Liverpool owners to provide Rafael Benitez with £12 million in transfer funds
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez will be given a £12 million kitty to spend in the January transfer window in a bid to bolster the club’s chances of winning the Premier League title.Who retains spending power at Anfield has been a topic of contention in recent years but with the side having already suffered three defeats this season – one more than last term in its entirety – it looks like co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks will provide Benitez will the necessary funds for improvement.
According to the Mail, the Spaniard has already earmarked Lazio striker Goran Pandev as a potential new partner for Fernando Torres and following recent comments made by Gillett, any signings completed in January will have to prove fruitful as speculation over Benitez’s future remains rife. (Telegraph)
Forward Goran Pandev could well be a reasonable purchase for Rafa to make given his relatively small transfer budget. The 26 year old Macedonian has been at Lazio for five years now and has made noises about being interested in a move to the Premier League.
The £12m rated former Inter Milan man offers a good foil for El Nino, he is good in the air and holds the ball up well and can create space for Fernando Torres and whilst he isn’t prolific he can certainly weigh in with a decent tally and more importantly take some slack off Liverpool’s top marksman.

Pandev is a good call. Top notch player, not too expensive and very experienced.
Donavan Ried - October 7th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
Wish that was the case, but Rafa does not know how to play two up front,. Pity though
Scouse Magic - October 7th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
He’s a good player, but i tend to agree with Donovan, put Stevie back to centre mid where his most affective and get Torres a partner and fast.
Also to make another point, i though his contract was up at the end of this season, so we won’t be paying £12m for him, it’ll be more like £3M-5M or nothing in the summer.
Hoogleboogybugleboy - October 7th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Donavan. Just for your information, Benitez always played with two “up front” at Valencia so I would suggest that you do a bit of research before spouting your nonsense.
desertfox - October 7th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
if gerrard back to mid how bout aqulani?

Cheers you ANONYMOUS cunt.
anonymous - October 7th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
since aqullani is a attking mid, he can play in the “hole” while gerrard drops back with masch. benayoun on the left and if we cant get a proper rm, kuyt on the right may be fine..
Hoogleboogybugleboy - October 7th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Maybe that was a bit harsh. Cheers Mr ANONYMOUS 2:08. ANONYMOUS being the operative word.

yossi gerrard kuty
aurelio carra agger johnson

Hoogleboogybugleboy – October 7th, 2009 at 1:50 pm …….. “I would suggest that you do a bit of research before spouting your nonsense.” ……. I guess i was right then? ….. You have had the hump since i told you what i think of Rafa? ….. As for Rafa playing two up front for Valencia, ah who gifts a F*cK, that
Valencia not Liverpool …… But I will stand corrected on that point
Ash T - October 7th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
i do think his contract is up at the end of the season,
also aquilani can play right mid so maybe we will be playing more of a 4-4-2 formation with benayoun on the right mascherano, gerrard in the middle and aquilani on the right. and torres upfront with a partner.
Hoogleboogybugleboy - October 7th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Donavan. Why would I have the hump about your opinion on Benitez.? Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
I was replying to your comment about Benitez not knowing how to play 2 “up front” and merely pointed out that he did at Valencia. I would imagine that Benitez knows everything there is to know about football and that playing “2 up front” is not always the best way to play. Torres for example plays better on his own up front. It’s all about the supporting midfield players performing and supporting and so far this season that hasn’t happened regularly enough. People seem to think that buying another striker will be the end to the problems but I would suggest that the problems that Liverpool are having are nothing to do with that. Too many mistakes are costing us this season not lack of a partner for Torres. Nearly every goal that we have conceded this season have come from mistakes and that has to be eradicated. I agree that it would be great to have a World class striker to play when Torres can’t but there isn’t a striker in the World that is good enough to replace him and if there was he wouldn’t want to sit on the bench.
anonymous - October 7th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Ha you guys comenting above sound so pathetic, “Your a C**T”, “Your anonymous”…haha, try growing up lads, its great.
Onto the story, Hell yeah if we can get him for twelve do it, great player. My only concern would be can he lead the line on his own in Torres abscence? I always thought Goran was skillful but mayb not the strongest, could be wrong though.
Reds Lewis - October 7th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
Hoogleboogybugleboy
are you assuming that torres will be fit all season?
In which case yes we only need one striker.
BUT
He isnt going to be fit for every single game is he?
so we need options….
and by buying a decent striker that can play alongside him or kuyt/babel up front when torres is injuired then we woul be covered.

Thanks for the advice. I’m 43 just for the record. I agree with you that some of the slagging off that goes on on here is pathetic and I don’t normally get involved in it but I’ve had just about enough of some posters who do nothing but slag other posters off all the time and who think that their opinion is the only one that counts. I try to always have a reasoned debate and don’t slag anyone off but sometimes it’s the only language that some people understand. Why don’t you log in, it’s great and you are not anonymous. It’s not difficult and it helps others to reply to your posts..

just a thought, why not play glen johnson as right winger since he plays like one and doesnt defend so well anyway!

