Liverpool Full Back Dossena Heading for Roma Move: I Thought He Was Staying?
by YNWA on August 31st, 2009 235 words | 59 commentsShould he stay or should he go?
Reports emerging over the past 48 hours suggest that Roma’s John Arne Riise could be on his way to Germany, to join Bayern Munich.
With this in mind, the Giallorossi have been on the lookout for a direct replacement for the Norwegian, and they seem to have found one in the form of Andrea Dossena from Liverpool.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 27-year-old Reds defender is keen on a return to Serie A, as he feels it will enhance his chances of earning a place in Marcello Lippi’s Italy squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. (Goal.com)
Some reports over these past 24 hours have well and truly contradicted each other. Andrea Dossena is apparently set to stay at Anfield according to his agent but even Rafa himself has stated that the club may well still be looking to offload players before the deadline passes.
Thus far this season the Italian has managed just one minute in a Liverpool shirt as he looks on in Emiliano Insua’s direction as the Argentine continues to occupy the left back spot. Perhaps Dossena is more suited to an advanced role or maybe we would do well to simply sell him at the earliest opportunity.
With Aurelio still out injured a sale would be unwise but by January a move might become a whole lot more likely.

keep him we more players not less
Bruce - August 31st, 2009 at 12:08 pm
Whilst he isn’t the best player in the world, we can’t afford to sell him right now, best to wait until January
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 12:13 pm
dossena to roma and baptista to liverpool!!!
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 12:16 pm
i agree he does have positives to his game he’s good going forward like against united when he was played on the wing i thought he looked good if were gonna get rid of anyone id get rid of voronin and babel and get van der vart and zaki
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 12:19 pm
plus what is the point of selling as these bloody yanks won’t give us the money to buy players, so the money from any sales will only line thier pockets.
Plus insua is too slow and makes too many mistakes for my liking we are better of with aurelio he is a good player and dossena as the backup get rid of insua.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 12:21 pm
Get rid of Insua? What planet are you on? He’s the best youngster we’ve had in ages, the first of Rafa’s bought in youth programme to really come good. He’s not slow either. Jesus, do you even watch any games?
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 12:22 pm
swap deal!!! dossena and 3m for baptista then like me dad says, out with the bad and in with the good lol lets hope it happens
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 12:23 pm
do you think they’d go for a straight swap with baptista? would be good cover for torres and can play gerrard role but would leave us very thin at lb with fabio been so injury prone
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 12:24 pm
If the money from selling him can be used to get Van Der Vaart on loan (with a buying intention in tow) I’m all for it! Cause when we get the fullbacks back from injuries we are covered in that regard (a couple of them should suit fine – Agger perhaps, as his offensive is quite good), as well as Aurelio is soon to be free from his injury and Johnson as a backup (Degen on the right) we should be well covred on our left back side
Kop King - August 31st, 2009 at 12:24 pm
Can someone please tell me why it is exactly that we sold john arne riise.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Because he’s a one-footed hoofer and hadn’t had a decent season in about 3 years? To be fair, he’s done well with Roma – but sometimes a player just needs a change. Shit happens. Insua/Aurelio are more than worthy replacements.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Continued; I would have to say that Insua has done a pretty good job too, so it’s no wonder Dossena is out in the cold. I suspect it will be harder for Aurelio to get back in the starting lineup as well, and Insua is our man for the future in that position. IMO he puts on a higher overall performance than Aurelio too, even if he lacks the Brazillians brilliance and finesse at times
Mr. Chopper - August 31st, 2009 at 12:31 pm
Because Arbeloa told him to (LOLOLOLOL). I don’t understand why we get rid of players that do a good job for us like Riise, Finnan and Arbeloa… But you just don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. Riise was way past his best when he was got rid of, like Sissoko. I nearly cried when we got rid of Momo, but then I looked back and saw his form was dire for a long time.
I doubt that Dossena will move today. Deadline day is full of shit, man. And we will definitely not end up with Babtista. Maybe Batista, if he’s free.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 12:32 pm
Definately Keep Babel and play him up front with Torres and take out Lucas for a while.
Dossena’s agent said he is staying this season. This is pure crap!!!
But we could put him on loan to Roma with Baptista going the other way (on loan)!!!
vince in oz - August 31st, 2009 at 12:34 pm
if we get baptista as a part of the deal..take it

THIS ISN’T CHAMPIONSHIP MANAGER.

