Sky Sports understands free agent Lucas Neill is to have a medical at Everton.
The experienced defender is currently looking for a new club after his West Ham deal expired over the summer.
The former Blackburn and Millwall stopper turned down the chance to stay with The Hammers after rejecting their one-year extension offer.
It now seems that the 31-year-old is to pair up with Australian international team-mate Tim Cahill at Goodison Park.
Everton were short of defensive reinforcements following Joleon Lescott’s sale, although they did bring in Sylvain Distin and Johnny Heitingawhile Phil Jagielka remains on the sidelines. The news of a fresh face comes as a boost to manager David Moyes following the loss of captain Phil Neville to a long-term injury in their 2-1 defeat to Fulham.
Neill, who can also operate at right-back, will now undergo a medical ahead of signing a contract with the Merseysiders. (Sky Sports)
Lucas Neill has been looking for a club for some time now and had apparently scared off a number of suitors, most notably in La Liga, with his high wage demands. It appears that the Toffees are not so worried about such matters, after all they are looking to land an experienced international who on his day is a pretty useful defender who will after all cost them nothing to sign.
With Joleon Lescott long gone such a signing would make sense in the short term and along with the other recent acquisitions will go a long way to forming a solid back line for the Goodison Park outfit. Having spent 14 years plying his trade in England Neill has a great deal of Premier League know how and could turn out to be a wise addition to a rapidly increasing Everton squad.
David Moyes will hope that the Australian can help plug a defence that has conceded ten goals in their first four Premier League matches.
