Aston Villa Complete £11m Double Swoop for West Ham’s Collins and Man City’s Dunne

Aston Villa were the Premier League’s biggest spenders on a busy transfer deadline day that produced the expected flurry of signings but no big surprise moves. Martin O’Neill’s side strengthened their defence with the signing of Richard Dunne and James Collins from Manchester City and West Ham United respectively. Both players cost a reported £5million. (Times Online)
Other sources quote the Dunne deal as valued at £6m but who’s arguing. Good pair of decent centre backs but the question is, how can all of these fit in at Villa Park? Martin O’Neill now has Curtis Davies, Habib Beye, Richard Dunne, Carlos Cuellar and James Collins. Admittedly Dunne and Cuellar can also play in other positions but not sure exactly how all are going to be used effectively.
Back to back wins against Liverpool and Fulham have put the club’s season back on track but they were cruelly knocked out in the Europa League and will be hoping the club can achieve a similar level of success to last seasons sixth place finish.

Dont forget Cieran Clarke, looked pretty good against Fulham. How will they be used? Thats what you need these days, six or eight defenders, the same number of midfielders and three or four strikers. Its a long season.

dunne, when confirmed as a villa player, will be automatic first choice centre half, collins will play alongside him i reckon til davies is fit again, luke young right back warnock left back and the rest will get there chance in the carling cup and when others are injured, most solid looking back 4 weve had for a while and everyone playing where they should be 4 once…..

Dunne and Cueller prob first choice, Collins as a decent reserve. Davies will have to vie for first team. May even play Cueller at rb like he did at the start of last season when O’Neill went out of his way not to play shorey.

The way O’Neill was talking after getting knocked sounded like what he did last year anyway – play the kids. It’s not a bad thing at all, just don’t do it when you go over to Russian soil and you’re already chasing the lead…