I cant wait for the transfer window to close tomorrow. It’ll spell an end to the continuous speculation of fantasy players (teams) that will solve our problems. We can now move forward and talk about about the squad we have and how best to improve some of the lesser lights in the team. Hopefully, they’ll come good and we’ll be on our way to a crackin season.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 1:03 pm
Amen!
saif - August 31st, 2009 at 1:15 pm
he isn’t going check bbc sports gosip column eny way i think that either the owners are fucking dick heads or rafa’s going to do a lot of buisness tomorow i’d prefeer the latter if it is i hope we get vdv and baptista at the least and why dosn’t rafa get any one on free transfer
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 1:23 pm
i’d be happy if he managed just a little buisness any of the following or a combination of preferably vdv, baptista, zaki but i doubt we’ll get any but i do still think the leagues anyones this year
footybanter.co.uk - August 31st, 2009 at 1:29 pm
I’m with the consensus. Dossena ain’t great, but with the depth of the squad as is, Liverpool can’t afford to lose him.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 1:36 pm
Why the love for Zaki? 5 game wonder, shocking attitude. Also, Baptista? Donkey! VDV would be a good shout, sad to see Schneider and Robben both left for relative peanuts – would have been nice to have seen some kind of Xabi swap deal for a combo of Robben plus VDV/Schneider.
Even though Robben is a massive twat.

Already been denied by the player’s agent:
Andrea Dossena’s agent claims his client is unlikely to leave Liverpool during the transfer window.
The Italy international has been the subject of much speculation this summer, with a return to Serie A widely touted.
The full-back only moved to Anfield from Udinese last year, but has struggled to make an impact in England.
That has helped to fuel exit rumours, with Juventus and Napoli both believed to be keen on offering him a route back to his homeland.
However, the Italian transfer window is set to close on Monday and Dossena’s representative believes there is little chance of a deal being struck.
“I am about to arrive in Milan,” said Roberto La Florio to calciomercato.it.
“I know nothing regarding those rumours (Juve and Napoli).
Too late
“I have read those stories myself it’s only rumours.
“I don’t think he will return to Italy, it’s difficult for an agreement to be reached today.
“I really think it’s too late.”

THE CHOSEN ONE
kuyte will do us a job up front if torress is he will deliver. Trust him
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 1:55 pm
Not sure that means anything tbh, since when do agents speak the truth?
If, as is suspected, the owner’s aren’t giving Rafa a pot to piss in we should keep Doss – he might be a dodgy left back but he’s a suprisingly decent left mid. Plus, I’m guessing he’s gonna be matey with Aquilani.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 1:56 pm
juve will never get an average player, to think they will get a shit player like dossena is ridiculous. anyway would be very good for liverpool even if they don’t buy anyone else, however i would try to get real madrid’s royston drenthe or valencia’s ever banega. would offer riera lucas and cash and try to get both.
Michael - August 31st, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Well looks like Van Der Vaart will not be coming in either:
Dutch midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has been told he still has a future at Real Madrid.
The Spanish giants needed to cut their squad after their lavish summer spending spree, which brought in the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Xavi Alonso.
Van der Vaart was told he could leave the club and not only had to train away from the first-team squad but was not even given a squad number for this season.
But the departure of fellow Dutchmen Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder last week for Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, respectively, has handed Van der Vaart a reprieve.
Meeting:
The 26-year-old and his lawyer, Robert Geerlings, recently met with Real coach Manuel Pellegrini, technical director Jorge Valdano and general director Jose Angel Sanchez.
And having already turned down a move to Turkish champions Besiktas this summer, Geerlings admitted it was unexpected to hear Van der Vaart was still wanted at the Bernabeu.
“At the meeting Rafael was urgently requested to stay at Real,” he told weekly football magazine Voetbal International.
“The squad has been decreased to 25 players and that made them decide that Rafael doesn’t have to leave anymore.
“For us, it was very surprising, and Rafael has decided to fight for his place in Madrid.”
Geerlings also claimed that two English clubs made offers for Van der Vaart but he now insists: “It’s official, Rafael will stay at Real Madrid.”

