Liverpool Midfield Duo Miss Fiorentina Trip: Babel’s Chance to Shine?
by YNWA on September 28th, 2009 219 words | 110 commentsTime for Babel to shine?
Portsmouth Vs Liverpool Tickets Still Available!
Javier Mascherano and Yossi Benayoun have been ruled out of Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League clash with Fiorentina.
The midfield pair have not travelled with the rest of the squad to Italy for Tuesday’s Group E tie due to illness and injury respectively.
Maschaerano, who made a late appearance off the bench in the weekend win over Hull City, is suffering from sickness, while Benayoun picked up a leg knock in the same game.
Argentine enforcer Mascherano was expected to return to the starting line-up against Fiorentina, but his absence means Steven Gerrard is likely to continue in midfield alongside Lucas Leiva.
Ryan Babel will be hoping to get the nod to replace Benayoun in the starting line-up after his two-goal show as a substitute against Hull. (Sky Sports)
Whilst it’s a shame that both Javier, and especially Yossi have been ruled out of the trip to Florence, given Babel’s quality cameo appearance against Hull perhaps this may not be such an issue.
Everyone at the club at present has upped their games in recent weeks and whilst we have had a few defensive lapses I still feel we are well placed to go to Fiorentina and come back with something and set us up nicely Lyon double header.

babel is a good player its just that he dosent fit into this liverpool team…he should go to say aston villa where they use pace
anonymous - September 28th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
please babel! prove urself tomorrow
anonymous - September 28th, 2009 at 2:13 pm
Yeah shouldn’t be an issue as long as babel plays on the right or up front with torres. Otherwise, he will look his clumsy old self, losing the ball due to lack of confidence and/or trickery due to his obvious handicap. Losing in the champions league is like shooting yourself in the leg, you have to work that much harder to get the ball back. Not that fiorentina are world beaters but at least they should be on a par with aston villa and tottenham which means we should respect them. I think rafa is getting the idea though, saturday’s game was the first time he played babel up front where he had a chance to shine. BUT who knows we may see aurelio in midfield [if deemed fit], kuyt on the right and gerrard as ss, so babel may well end up on the bench. We can only wait and see
anonymous - September 28th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
sorry it should read “losing the ball in the champions league is like shooting yourself in the leg…”
Hoogleboogybugleboy - September 28th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
I think that Babels 2 goals on Saturday are giving people false hope. His first goal was a good goal but the same cannot be said for his second. For me Babel is just not good enough. A player of his age should know his best position and Babel just doesn’t seem to. I realloy hope that he will prove me wrong on Tuesday night but i won’t be holding my breath.
Ryan Babel - September 28th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
i think that babels first goal was good passing and movement, but if he could the the kind of through balls that torres gets he would be able to score one or two. I would like it to be torres and babel up front because the though tof their pace together could work excellently.
Retryboy - September 28th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
Its not that babel doesn’t know his best position it is that his best position is exactly the same as the worlds best centre forward he is good enough to be his back up but i don’t think he could play alongside him think kuyt would have to take that role and have babel on the right. Don’t believe the mascherano sickness story think his head has been turned by barca and the book should be thrown at them for disrupting our player at the start of the season
Ryan Babel - September 28th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Yh i suppse torres needs a partner who will drop back and play him through, but i feel that when its torres and kuyt then torres doesnt get the best service because two of his goals v hull were from benayoun playing him through, so we need either gerrard and benayoun to get the best of torres, thats why his partnership with gerrard went so well
saif - September 28th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
if it was me i would play reina
johnson kyrgiakos ayala insua
kuyt gerrard aurelio riera
bable torres
Ryan Babel - September 28th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
yh that looks good but why kyriakos and ayala v adrian mutu
Hoogleboogybugleboy - September 28th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
For me Babel does not have the football intelligence to play up front for Liverpool. Why doesn’t he just concentrate on playing well in a position that he would push for a place in the team in like left or right wing. He has the pace, he has the skill I just think that his attitude is all wrong.
Regarding Mascherano. If the guy is feigning illness, which I very much doubt, then he should be sacked not sold. Maybe his head has been turned by Barca but he is a professional footballer for Liverpool and captain of Argentina so he should act accordingly. I think his performances this season have been dire anyway and in my opinion he won’t be missed. I really hope that he picks his game up and recovers for Chelsea on Sunday.
Hoogleboogybugleboy - September 28th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
Saifg. Are you serious about that team? If you are then I think that you are very lacking in your knowledge of football. That defence would get ripped to shreds by Fiorntina.
Hoogleboogybugleboy - September 28th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
Sorry Saif. I put a g on the end of your name for some reason.
saif - September 28th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
soz kyrgiakos and ayala would be in subs carra and skrtil would be in defencs as for the subs n gog would be another one to put in there
Hoogleboogybugleboy - September 28th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Yeah right Saif. You put up 11 players in a 442 formation with no subs. Don’t try and wiggle out of it.
saif - September 28th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
well spoted
isaac hunt - September 28th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
when agger gets fit we should try him with kelly who looks very good.we should probably keep carragher or skrtel for now but they have been very poor and we cant afford to give stupid mistakes away against the better teams like they have recently.

