Has our Argentine had his head turned?
Given the incessant speculation linking Javier with a move to Barcelona and the then subsequent poor performances from the usually reliable Argentinean is it fair to assume he may well be pining for a move to the La Liga giants?
When talk was abound that the Catalan side were interested in our mercurial midfielder the noises coming from Javier’s camp, primarily his agent and his wife, implied that a move would be welcomed but Rafa stood firm and wasn’t about to lose Mascherano as well as Xabi Alonso.
Last season the impish battler was superb but this season started woefully for our number 20. Javier looked jaded and slow against Tottenham and put in a similarly confused performance at home to Aston Villa and again away at Chelsea yesterday looked off the pace and unable to get involved in proceedings.
Of the six Liverpool games he has started this season we have lost three and the two games he didn’t start we won easily.
Rafa has come out and publicly defended the player, as he should do, but I am sure that behind closed doors he has had words with the former West Ham man and tried to resolve issues that appear to be clouding the midfielders game.
I am a huge fan of Javier and when he is on his game he is unplayable. A player who breaks up opposition attacks with ease and feeds out the ball intelligently and is always on hand to mop up but the player we have seen this season looks a long way off last season’s man mountain and Benitez needs to sort things out sooner rather than later because right now he doesn’t deserve a place in the starting eleven.