Let’s all just face the facts guys, the Yanks are Milking us dry and we will yet again finish the season trophyless and all blame poor old RAFA
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Fantasy football transfers again. And since when are Juve so good? And why is Dossena shit? Idiot.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 2:28 pm
the reason i like zaki is he’ll score goal unlike most our back up for torres he’s got experience in prem and we could swap babel for him. he’s 6′1″ built like a tank good in the air and got an eye for goal and would be good foil for torres and at a team which created far less oppotunities than us got 10goals in 29 games in the prem. not too bad an option id say
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 2:39 pm
He scored them all in a glut at the beginning of the season though! Then went AWOL for half the rest of the season! Did you see what Bruce had to say about him? Sounds like a bloody management nightmare to me, hardly worth it as a backup player. Heskey also has all the qualities you describe. And Kevin Davies (who’s actually underrated). So has Titus Bramble, you can’t say that lad doesn’t know where the goal is (pity it’s his own).So have half the strikers I play alongside in my pub team. Do you want to see them at Anfield?
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 3:25 pm
i’m no idiot but maybe you are if you think that dossena is a good player. even napoli did not want him. regarding juve, just look at the two major signings they’ve done melo and diego. great players and have done an immediate upgrade to the team, surely much more than aquilani’s 20 million transfer. transfers have nothing to do with the team, a good transfer means that an improvement is seen immediately.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Bet you weren’t complaining when we first signed Italy’s former first choice left back though eh? Plus, Napoli, Roma and even the mighty Juve were all in for him before he signed for us – are their managers idiots? The reason we found it hard to shift Doss in this transfer window looks to be, unfortunately, down to his rather large wages. Juve have defo signed well this window – Diego is particular is a corking player. Maybe Aquilani will turn out to be even better? And I see you didn’t mention Johnson, he’s having a pretty decent start to the season no? Sometimes players start on fire; sometimes they take a while to bed in. Knee-jerk reactions don’t help.

babel to join ajax on season long loan
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 4:07 pm
Bring back Luis Garcia and put kuyt upfront with torres
Kop King - August 31st, 2009 at 4:15 pm
kuyts lack of pace out on the right is allmost as frustrating as seeing lucas in the middle.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Yeah, Kuyt’s crap. How many goals was it last season? And vital ones at that? How many assists? Still, he’s got crap hair,a fat arse and he’s slow so lets swap him for Quaresma. He was amazing for Barca, Porto, Inter and Chelsea.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 4:50 pm
how can anyone call kuyt crap fair enough he’s not the fastest but he’s vital to us. and then you say to get garcia he’s 31 and gone well down hill why dont we get zenden again instead!!. kuyts a solid all round player with a better attitude than even gerrard who moaned like a bitch after spending time on the right although he now realises it was for the good of the team.kuyt gets on with what ever task is asked of him and does it well im not saying he’s the best winger in the world but he’s one of the best in the league if your going on goals and assist.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 5:33 pm
just read portsmouth have put a 3mil bid in for zaki at least someones been listening to me 3mil is a absolute bargain bad attitude or not
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 5:48 pm
No it’s not. They are the worst club in the PL in terms of striking options and are bleeding desperate! Only 2m more would have bought Tuncay, who *would* have been a good signing.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Also, wasn’t Stevie Bruce quoted 15m plus for Zaki when he was going through his 5 minute hot streak and the MOTD pundits all thought he was the second coming of Christ? lol. Funnily enough, do you remember Lawro raving about Voronin after his first 5 games for Pool? How quickly they jerk those knees.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 6:10 pm
were not that hot on strikers either are you telling me you’d rather see n’gog up front when torres gets injured, tuncay would have been better option but he’s not availible now so you’ve got to look at who is and with fu#k all money that leaves us a bit limited, so you can have a player for 3mil with prem experience and can find the net and support torres in those games when he gets kicked about or you can keep dreaming about player who arent availible or we cant afford. i’d go with zaki personally.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 6:17 pm
N’gog? Yep I would. He’s got almost as much ‘Prem experience’ as Zaki. Don’t forget we’ve also got Dirk to come in and play up top should we need it – he’s a goalscoring beast these days. (He scored one less than Rooney last season from the sodding wing). And why are we all going mental anyways? Do the Mancs spend all day bricking it about who to play up top if Wazza gets crocked? Nando ain’t injured FFS!!
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 6:36 pm
i rate kuyt but then you’ve got to find someone to play the wing, if we’d not sold arbeloa we could have pushed johnson up or put gerrard out wide, but we need him back in the middle at the minute till aquilani is fit, so who ever we get we need some form of cover either striker or winger, torres might not be injured yet but it will happen unfortunately and n’gog really isnt ready yet, he hasnt got 10 goals in 29 games experience or the physical presence of zaki ok he’s not exactly prolific but who else could we afford. there is far better options than both out there but non we can afford
Reds Lewis - August 31st, 2009 at 6:55 pm
Dont think we’d suffer too much if we sold him….aurelio will be back soon and Insua is doing a very good job there.
If we sell him then the money should be spent on a position that is very thin on the ground e.g STRIKER
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 7:02 pm
Exactly, none we can afford. If Dirk moves up Yossi is the obvious choice to fit in temporarily at RW, perhaps even Babel (*cough*, if we’re desperate). But I’m sure N’Gog would do well there. We always go on about Rafa not giving youth a chance, then whinge when he doesn’t go for players like Zaki! It’s a shame Arby isn’t still aorund as Glenn looks like a bona fide right winger at times, but then Rafa hardly had a choice in the matter as Arby has been pushing to return home for ages – and once Real came it that was the end of it.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 7:07 pm
i suport liverpool simply we wil not sell or buy any one this window just please be quiet these fake roumours make me feel worser its all a dream were jus going to have to cope with what we have ynwa
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 7:13 pm
theres a time and a place for youth its called the carling/fa cup we want a prem title it was meant to be our year but the yank fuct it for us zaki would be ideal price and ability wise
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 7:16 pm
What about all the ‘give youth a chance’ shouts? What about ‘Rafa never plays youngsters like Arsene Wenger’. Make your minds up!! N’gog isn’t backup for Torres – Kirk would move up if Nando was out long term.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 7:17 pm
glen johnson wonderfull player i was more than happy we’ve signed him and was 100/100 sure he would be great with liverpool.
but one good decent player out of every five is surely not enough.
also remember the last player produced from the academy was steven gerrard ten years ago.
juve roma napoli are their managers still the same this year ? so maybe yes they where idiots.
i don’t like italian football style so i will never be happy to sign an italian player especially if they are shit players like aquilani and dossena.
large wages ? another reason why he should be kicked out as soon as possibile.
also can you say who is responsabile for these transfers, it seems no one is ?

anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 8:56 pm
Nah I meant Kirk. Our new signing Kirk from Corrie.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 9:18 pm
Kop King. I can’t be bothered listing all of Rafa’s signings but his success rate relative to their value is very high. And those who have ‘failed’ have mostly been shipped out for more money than was paid a la Momo, Crouch and Bellamy. Check out Rafa’s net transfer spend since he’s been here and it’s 70m – not exactly massive change when you look at our rivals.
The academy has been changed – by Rafa – because it hasn’t born fruit. He’s working hard with Kenny Danglkish to turn things around. Also, he’s bought lots of young (mostly foregin as they’re cheaper) talent. That talent is starting to come through with Insua, N’Gog, Nemeth, Ince, Amoo, Bruna, LDV, Darby etc. It takes time though, no instant fixes or hugely inflated youth buys like Wenger is able to make.
Lots of clubs were still interested in Doss over the window – it didn’t work out, so what. Sometimes deals just don’t come off. Doesn’t mean he’s a crap player, and he’ll certainly get minutes at Anfield. as it happens, I thought he looked decent at the back end of last season on the left wing.
Responsible for tranfers? In the past, maybe it was unclear (Keane) but I’d say from the now the credit/blame lies firmly at Rafa’s door. We shall see what transpires, beginning with the ’shit’ (your words) Aquilani. I personally reckon he’ll be a revelation, but there you go. Only time will tell.
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 9:19 pm
Er, not sure what happened with my spelling of ‘Danglish’ there!! lol
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 10:33 pm
your all blaming everybody except the two idiots who sold the club to the dopey yanks! Parry and Moores, Moores just wanted the money! WE should have sold to DIC! I HOPE WE GO INTO ADMINISTRATION WHICH WOULD TEACH THE YANKS A VERY HARSH LESSON, lets face it we aint gooner win anything anymore!

dossena is a shocking player, get shot sooner the better, any swap would be great…
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 11:40 pm
maybe this season is going to have a historic tale ……………liverpool start off poorly new signing aquilani becomes fit and wins liverpool the league
anonymous - August 31st, 2009 at 11:45 pm
put gerrard back in cm and put kuyt up front with torres, they seem to work well ……. kuyt chested it down for torres to score against bolton, ………put benayoun or babel on the right, and keep riera on the left wing because he does well.