johnson—————-agger——skrtel/carragher———insua

Retryboy - September 28th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Massa should be more professional and remember the shit situation he was in at west ham and how is career was going b4 rafa showed a mountain of faith in him he does owe this club a huge debt. Just seems that rafa is battling with him he made him play 90 minutes in the carling cup and the argentines attitude stunk was on the bench against hull and now he is ill just seems like there is more to this hope it isn’t the case. Also does anyone know if being an unused sub in the debrecen game would cup tie him because if not that could explain it if he isn’t cup tied for the champions league his value in january would be a lot more.
Retryboy - September 28th, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Isaac please have some faith in carragher hate the fact that ppl are so quick to right him off rafa has come out backing him saying his fitness and speed tests are better than last year also have said b4 skrtel and carra are 2 similar 2 play 2getha and skrtels positioning causes a lot of our problems get carra back with agger and we will have no problems and skrtel should be jamie’s back up
31 is not old for a centre back as rafa says should still have 2 or 3 years at the top his passion for the club is something we can’t replace
anonymous - September 28th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Isaac hunt
Sorry but Benayoun should get in the team before Riera any day of the week. Kuyt [1st Choice] / Babel on the right and Benayoun [1st Choice]/ Riera on the left. Apart from that nothing wrong with the team.
IMHO- Babel should get a chance ahead of Ngog and Voronin as backup to Torres
Ash T - September 28th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
i think we should sell mascherano, he is abit inconsistence, but on his day he is the best defence mid.
sell him for about 40-50mill
and with that money buy ashley young – 25mill (the fact that downing as gone there might indicate that young is on his way in the summer when downing is fit)
also get milner for 15mill(villa might get bentley which means milner might be going soon.
then with the 20mill transfer budget we could get veloso or yaya or fabrice muamba to replace mascherano
and with the sales of babel, reira, degen, voronin we could buy a defender to replace carragher (cahill, wheater, steven taylor?)
Hoogleboogybugleboy - September 28th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
I have to agree with Retryboy on this. Carragher will ALWAYS be first choice. The man is one of the best defensive centre backs in World football. He might have made a couple of mistakes and been a bit off the pace at the start of the season but I would bet my house that he will be back to his best from now on. I’m more concerned with Skrtel at the moment.
Also I wiould also have to say that Benayoun and Kuyt would always get the nod before Babel and Riera. I would also put Lucas ahead of Mashcherano at the moment too.
Hoogleboogybugleboy - September 28th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
The official site say’s that Mashcherano has a tight hamstring which could well be the case. He will be more needed at Stamford Bridge oin Saturday so it is probably wise not to risk him tomorrow. Only time will tell if his attitude is right. I’m sure that Rafa will take no shit and will sit him on the bench rather than risk a player who’s heart isn’t in it.
Ryan Babel - September 28th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
is it true that carra and skrtel have swapped positions if so why?
Retryboy - September 28th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
Carra has always played as the right centre back with sami and agger and up until the first couple of games were done with skrtel too skrtel normally plays at the right centre back too rafa decided to change it around if you saw the west ham game carraghers nightmare began because he missed trying to clear a ball off his left foot got caught in possession and hines hit the bar.
anonymous - September 28th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
It did say on SSN that Benayoun wasnt fit but on the website it says he’s in the squad
Team 4 tomorrow
Reina
Johnson Carra Skrtel Insua
Benayoun Gerrard Lucas Babel
Kuyt
Torres
Ryan Babel - September 28th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
if we can sort the defence out again and the attack stays the same we could easilly win the league and champions league also the attack could get netter with aqua man
anonymous - September 28th, 2009 at 6:26 pm
The best team to play is
Reina
Johnson Carragher Kyrgiakos Aurelio
Kuyt Gerrard Lucas Riera
Benayoun
Torres
anonymous - September 28th, 2009 at 6:29 pm
for the liverpool-arsenal match in the carling cup
he should play