Reds Lewis.
I’m not suggesting for one minute that Torres will stay fit all season but it’s not easy to convince a top class player to come to a club and sit on the bench until needed. I personally do not think that Babel is good enough and for me N’gog or Voronin are better options. I don’t know much about Pandev but I would suggest that 12 million pounds would be better being put towards the capture of someone like Aguero or a top quality attacking midfielder like Lavezzi.

That’s some team mate. I think we’d probably win everything if we could field that team.
Warren Bloggs - October 7th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
I wouldd personally prefer his teamate Zarate, but Pandev is a very usefull player. I remember him playing against England with Macedonia, and for the most part he was their only real quality player capable of running and getting past players. He isn’t prolific but could do a very good job as a second striker or out on the wing even (like he does for his country). As we only have £12m in January I would very much like Rafa to do the following:
Sell or swap Babel and Vorornin to Werder Bremen in exchange for Aaron Hunt.
Sell Andrea Dossena to Napoli and raise a further £5m
Snap up Patrick Viera on the cheap from Inter and possibly Sol Campbell as extra cover in defence on a free.
Sign Goran Pandev for £12m or less from LAZIO.
THUS:
PLAYERS OUT……………..BABEL, VORONIN, DOSSENA.
PLAYERS IN………………..HUNT, VIERA, CAMPBELL AND PANDEV.
What does everyone think? Dom, Donovan?
Warren Bloggs - October 7th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
There are also rumours doing the round that Rafa very much likes Kjaer of Palermo, who himself is a reds fan. I just feel we need another option at the back.
Reds Lewis - October 7th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Hoogleboogyboy,
I agree…Babel isnt up to the challenege and I think he should be sold to be honest.
However, aguero would cost in the region of 40m surely? that is our budget for 2 years lol….
I know what youre saying about a world class player sat on the bench but…
surely, torres would be able to work effectively with another striker in support.
In my opinion, we need somethign different to throw at some teams…
The likes of hull etc torres is brilliant but he needs somebody strong and powerful like Cole to play alongside, when we face teams with a very strong defence.
Reds Lewis - October 7th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
warren…
I dont think campbell and Viera can cut it in the EPL anymore…
If we have limited funds then how about buying Lennon from spurs?
He is extremely quick and has a good first touch.
We could play kuyt up front with torres then…
With Riera/benny on the left, and gerrard and aquilani in the center..lennon on the right…
Masch behind them and Johnson, agger/skrtel.carragher/aurelio/insua in defence?
So like a 3-1-4-2 formation?
Reds Lewis - October 7th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
In my previous post i forgot to include that im guessing we could get lennon for around 20m….
He was bought for 1m from leeds
anonymous - October 7th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Well Pander also can play as a winger.I think that Liverpool will like to play him as LWM/SS.He will interchange positions with Gerrard.
Hoogleboogybugleboy - October 7th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
I know what you are saying about the fee for Aguero but no one really knows what the finances at Liverpool are like and there is a new shirt sponsorship deal in place and possible new investment. I just think that 12 million spent on Pandev could be another stick to beat Benitez with. Not only that but Is Pandev any better than Peter Crouch? I personally don’t think that he is and we all know what happened to him. He’s Sitting on Spurs bench which is ironic really.
anonymous - October 7th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Rafa got £20 million plus any other money raised through player sales. So if my maths is correct Rafa has £12 million to spend. This is not extra money from the owners but part of this seasons transfer budget.
He could sell Babel or Voronin to add to this fund and maybe buy a better player worth £20 million+. In general if you spend average money, you get average players and you don’t get the silverware.
anonymous - October 7th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
I would use that money on a younger player like luis suarez from ajax who is only 22.
Hoogleboogybugleboy - October 7th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
I don’t agree. The Mancs spent 30 million on Berbatov and he hasn’t exactly set the World on fire. In my opinion transfer fees are way over inflated at the moment anyway and you don’t always get value for money.
anonymous - October 7th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
Hoogleboogybugleboy – Maybe you are right about Berbatov but I would rather have him on our bench than Voronin.
The main problem at Liverpool is that to buy a decent player Rafa normally has to sell players first to raise enough cash. With this policy our squad never seems to get better, where as Fergie can put Nani, Anderson etc in the reserves for a few years to learn their trade, Rafa can’t.
Warren Bloggs - October 7th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Pandev is very good value at £12m actually, especially when the like of Darren Bent who signed for Spurs from Charlton for £16.5m and then another £10m (rising to £15 based on appearances) to Sunderland. Defoer returned to Spurs for £15m and Bellamy went to City for £14m. Do not forget we spent near enough £20m on Robbie Keane. Seeing as Goran is such a telented striker, is a good age at 26 with valuable experience seems ideal to me, then sign Aaron Hunt and Kjaer from Palermo and sell Dossena, Babel and Voronin.
Warren Bloggs - October 7th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
sorry i meant *Defoe not ‘Defoer’?!

