Sol Campbell Set for Spurs Return: Hideous Rumour or Distinct Possibility?
by Mad Dog and Glory on September 23rd, 2009 20 commentsOh sweet Jesus!
Portsmouth Vs Tottenham Tickets Still Available!
Word has it that Harry Redknapp is trying to lure his former Portsmouth defender back to White Hart Lane. Despite being quoted earlier in the season as saying he would be unwilling to bring Campbell back to Spurs, mainly due to the controversy surrounding his move to arch rivals Arsenal, the Tottenham boss is still a big admirer. He described Campbell as being among “the top six central defenders in the Premier League”, going on to state that he’s “still a fantastic player”.
Spurs had started the season in great form, but back-to-back defeats to Manchester United and Chelsea have knocked the gloss off a tad, and are currently in the midst of a defensive crisis. Long-term injuries to Jonathan Woodgate and Michael Dawson have prevented them taking any part so far this season. To rub salt in the wound, Sunday’s London derby saw both Sebastien Bassong and the perennially crocked Ledley King withdrawn with injuries, leaving the North London club with virtually no genuine centre-halves to choose from.
The big question is, how would Spurs fans react to a return of their ‘turncoat’ former captain? Every visit to White Hart Lane has provided a very hostile response from the home fans. Abuse at last season’s match against Portsmouth led to arrests, and this was over seven years on from the infamous move to the Gunners.
Although only a rumour at the moment, this move could set even more tongues wagging in what is turning out to be a magnificently controversial season so far, and its only late September! (Off the Post)
Whilst most rumours of this magnitude need to be taken with a pinch of salt, I would recommend a bucket load of the stuff for this particular nugget of speculation. Harry may well be losing centre backs to injury the way some of us lose coins down the back of sofas but any attempt to bring Sol back to White Hart Lane will surely be met with fervent opposition.

If Sol Campbell does come back to Spurs after all he has been put through,he should be given a standing ovation from every single person in the stadium.

Clearly a lot of people either don’t know or have forgotten what he did to Spurs. It isn’t that he went to Arsenal. It is that he lied and schemed his way to seal a lucrative Bosman, going to Arsenal just added insult to injury. For years prior to his departure Spurs had been receiving astronomical bids for him, Man U offered £9M with one year left on his contract. Sol kept on saying that he was committed to Spurs so that he wouldn’t be sold. Being Spurs man through and through the board and the fans all believed him. Once the contract period was over he walked down the road and pocketed a lot of cash by signing for Arsenal.
He will never be forgiven and nor should he.

We all need forgiveness once in a while – and Spurs need Sol right now

There are clearly some ’supporters’ who’d like Campbell to return given our current plight, but if the board want to reduce attendances and cause one of the biggest rifts in the entire history of our club, go ahead and sign him up. Redknapp hasnt a clue about supporters and how they feel as is evident by his comments last week. Campbell however has only done to County what he’s done to EVERY club that have had the displeasure of employing him, albeit a little sooner, but then again he’s 35 and well past it, so times running out isnt it…one more payday eh Sol you scumbag, lying piece of excrement?

One thing I have always detested about being a Spurs fan is the mentality of some of the fans. I don’t think Sol signing for Arsenal was a particuarly bright idea but the guy deserves to make a living.

As well as he has done so far if this happens Harry should be sacked on the spot as it will show he is not Spurs minded.

Sure he needs to make a living. How about sweeping the streets of Tottenham.
How would your employer feel if you shit on them and cost them a small fortune.
I couldn’t see them re-employing you.

Must not happen.
‘Arry on TV, not long ago, saying if he was at any other club he would sign Soiled Bumbag – he must understand the fans just will not have this.
To anyone, including Spurs fans, trying to justify The Biblically Devious One, you obviously have no idea, even when explained to you, just what this ‘thing’ did.
He claimed to be a lifelong Spurs fan; he was nurtured through the academy; at time when Spurs were aspiring to break ito the big time again (for a change), and hoped to build a defence around (prob) the best central defender of his generation), Mr Integrity did whay he did – and no, he didn’t just join Woolwich Wanderers, in the words of anonymous, above ” he lied and schemed his way to seal a lucrative Bosman, going to Arsenal just added insult to injury. For years prior to his departure Spurs had been receiving astronomical bids for him, Man U offered £9M with one year left on his contract. Sol kept on saying that he was committed to Spurs so that he wouldn’t be sold. Being Spurs man through and through the board and the fans all believed him. Once the contract period was over he walked down the road and pocketed a lot of cash by signing for Arsenal.” May I just add, he issued, at regular intervals, statements claiming that he was close to agreeing a new contract at the Lane, only for it to be subsequently revealed that, at the time of issueing these statements, he had been holding secret meetings with Mr Whinger (he was still a Spurs player, did it effet his performances?). No fan, pundit, or human being of any variety should live under any apprehension that ‘all he did was move club’, or ‘move to The Nomads – it was far, far worse – it was deceitful, disrespectful, sneaky, and insulting, to anyone who not only supports Spurs, but to all true football fans. It is creatures like him, with some ability but no integrity, who are ruining the game.

My girlfriend is struggling to find work in London. I really hope she doesn’t return to her native Czech republic. I’d do anything to keep her here. Long distance relationships are a struggle, even if only a couple of hundred miles. You’re partner is not there to snuggle up to each night or run you a bath or cuddle you when a fan shouts abuse at you. My guess is that Sol and Michael reached crisis point and he was given a ‘It’s either them or me’ ultimatum. County just couldn’t compete with Barrymore.