Babel Spearing Plessis Riera/Benayoun
Ngog Nemeth

anonymous - September 28th, 2009 at 6:32 pm
Very Impressed
Ryan Babel - September 28th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
yh impressed but just looks like a weaker version of johnson. we could do with a defense minded RB for variety like erm darby
anonymous - September 28th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
nemeth is loaned out fool..
RyanO - September 28th, 2009 at 7:42 pm
I was impressed with Degan as well, he actually exists and wasn’t carried off the pitch! As for Masch, we could be reading too much into this, but it seems his character is not up to snuff thus far. I would hate to think he is going to play games like this until he gets his transfer. Hopefully, this is a precautionary measure as we shouldn’t need him to beat Fio anyway.

Evening Ryan Babel,Hoogleboogybugleboy,Ash T,saif, isaac hunt and last but not least Mr Retryboy …….
Hoogleboogybugleboy – September 28th, 2009 at 3:23 pm …….”For me Babel does not have the football intelligence to play up front for Liverpool.” ………. Sorry Hoogleboogybugleboy I have to disagree with you, it’s not Intelligence that Babel lacks it is coordination that he lacks. How many times have we seen him tread on the ball, or leave it behind?…… Even when he tackles someone he often fouls them where he is so clumpsy ……. he is just not good enuff
...samlfc.... - September 28th, 2009 at 8:12 pm
This is by no means his last chance toshine but to prove that the good performance he had in the game against Hull was no fluke this would be a great chance to finally step upwards and become a vital role in our team.
I think he has now built alot of confidence thanks to that performance of his and i think he will do well tomorrow night however as donavan ried correctly said he lacks coordination but i think he could improve on that though
lets get through tomorrow night and think about chelsea!
P.s Good evening everyone!
Retryboy - September 28th, 2009 at 9:27 pm
Evening donovan all the above named and samlfc… I agree it does seem like babel lacks touch and co-ordination can’t see it being down to skill tho with how highly the likes of van basten rated him as a youngster think its been the constant pressure he has felt himself under, to perform or be axed and perform out of position rafa always, always, always takes off the wingers first in the game and kuyt has been automatic choice for rafa on the right for couple of seasons so thats left yossi, riera and babel battling for one spot its like benayoun was always quality only got a real run in the team regularly this year said b4 kuyt is good but shouldn’t be such an automatic choice

Agger is playing 2moz for the reserves against city gr8 news! Hopefully he can get back to the form that had us all seeing a bit of hansen in him! Ngog is in the line up too which says to me that rafa now sees babel as the back up to torres my team would be reina, johnson, insua, carragher, skrtel, lucas, gerrard, riera, kuyt, torres, babel don’t think its ideal kuyt as the 2nd striker but with no aquilani, benayoun, nemeth loaned out options are very limited only other thing would be to bring spearing in moving lucas and gerrard up a spot

Reina

as for babel yes he could shine only if hes put up front

Evening Samlfc, I fear that we could be on the end of a very poor result if we do not get our act together at half time. However, i am optomistic that Liverpool will come out at half time and give it a real go.
Fiorentina 2 – 1 Liverpool final score is my bet now.

Donavan Ried - September 29th, 2009 at 8:46 pm
2-0 down half time …….. Insua having a torrid time, Johnson showing what i nfeared about his denfencive play( Too casual ) Lucas ove rwhelmed …. it is not work ….. take off Emiliano Insua and Yossi Benayoun bring on Babel up front with Torres, let Tores play from behind Babel, Kuyt back on the right bring on Albert Riera left, drop Fabio Aurelio to left back, and Gerrard to the Middle …..get to the ball first and inject some pace into the game …. Rafa needs to do this now now on the 60th minute
RyanO - September 29th, 2009 at 8:56 pm
This result is all thanks to the changing of formation that was, to me, simply inexplicable. Why move Gerrard back in the “hole” and send Torres out up front, alone, just what Fiorentina were hoping for? This shit worked with Alonso, but he’s gone now and someone’s forgotten to scrap the formation. Also, the Brazilian midfield has not worked, at all.
...samlfc.... - September 29th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
This is where Aquillani would of been great cause he knows Fiorentina mroe than any of our team and he knows how the Italin game works but unfortunately he’s injured.
we shold put Babel on with torres as then they can help out each other! plus their pace ca beat the slow Italian defenders its just that we haven’ got the attackig flar going on at the moment

