could have been three defeats from four matches something that few title chasers ever experience, but because everyone in the line up gave their all this is not the case and we can hopefully move on from here and push on with our season.
Again I was ultra impressed with Glen Johnson, pushing on almost as an occasional second right winger, proving to be well worth the slightly steep fee. Wasn’t too impressed with the Lucas waving the imaginary card and he wasn’t that great but not sure what we can do about his position. Plessis could be brought in but then we could appear to brittle in the midfield.
Torres and Gerrard showed great character and leadership today and they battled all the way. Kuyt gave his usual determined performance and I have to say I would still much rather see Benayoun playing and not Riera. The Israeli makes things happen, and thats a priceless commodity. Kyrgiakos came up against one of the Premier League’s toughest attackers in Kevin Davies so was always going to have problems but I think he could become a very handy player during what will hopefully be a long and hard season.
I was proud of the recovery and it gave me much hope for the season and helped vanquish the memory of White Hart Lane and the Villa game.
