Liverpool set for Laughable Barcelona Raid for £30m Midfielder
by YNWA on September 14th, 2009 45 commentsIs anyone surprised?!
It appears Barcelona will renew their efforts to sign Javier Mascherano and Cesc Fabregas at some stage in the future, after their director of football Txiki Begiristain was quoted by Sport as saying that the pursuit of the two midfielders is “something the club has left for later”.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez issued a hands-off warning regarding Mascherano during the summer, having already let Xabi Alonso leave for Real Madrid, but it appears that the Blaugrana have not given up in their attempts to land the Argentinean captain.
Arsenal skipper Fabregas has been the subject of continued speculation about a possible return to Camp Nou, despite saying he was focused and fully committed to the Gunners, and Begiristain now claims that the reason both players didn’t sign for Barca is purely economical. (Goal.com)
So that didn’t take them long did it! Just days after the transfer window closes and it appears the La Liga and Champions League holders are looking to unsettle players all over again. Given the recent punishment handed out to Chelsea I would have hoped that this type of ‘tapping-up’ would be curbed, I was wrong.
Javier Mascherano was clearly slightly tempted by the moves made for him by the Spanish giants and it took some strong words from Rafa Benitez to nip the approach in the bud but it doesn’t surprise me that this has all kicked off again. The fact that Txiki Begiristain is also after Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas implies he is a man under pressure to give the impression that the club will be able financially to keep up with the big spending Real Madrid, when in all likelihood they can’t.
If I were Rafa Benitez I would report the Catalan side at the earliest opportunity!

Silly kids…Cesc is a Barca player, basically on ‘loan’ to Arsenal…He’ll be returning home soon enough.
As for Mascherano, ask the player himself where he wants to play

The truth hurts sometimes doesn’t it? to say Mascherano was slightly tempted by a move to Barca is understating it massively mate, fact is they didn’t make a bid for him, if and when that bid comes in he’ll be off like a shot, of that there is no doubt.
They did nothing illegal in stating their admiration for him, just letting him know they’ll be back soon and to sit tight.
And surely you cannot hold that against the player? he’s not getting any younger and he obviously wants to win major trophies sometime in his career, he won’t do that at his present club when you look at the financial trouble thats going on within will he?
Same goes for Fabregas as well.

i reckon this could be ‘ronaldo’ type deal, ie we have already done the deal. that allowed Mach to stay one more season due to Alonso sale.
Ash T - September 14th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
30 mill for mascherano no way atleat 50mill
he is our player and we will not be forced in to any sale, so if they want him they will pay our price.
anonymous - September 14th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Didnt Masch sign an improved contract securing him at Liverpool for some time?
That said given UK tax who can blame them…
saif - September 14th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
yeah he did
saif - September 14th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
the only way they can get macherano is if they offer a sick player and 20 mill +
eg messi and 30 mill
anonymous - September 14th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
So did Torres. Untill 2013 I think. We wont be loosing any star players for a long time.
saif - September 14th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
in it especially with this shirt sponcership
anonymous - September 14th, 2009 at 7:32 pm
To the nob who said he is not getting any younger just to let you know he is only 24 or were you just stating the obvious that everyone in the world who as ever lived gets older

Ha that made my day! and my respect for barca is going down slightly after these tap-up stuff.
RaNE - September 14th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
masch is more defensive mid i would get silva but would prefare someone who could take his place
Donavan Ried - September 14th, 2009 at 8:43 pm
Like if no one saw this coming
anonymous - September 14th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
i think that if barca really wants them, they will sign them, who wouldn’t want to play for the best team in the world FC Barcelona
Retryboy - September 14th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
If a player really does want to force a move they can contract only means we could get a good price all hearsay for now if he did go can’t see it being in january he is an excellent player but not irreplaceable and agree that this statement was put out now to try and appease barca fans worried by madrids spending power and at the same time unsettle two champions league rivals