Hicks and Gillet terrible again in defense…at least now Liverpool can focus on finishing in the top half of the table. YANKS MUST GO!!!

Another great display from the potentially wonderful Lucas, what the f_ck does this ape give to Liverpool FC? can someone pls tell me, what exactly does he offer aside from some great f_cking potential according to some people on this site and our leader????
Why wasnt he taken off ?? Why did Rafa persist with 2 dfm type players when we were 2 down??
We were totally over-run in midfield tonight and there is no point in playing Gerrard in any type of so called hole behind Torres if he is not getting the ball.
Seemed very abject from Rafa tonight…………………
anonymous - September 29th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
Another great display from the potentially wonderful Lucas, why the f_ck is this lad playing for LFC, can someone pls explain what exactly does he offer LFC as I and many other just fail to see why this ape is played game after game.
Fiorentina deserved their win no questions asked…………..
anonymous - September 29th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
didn’t see the game, about to watch replay but i’m guessing Lucas is garbage, zonal marking insipid, carragher a step slow, skrtel off-form and stevie-g never sees the ball
RyanO - September 29th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
They did deserve it, but the referee was shit. Called at least 3 fouls on Lucas that weren’t. It’s no wonder an English team have never scored there. Shit tactics from Rafa, he’d better get it sorted before Sunday.
isaac hunt - September 29th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
this is the biggest over reaction ever. ok we have players like skrtel lucas and voronin who shouldnt be playing for liverpool but when we have our full team we will be a much better side than we showed tonite. it is only one game and we can still easily qualify because fiorentina are poor away. the only thing that has really annoyed me tonite is why did we play nearly the whole of the second half with 2 defensive midfielders?? no other team would have
Donavan Ried - September 29th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
For those of you out there who do not know me: – I like to think that i am fair in my judgements of Liverpool players and Manager. I do not mind if we play well yet still end up on the losing side(That’s Football) …. I do not like seeing ANYONE cheat …. and i expect to see anyone in a Liverpool shirt have full commitment for the cause ……
Liverpool vs Fiorentina ……
First half we were run ragged, always second to the ball, some of the players(Named above) were less than impressive …. Rafa waited until the 70th minute before taking off Insua and bringing on Babel(only to play him on the right) …. and fisrt real touch he lays it off to Johnson and then falls over ……. The challenge he made in the centre circle typify his clumsiness and over all lack of co-ordination although he did play one good cross in ……
Why take Kuyt off of Voronin???? …….
I was sitting there thinking that someone needs to run at the defence, run pas a few plyers and that would draw players out of positions, and low and behold five minutes later Martin Skrtel does just that …..
I have never seen so many Liverpool players look so jaded …… only Carragher and Kuyt had good games, Torres lack service,Benayoun should have came off half time, and lucas and Insua looked out of their depth …..
Torres was not foul, his complaints were born out of frustation
Rafa has to take responabilty for the team selection and not changing things at half time …… And the Rafa brigade call him “the man for the job” ….Great joke lads, great joke.
anonymous - September 29th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
should never played aurelio there unless he has match fitness. at least he has an excuse though. lucas on the other hand as good as lost the match for us. he lost the ball more than he tackled for it and when he did try to tackle he gave away stupid fouls which is why we lost to villa. either send him to the academy so they youth can show him how not to give a free kick away EVERY time he goes for the ball and show him how to pass the ball the right was at least once every ten tries. he hesitated more than someone trying to do a speech with a stutter. our man of the match has to be babel as he is the only player who did anything when he got hold of the ball and made a big difference. we have a double header v lyon next so lets win em both as we will have aquilani back for at least one of them. he and masch can be as good as masch and alonso
anonymous - September 29th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
as i have always said donnovan u are a fairweather supporter. i suppose this means that u think ferguson should resign for losing to burnley, mourinio for drawing against some crap team and whoever the rangers manager is for bein hammered. yeah it was a bad team selection in hindsight although i would have likely gone for pretty much the same myself with the players available. dont forget we were playing with a 2nd choice FB in insua with aurelio out of match practice. lucas has been solid up til today, injured mascherano, aquilani and agger who are arguably all first team. kuyt and benayoun when they got the ball did little with it and torres could do nothing when he finally recieved some passes as he was facing a 5 man defence with 2 defensive mids. fiorentina played very well and yet u still say rafa isnt the manager for the job. what an absolute pansy u are donnovan. i doubt anyone would want a supporter like u for their club.

