He’s Going nowhere!
Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand has been linked with a move to Barcelona or Real Madrid as he looks to life after football.
The Sun claimed that a source close to the player said: “Rio can see the sense of it.
“Not only would it be a fresh challenge as he nears the end of his career but it would also fit all his projects off the pitch.”Former West Ham and Leeds player Ferdinand, 29, runs a record label, a football agency, a lifestyle management company, a digital magazine and a youth charity.
“Rio has big business plans which are already taking shape, and it would really take off if he moved to one of the Spanish clubs,” the alleged source added. (Eurosport)
It seems far fetched to me and seems even less likely than the recent Nemanja Vidic stories linking him with a move in the same direction. These articles do the rounds every now and then, sometimes they have literally no basis in truth and on other occasions they are neatly timed to help a player increase his wage demands.
Rio Ferdinand clearly loves the club and I don’t see him leaving anytime soon. There will be some who argue that a player such as the England centre back may grow bored of playing for a club where he has literally won everything but I think there is a reason that not many high profile English players leave Old Trafford, it’s because they probably believe, quite rightly, that there is no bigger club to join. This is why we have kept the core group of Fergie’s babes all this time. Those that have left, such as Phil Neville or Nicky Butt only did so because they weren’t getting first team football but look at those who have stayed for such a long period.
There can’t be many clubs around that boast so many players who have been at one club for such a long time. I think we can be safe in the knowledge that Rio will remain at the club for some time yet.