To the benefit claiming waster who called me a knob:
He’s going, get over it, liverpool have not been the attraction they were last century for a loooooong time! the guy deserves ti win titles and he isn’t doing that whilst at anfield, especially with with loony tunes in charge.
It’ll be Torres after him…………..LOLZZZZ!!
baggins09 - September 15th, 2009 at 7:52 am
to the first poster are you a muppet? you want to sell the best dm (on his day) in the country and buy an unproven over rated lm/lw player to replace him, and to the last poster FUCK OFF!, who do you support if its not liverpool go away, we came second last season and the only reason utd won wasn’t the teams consistency it was the consistency in ronaldo been given penalty’s and free kicks in dangerous areas for diving by muppet ref’s!, we’re 5 games into the season come back in another 25 then start making prediction you cock

You guys want us to loose out best midfielder right now
sure, it would be great to get Silva, but what is the use of him when you got Lucas at DM?
keep Masherano and sell Kuyt, not the most popular decision but I believe it would be the best for us. I hate him, simple. Great player but I just hate him, ya know haha
baggins09 - September 15th, 2009 at 8:30 am
i’d put money on kuyt getting more goals and assists than silva he’s over rated riera has took his starting spot in spain squad surely that says something! if he was was german no one would give a shit about him its only because he’s spanish. if he was 15m i’d say yeah get him but 23-26m for someone who’s just had an average season and was only 17m last window when he was playing well and people question johnsons price tag!
get lavezzi for that sort of cash, he can play up top on his own and lw,rw and cam and is larger built than silva who weighs about 6stone wet through

ALL THE GOOD PLAYERS ARE GOING BACK TO SPAIN,
EPL IS GOING TO FALL 2ND TO THE SPANISH LEAGUE

Take him Put Gerrard back into midfield.
Did anybody miss Macherano on Saturday.
I know Lucas is not everybody’s cup of tea but boy did he fill Macheranos shoes on Saturday.
Gerrard looks more affective as an attacking central midfielder.
I think we did not have a good pre season due to confederations cup and players reporting a little late. But now we have the gone back on track and we all so excited and anxious to see Roberto Aqaulani in action. Also Aurelio is nearly fit we all know how important his decisive crosses and free kicks can be.
YNWA We are back on track.
baggins09 - September 15th, 2009 at 9:22 am
not the best players, the greediest most mercenary there not worth keeping if thats there only motivations and who’s left? cristiano ‘im a cheating diving dirty little winking bastard’ ronaldo and xabi ‘i wasn’t bothered till they tried to sell me then actually had a decent season to try and engineer a move to real’ alonso,
i wont miss either we’ve already got better options than alonso its just a case of shuffling them about to get the best out of them like yossi
Retryboy - September 15th, 2009 at 9:30 am
Good points baggins m8 we should do everything in our power to keep him lucas is not fit to lace his boots only times ppl say he has had a good game is when he has gone a game without giving the other team a penalty, free kick or own goal he does look better in a more defensive role but he will never have the quality of mascherano
anonymous - September 15th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Hmmm some silly people on here thinkin LFC will lose there best players its all down to Rafa if he doesnt want to sell he wont simple as that. If he does then we can be sure that he will get the very best price for anyone we sell. And undoubtly we will replace them with better players.
In Rafa we trust!
baggins09 - September 15th, 2009 at 9:44 am
i am not the worlds biggest fan of lucas but i don’t hate him either to be fair but in his defense he is actually an attacking mid and i think it’s having to concerntrate so hard on his defensive game that has affected him going forward a bit like when gerrard was asked to hold for england. i would like to see him in the fa cup played in a more advanced role and rest gerrard for the prem he does get in good positions when going forward but isn’t picked out a lot of times, he’s not there yet but he will improve and be a very valueble squad player. i’ve also been told he can take a decent freekick not seen him take one so can’t comment for my self
baggins09 - September 15th, 2009 at 9:55 am
to anon 9:37 this whole in rafa we trust thing i dont get it why do you have such blind faith in him? don’t get me wrong i don’t want rid of him but can’t you see he has his faults like dodgy subs and purchases and persistantly sticking with out of form players and keeping inform players on the bench and like the way he would drop crouch every time he scored and sell him when was our top scorer the season before? and the way he seems to knock players confidences rather than build it people like babel should have come on leaps and bounds not gone backwards and i blame rafa
vince in oz - September 15th, 2009 at 10:03 am
no way would i sell masch to barca, masch is far too good to let go..bunch of assholes at barca, jst go after fabregas u hav more chance of getting him than masch
anonymous - September 15th, 2009 at 10:16 am
wouldn’t sell mascherano but if a player wants to go, no one should stop him as long as the money is right. would sell mascherano if he wanted out for 50-60 million (isn’t he worth three times aquilani or keane?) with that sum three or four class players could be brought in midfield(banega, drenthe, milner, lennon, lavezzi, etc). selling the fringe players left (riera, lucas, aquilani, dossena, degen, voronin) a world class striker to partner torres can be bought.
anonymous - September 15th, 2009 at 10:17 am
forgot babel………what a waste of money, mr.benitez
anonymous - September 15th, 2009 at 10:35 am
why do you want to sell aquilani before he’s even played for us? i agree with milner and lavezzi though i wouldn’t sell masch unless it was for a silly amount of money.
the more clubs buckle to this player pressure the less a contract will mean they’ll end up been nothing more than a gentlemans agreement, i agree its better to let a player who has not settled in the country or team or has personal issues leave but just because a team who has recently won a big trophy or has new found wealthncomes sniffing isn’t a good enough reason to spit your dummy out and hand in a transfer request.
honour your contracts you signed them and no one held a gun to your head to get you to, so shut up play football and be greatful your playing for one of the most prestigious clubs in world football.