isaac hunt - September 29th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
players like gerrard and torres just thought they had to turn up there tonite. they looked like they had no motivation until the second half. we do always seem to have a bad game in the group stage and lets hope this is the only one. we need aquilani and mascherano playing together regulary and then we will see how good we are.

And what has Rafa done since winning the CL in 2005 and the FA cup in 2006??????? Answer – f_ck all only complain……………………………

watched the first 40 minutes (don’t think i can watch the rest)…Liverpool just outplayed. Jovetic is the real deal, vargas-zanetti-mutu-marchionni wonderful interplay. Best comment of the match: “Skrtel would be hard-pressed to tell you what day it is…” Carra was exhausted in the 28th and the few instances Liverpool had the ball in Tina’s half they were faced with “catenaccio cubed”. Certainly not happy with the lineup but Liverpool have had to play at 110% during their league games to mask their horrid defense. I assume Lucas had a decent 2nd half (by some of the comments) because he looked completely out of his element in the 1st. Great game plan by Prandelli to attack up the left side with Johnson venturing too far into Tina’s half. A couple of terrible calls by the ref (phantom Lucas foul and disregarded hand ball) but once refs reach Italian soil they’re the best money can buy.
Ryan Babel - September 29th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
everyone cant go after lucas the scapegoat cause the whole team didnt pass, control, tackle , close down well today. their pressure was too much
HartLFC - September 30th, 2009 at 1:31 am
I have sat by and read comments on liverpool and now i have decided i couldnt take anymore Lucas is Absolutely Shit. He cant defend he sure cant attack, hes weak on the ball And i doubt hes ever had a good game. He missed a sitter of a header last night and for everyone that says hes getting better you are blind. Voronin is also shit. babel probaly did more last night in 15 minutes than lucas did all game why does rafa continue to play him…..
anonymous - September 30th, 2009 at 5:41 am
for lucas to miss that chance shows hes not even up to school boy level, he must be ashamed to pick up his pay. hes a fruad but you cant blame him, that gimp benetiz is hell bent on destroying liverpool with his pathetic coaching and tactics, christ on a bike the rest of europe are laughing thier tits off. liverpool challenge for a (any) title?, you’re joking. but we can keep pretending that beating low units will make us champions. one more thing, torres has the worst first touch of any world striker but still hes the best? dream on liverpool no title for you playing shit like that

The only positive is that it is only one away game in the champions league group stage that we have lost and the fact that we didn’t turn up in the first half. Had we have played well and lost 2 nil i would be more concerned. I am also not one to slate players needlessly but i am at a loss to see what the point of Lucas Lieva is. He didn’t do one thing right in the game. He gave away needless fouls, missed a sitter of a header and moaned alot. I will accept that the whole team were dreadfully below par but Lucas just isn’t good enough. I hope to God that Aquilani gets fit soon as Lucas is a liability.

Defence is worst i have ever seen at liverpool carragher is the only defender who can defend. Would rather have darby, aurelio and kyrgiakos than johnson, skrtel and insua at the moment least they know when to attack and when to sit and can cross the ball too. When they do attack lucas is supposed to be filling in 2 good games had us thinking he had turned a corner but was back to being a liability again last night never mind the open goal he missed get him out of the club if massa isn’t fit give spearing a chance for christs sake lucas has had millions. Babel looked quality on the right and kuyt was the only one getting close to torres to offer any kind of support b4 rafa saw fit to take him off. Ditch this fucking 4-5-1 get nemeth back from his Loan and play 4-4-2 we are wasting gerrards talents he would have loads more freedom in a 4-4-2 with mascherano beside him aurelio needs to be in the team if for nothing else he can take corners and free kicks which no one else seems capable of. If everyone was fit would play reina, johnson, aurelio, carragher, agger, mascherano, gerrard, benayoun, kuyt, torres, babel on sunday if agger isn’t fit bring in kyrgiakos. Kuyt up front with torres, babel on the right benayoun on the left

Who ever said “Lucas has been solid up til today” needs therapy!
Fact: whenever we play a quality team Lucas gets exposed. Spurs, Villa, Fiorentina.
The only games Lucas is solid in are when we’re slaughtering the opposition because the rest of our team is running them ragged.
He will NEVER EVER win us a game.
He has already lost us more than several.

