Sir Alex looks for a long term goalkeeper solution.

Manchester United are keen on Lazio goalkeeper Fernando Muslera as a replacement for Edwin van der Sar.

According to Sportal.it, the Red Devils have laid eyes on the Uruguayan shot-stopper. Muslera joined the Biancocelesti in 2007, and after a poor start last term, the goalkeeper has improved, attracting plenty of interest in the process.

The report suggests the Old Trafford side are looking at the 23-year-old with a view to signing him in the summer. Although Lazio have claimed their custodian is not for sale, they will likely find it hard to keep him if a good offer should come from England.

Ferguson is said to be looking at a number of candidates as an heir to Van der Sar, and Muslera is on top of his wish-list.

There are still some pretty big question marks around the ability of Ben Foster to successfully take over from Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford and whilst those who claim the England international is not up to scratch may be a little unkind it does seem that the former Watford man is still a little short of the mark when it comes to being able to follow such a rock between the sticks.

Many keepers have been linked with Man United in recent months from the likes of Iker Casillas to Igor Akinfeev, but most rumours have seemed little more than paper tittle tattle, could this be more of the same?

Muslera has become the first choice at the Stadio Olimpico and the 23 year old Uruguayan is a pretty solid customer who has started all Lazio’s matches this season but he is by no means the finished article and in many ways is nowhere nearer to being as capable a replacement as Foster currently is so I don’t see much likelihood for this deal.
