A pair of extremely good value signings.
Tim Cahill & Mikel Arteta may well be the best bargain signings that the Toffees have ever made but David Moyes seldom gets the credit for these two bargain signings that together cost a bargain £3.5m, which is astounding in the modern game.
Both players had made names for themselves before arriving at Goodison Park, albeit Tim Cahill was well known as a successful lower league performer at Millwall when Moyes went in for him and persuaded the Australian that he would be best served by moving to the Blue half of Merseyside.
Mikel Arteta had been a success north of the border with Rangers but then decided that a move to Spain would be necessary for him to break into the international set-up, a plan that backfired and amazingly the 27 year old is still not capped, he joined Everton and has been a revelation.
Both midfielders have been key to the success Everton have experienced under Moyes as both are key part of an attack that has often been light up top and goals and assists from the pair have been the most important aspects of the club’s play and their continued presence at the club must say alot about the respect they have for their Scottish boss.
The importance of the two on the club is as impressive as it is probably indicative of the lack of other options the club on occasions appear to have. If you took away these two from the team’s recent good Premier League finishes it would fairly likely that the club would be mid table or lower.
Given that the club in recent years experienced something of a tight transfer budget it just goes to show just how wise these two captures have been. The fact that neither is consistently listed on ‘top underrated player’ lists says alot and goes to show that both have won fans over from across the board. Cahill with this passionate never say die intelligent attacking play and Arteta with his cultured measured approach, they are in many ways each others polar opposites and the type of players that supporters can’t help but appreciate for their committed consistent performances for the club.