Something i have been wondering about, why is it that some players i.e. Lucas,Voronin and Babel get given more chances than someone like Andrea Dossena?……. Let’s face it, he has hardly covered himself with glory, but the same can be said for Lucas,Voronin and Babel ……. Like Babel,Dossena has score some great goals (Real and Man Utd), but unlike Babel he has played less games and been given less starts …….. Remember he plays a more left sided midfield roll for the Italian under 21 side, would it not been better for Rafa to have started Fabio Aurelio at Leftback and Andrea Dossena on the Left side of midfield? …….. I truely believe that some of us here could do a better job of managing the team better than Rafa …… I remember watching Arsenal vs Chelsea ( I Think) about four plus seasons back and Chelsea were being over run in the fisrt ten minutes of the game. The then Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho made a dual substitutions in the first ten minutes which turned the game around, something which Rafa could never do ……. So if anybody could shread little on these two points. ………. NB *Please note that unless you posts a reply with your name attached i will not reply or even read it* …….. It will take you around about three minutes to register a name and to get a password

Donavan. If you truly believe that any one who posts on here could do a better job of managing than Benitez then you are living in cuckoo land my friend.
Does making 2 changes after 10 minutes not suggest that the wrong starting 11 was picked in the first place?
I agree that Benitez picked the wrong team last night but one quality a top manager has to have is to be able to make a decision and stick by it. I was shocked to see Aurelio in midfield but I would never be so arrogant as to think that I could do a better job than arguably one of the top managers in World football. It was a bad day at the office. Not one player played well in the first half and that is the reason why we lost.
Red_Phoenix - September 30th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Can’t say Benitez did much wrong with the players he picked. Not having Masch caused a big problem because Aurelio shouldn’t be in central midfield against good opposition and neither should Lucas. The players were rubbish in the first half and showed they could play in the second. The manager can’t do much about players who don’t want to play.
anonymous - September 30th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
i think that lucas, voronin, babel and dossena all need to be be sold in the summer. we need some quality players in our squad to even stand a chance of competing with the likes off chelsea and man utd for the title. as for the CL i think that we can at times be to cautious and that will invite the big european teams on to you. not got the depth in our sqaud. lets hope we get some investment to buy a few decent players.

I hope when Agger is fit he gets a go instead of Skrtel [if Skrtel keeps fluffing up]. I’ve always preferred him. He seems more assured with his touch, has more of a footballing brain and scores 2-5 goals a season with his ferocious shooting as opposed to Skrtel’s 0. Why he isn’t preferred to Skrtel [when he is fit] remains a mystery. I’m sure i’m not the only reds fan that thinks so.

Hoogleboogybugleboy – September 30th, 2009 at 3:45 pm ……… “Donavan. If you truly believe that any one who posts on here could do a better job of managing than Benitez then you are living in cuckoo land my friend. ” …….. Sorry mate i did not say “anyone who posts on here could do a better job of managing than Benitez ” What i said was “I truely believe that SOME of us here could do a better job of managing the team better than Rafa ” ……. and i stand by that commet 100%
“Does making 2 changes after 10 minutes not suggest that the wrong starting 11 was picked in the first place?” ……….. Maybe it does mean just that, but the point is that he recognized it and and took steps to change it straight away unlike Rafa in the Reading game when he play both Mascherano and Sissoko, or Last night but to name two games. In stead of wait 60-70 minutes into the game, Look at might post half time. I said quote “take off Emiliano Insua and Yossi Benayoun bring on Babel up front with Torres, let Tores play from behind Babel, Kuyt back on the right bring on Albert Riera left, drop Fabio Aurelio to left back, and Gerrard to the Middle …..get to the ball first and inject some pace into the game …. Rafa needs to do this now now on the 60th minute” …….. He made the change in the 70th minute …… What a great Manger
“I agree that Benitez picked the wrong team last night but one quality a top manager has to have is to be able to make a decision and stick by it” …… Yes the mistake was his but he should have done more to mchange things, which is my point about Jose Mourinho …….. Rafa just seems viod of ideas at most of the time …… Were as ferguson,Mourinho and Wenger can bring on the right player and get them to play the right roll Rafa seems incapable for do so, this is note about what players Man Utd,Chelsea or Arsenal have …… What was the point of bring on Voronin for Kuyt???? ….. Riera for Benayoun is what Rafa should have done