swap masch for xabi or iniesta. they are class and it would save paying for a replacement.
anonymous - September 15th, 2009 at 10:58 am
9:02 annon that would be alberto aquilani. how ever i completely agree with your statement.

ALL THE GOOD PLAYERS ARE GOING BACK TO SPAIN,
EPL IS GOING TO FALL 2ND TO THE SPANISH LEAGUE.
Shame you clearly don’t know anything about football hey?
English game far more faster and tougher than Spanish league.
anonymous - September 15th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
LOL! written by a liverpool fan perhaps? you have one quote here: “something the club has left for later”. They were linked with players and didn’t get them, then said (when asked) they would leave it for later (leaving the door open). If you think reporting this will result in anything but the club being laughed at then you are kidding yourself. Chin up son. Liverpool and Arsenal still might finish in the top 4.
Retryboy - September 15th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Another gutless turd who is that sure of their comments they won’t even put their name to it when it comes to europe u all shit yourselves when u come up against an english club especially when u gotta face the mighty reds its only barca out of the crappy spanish league that ever get anywhere these days maybe after spending all that money madrid will get to the quarter finals!
anonymous - September 15th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
To the rent boy who is calling people benefit claiming wasters. It’s obvious who you support. Well done to the person who called you a NOB , ‘cos ‘mate’ that’s exactly what you are. Can you tell me why the best striker in the world plays for Liverpool and not Barcelona now? LOL you twat.zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

To this comment ya thick twat , to say once you think that Mascherano is a good player is ok , maybe even twice . But repeatedly saying it over and over again is called tapping up . TOSSER
Retryboy - September 15th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Agreed thats why managers state clearly when journalists are pushing them that they can’t discuss players because they are under contract
anonymous - September 15th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
sell him and sign ashley young and a defensive mid as a replacement, simple.
baggins09 - September 15th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
if he goes i’d want yaya toure, henry and 20m and i ‘d get lavezzi with 15m plus dossena and swap babel plus 6-7m for milner
anonymous - September 16th, 2009 at 12:30 am
Is it me or is this site getting steadily more retarded. Donovan you seem to be the only regular left, the spelling is getting worse and why the **** is everyone picking dream teams and signings when the window is shut and we have no money! Raise your hands if you’re over 15!
anonymous - September 16th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
wots up with transfers right now i mean real are probably gonna go bankrupt and barca were wasting money and there best striker with the imbrahimovic deal fabregas is way overrated and rafa will probably slap a 65million price tag on mashcarano
anonymous - September 16th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
id get rid of him but make sure its for a stupid amount of money, or xavi,or iniesta as a swap
