Wenger enters race to sign goalie, is Almunia’s starting role in jeopardy?
Arsenal and Manchester City have reportedly joined Manchester United in the race to sign Lazio goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.
The 23-year-old shot-stopper has made 24 Serie A appearances for the Biancocelesti since arriving from Montevideo Wanderers in his native Uruguay in 2007.
The 6ft 3in glove-man, who has been called up by his national team but yet to earn his first cap, has already linked with a move to Old Trafford next summer.
However, according to Tuttomercatoweb.com, the Premier League champions will face competition for the starlet’s signature from rivals Arsenal and Manchester City.
The Gunners have recently been forced into fielding 21-year-old Italian Vito Mannone following injuries to Manuel Almunia and Lukasz Fabianski. (Four Four Two)
Vito Mannone dealt well with only his second Premier League appearance, keeping a clean sheet against Wigan but Arsene Wenger could well still be looking for another keeper hence the speculation linking Arsenal with a move for Lazio’s Uruguayan Fernando Muslera.
Manuel Almunia has come in for some criticism this term which seems harsh given he was in top form last season but the Spaniard may well be in line for some very real competition from the possible transfer target.
The 23 year old has been the target of much speculation revolving around the Rome based goalie making a move to the Premier League where the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United are said to be circling.
Muslera has been getting some rave reviews for his Serie A performances at the tail end of last term and the beginning of the new season but he has claimed that he wants to just concentrate of doing a job for the Stadio Olimpico side but then he is unlikely to say anything different. Given that Lazio are not even close to the level they were when the lifted the Italian championship in 2000 and that they finished in just tenth spot last season, it does seem likely that if any decent side came calling then Fernando may well just consider such a move.