Have you ever seen the filmTrading Places?…..When the two brother get Eddie Murphy to take Dan Aykroyd job just to prove if some one who did noy get the breaks found themselfs in a top job that they could do it just as well as the guy who got all the breaks …… The points ithat i am driving at is (1) There are managers out there in lower divisions that if given the chance would do a better job than Rafa Benitez and point (2) there are some people who never got into management that would if they did do a better job, and that includes some here

Donavan. Just out of interest. What do you do for a living?
Football is all about opinions and with football everyones opinion is better gthan everyone else’s. I cannot think of one manager who could come in and do Benitez’s job under the circumstances that he has had to endure over the previous seasons and to sayi that there are managers in the lower leagues that could do a better job is nonsense. The clue is in the sentence. “Managers in the lower leagues”.
The reason we lost to Fiorentina was simply that the players did not turn up for the first half. Formations and team selection is irrelevantt if the players picked do not perform. The players have said it themselves.

Michael Owen is injured again. Groin injury after 20 minutes of last nights game. He could be out for 3 weeks. Just for the record. I would never want Utd to do well in any game so therefore I want Michael Owen to fail big time. It would not be right for him to win a premier league medal with the scum especially if it’s before Gerrard and Carragher..

Some of the stuff that gets posted on these blogs is just idiotic. How can people be so ignorant as to believe they can manage a football team better than an experienced/proven manager working day in day out with the squad? Fair enough everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but that’s just laughable.

“Benitez’s job under the circumstances that he has had to endure over the previous seasons and to sayi that there are managers in the lower leagues that could do a better job is nonsense. The clue is in the sentence. “Managers in the lower leagues”. ……. OHHHH i see, your one of the :In Rafa We Trust: Bridgade ……. Two points here (1) If a Manager like, Steve Copple,David Moyes, Roy Keane, or a few others had (a) the money Rafa has had and (b) their Clubs had the prestige of a Liverpool of Man Utd you would see how good some of the really are ………. (2) Where do you think that Rafa can from management wise before he was at Valecia?? …… Here a short little histroy of Rafa ………
Born in Madrid, Benítez played football throughout his youth and joined the Real Madrid academy. He mixed his university studies with his football career at lower division Spanish teams but injury caused him to prematurely retire. He joined Real Madrid’s coaching staff at the age of 26, going on to work as the under 19 and reserve teams coach, and assistant manager for the senior team. Benítez moved away from Real Madrid but management spells at Real Valladolid and Osasuna were short-lived and unsuccessful.
Benítez guided Segunda División side Extremadura back to the Primera División in his first season in 1997, but the team was relegated the following season. He left the club, taking a brief break from football before returning to coach Tenerife in 2000. Benítez was appointed coach of Valencia and he proved himself to be amongst the top Spanish managers by winning La Liga in the 2001–02 season—Don Balón and El País named him Manager of the Year. In 2004, another league title and Valencia’s first UEFA Cup made him the club’s most successful manager. However, a disagreement between Benítez and the club director over team investment caused the Spaniard to switch to English Premier League outfit Liverpool.
Seems to me to prove a point ……. Rafa was given a break ….. Oh you might argue that it was because of his management skills why he got that break, but it had little to do with it, it boils down to luck and being in the right place at the right time, and who you know.
Let me try putting it another way….. Those of you who are into horse racing will see what i mean ….. The Jockey Kirran Falon was riding for many, many years without winning many major races, and then all of sudden a then major trainer Henry Cecil Took a chance on him and started giving him some go ride, Falon is now a top jockey with Many top races wins behind him and has been Champion jockey many a time…….
Rafa is still a slightly above averager manager and there are better out there and thats for sure