I don’t now who he is ut i’m guessing he is good becuase of what everyone else is saying
However you never know but the’re could be a good striker in our reserves or youth system which could cme in handy
I mean Carrager,Gerrard and Michael owen came out of our ranks and the proved to be world beaters although the latter has had a major setback in hi career

All this January stuff is pie in the sky- who trusts the managers will give us anything for transfers?? And how many of these linked players ever join Liverpool- not many. I am more interested with who we have in the squad & the fitness of Aquilani so we can field a quality team with WHO we have. THIS team can match anyone & will prove it ima. Getting positions right & players like Benayoun getting more match time is where we can get more consistency. Hope we do land some world class players -preferably a right winger- i will always have faith in Liverpool & support through the good & the bad but these Yank managers are bad seeds my friends……..

agrre with warrens blogg but what about getting a quality left winger sg petrov
anonymous - October 8th, 2009 at 1:19 am
since we are in such monetary crisis, and since we are in such need of a striker and a winger who could operate on both wings and play a supporting striker role, why cant we just get The Emperor – Adriano from Flamengo? Hes 27, lost a lot of weight and has scored 15 goals in his last 22 games for flamengo this year ? Shouldnt cost more than 3/4M even if we had to “BUY” him off flamengo ! I mean what dsnt he have ? Speed, Stamina, Clinical Finish, Wing Play Ability, Strength on the ball !! Seriously we should get adriano for cheap in January or on loan for a year or two and sell up voronin, babel and dossena [ 5+5+12+20(transfer budget) ] and use the 42 M to get an awesome winger ( ashley young, david silva, juan mata, franck ribery ), and the rest could be spent on a good centre back, a centre midfielder etc.
anonymous - October 8th, 2009 at 2:02 am
you might call me crazy for this but why not let yossi partner torres? …………we see him dancing past tackles all the time he doesnt have a bad shot on him either, put kuyt on the right until coz he didnt do a bad job there

anonymous - October 8th, 2009 at 7:04 am
Rafa needs to spend any money he is given very wisely, as some of the players who has brought to the club have simply not been good enough, he brings too many average players in.
Rafa needs to eat humble pie and face up to facts, lucas, Dossena, Riera, Degan, Voronin are just not good enough to play for liverpool.
Kuyt is a good squad player, but if we had an out and out right winger he would/should be on bench.
And eventually bit by bit replace them with young class players with the potential to being world class in future, Lucas out, Michael Johnson of Manchester City in.
Dossena replace with Marseille left back Taiwo,
Albert Riera replace with Diego Capel of Seville or Royston Drenthe of Real Madrid with out and out pace , trickery and youth!
we need an out and out pacy right winger who can stretch teams at home and away: Jesus Navas of Seville or Aaron Lennon of Tottenham.
Degan should be sold and Rafinha For Schalke should be brought in and lastly Voronin should be sold and Lukas Podolski should be brought in.
Our squad is weak at the moment, if Rafa can see sense now and he can accept that there are players he has brought in who are simply not good enough to wear the shirt, then he should let them go sooner than later and cut his losses instead of keeping them there out of his pride to proove that they are good enough, when they simply are not!!!!!!!!!!!
anonymous - October 8th, 2009 at 7:05 am
ADRIANO IN JANUARY !!!!!!!!!! SILVA AND ASHLEY YOUNG NEXT YEAR !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! VORONIN,BABEL,DOSSENA OUT !!!!!!!!

swap lucas and pay 12 million
anonymous - October 9th, 2009 at 12:35 am
great idea swap lucus for adriano, heard that he is very highly rated in brasil still?? i would love to have aguero at liverpool and feel he would be a big big success…. but as we don’t have the money i feel buying hamsik off of napoli is very important i have watched him in many games and he is very very very good. i don’t think ppl really realise that this guy can do things…. i work in germany and when i can i watch and go to a few of the munich games…
ozil of werder bremen is truly a joy to watch and hunt is good but needs a few more years…
anonymous - October 9th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
buy dzeko instead he is valued at around 15m. he plays really well for wolfsburg and he’s only 23. 10m plus dossena. 2m plus babel and voronin for a good winger simao/ joe cole/ jesus navas/ rodriguez. or striker henry/ ronaldinho/ fabiano/ podolski.
sign a few players on loan bentley, van der vaart players like tht.
Retryboy - October 10th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
We have the perfect partner for torres he is on Loan in athens maybe when aquilani is fit 4-5-1 might work again but at the moment 4-4-2 is definitely the way to go rafa is too bloody minded to change and ridiculously defensive. With 4-4-2 could play Gk-reina RB-johnson LB-aurelio CB-carragher CB-agger CM-mascherano CM-gerrard LM-benayoun RM-babel CF-torres CF-nemeth not a ineffective brazilian midfielder in sight actual pace and invention on the flanks with yossi on the left and babel on the right defenders being allowed to just defend and get forward selectively and with a quality back up in every position Gk-cavalieri RB-darby LB-insua CB-skrtel CB-ayala CM-spearing CM-aquilani LM-riera RM-el zhar CF-ngog CF-kuyt
