But at least Liverpool have signed 16-year-old Benfica “wonderkid” Toni Brito Sa, who sounds like he might run into a series of amusing misunderstandings if he was ever asked to give his name during a parade drill by Windsor Davies playing a bumptious Army sergeant in a much-loved but still strangely unfunny 1970s Saturday night sitcom. (Guardian)
Benfica have accepted Liverpool’s offer of £290,000 for one of the most highly-rated youngsters in Portugal. (Various)
Rafa continues to build wisely for the future and at the same time manages to make his transfer budget last that little bit longer. Our Gaffer is now well and truly planning for the future in a manner similar to the way Arsene has been doing at Arsenal for a decade plus.
He has of course been dubbed the “Next Cristiano Ronaldo” but whether that was at the behest of the player’s agent is open to debate.
Obviously not much is known about this teenage but Chelsea were chasing him pretty hard until we managed to edge them to his signature.

good i guess…pity its not english talent tho
jimmyk - October 9th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
talent is nothing, ideally we want to see these players really break into the 1st team proper, if not, at least a decent profit…i would prefer them grow into our regulars though.

Build him up, then let him go to Leicester for 500k. Well ace.
anonymous - October 9th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
Look, I love lfc but I am sick of us signing so-called wonderkids, not 1 wonderkid has come through the ranks in Rafa’s reign so far. At 290K, I suppose this guy is worth a chance but the phrase “the New Messi, Ronaldo, Kaka etc” is getting realy boring at this stage.

Liverpool’s youth policy isnt even in the same league as Arsenal’s.
anonymous - October 9th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
I think buying him at this age will help with the new 6 plus five rule. By the time he matures the rule might favour his squad addtion. Am I right or wrong?
anonymous - October 9th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Insua ?
anonymous - October 9th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
he wont develop in to anything with liverpool, every prospect they buy to ‘develop’ gets nowhere other than a seat on the bench or a loan…. ronaldo should thank his lucky stars he never came to liverpool otherwise he would be playing at olymipinkos now.
isaac hunt - October 9th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
so do you not think ronaldo would have been as good if he played for us? are you for real?
anonymous - October 9th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Liverpools youth policy isnt in the same league as Arsenals???
That is spouted by a complete idiot!!
Arsene Wenger stole the march on the other teams by seeing the importance of youth development and he is reaping the rewards. However, most of the wonder kids have actually cost them £5 / £10 million quid.
The ones that have come through that werent that expensive are the ones that they signed as 14 and 15 year olds and have developed well.
Over the last 2 / 3 seasons, Liverpool have been doing exactly this with the likes of Pacheco etc.. They havent broken through as they are only just nearing the level where they are ready.
They will break through in the next couple of seasons.
Other than the bloke above, most seem to forget Insua, who is a 1st choice and is also getting his 1st full Argentina cap, tomorrow.
Wiltshire and alot of the arsenal kids, get rolled out for cup games and cameos, but Insua starts most weeks.
Utd have the twin full backs who are “the next big thing” ?? They dont get in every week!!
But now people will start saying its due to Utd’s squad being so strong and other bull. Everything Liverpool do, seems to be the wrong thing in the eyes of the press.
Anyway.. to get a kid good enough to start in 1-2 years of arrival, you pay £5-10m and if he is younger or a little further away, you pay less but have to wait longer.
This is why Liverpool are buying up all of the top kids… we will just have to wait..

And before anyone says… I am not having a dig at Arsenal as they have clearly done it the best and Wenger saw that it needed doing well before the other teams, so its a compliment.
But others are now doing it and will produce similar results in the years to come

That is absolute crap. Insua is a regular, Plessis has broken through and El Zhar has also broken through, he is injured at the moment. Not only do we have the above mentioned players, that being Ngog, Nemeth, Bouzanis, Pacheco, Irwin, Darby, we also have some other top talent, Bruna, who they named the Messi of Madrid, we also have the young Finn Lauri Dalla Valle, who was a part of the Inter Milan youth setup. We also have Paul Ince’s son Thomas who is highly rated. A lot of people seem to forget that Rafa started his coaching career at Real Madrid for the youth side, so he knows all about the youth setup. People are saying we don’t need young talent, we need big stars now. We have big stars now, we do need to look to our future and it will also save us a lot of money, buying them now, rather than buying them when they are already established.
saif - October 10th, 2009 at 12:38 am
With Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdullah al–Saud meeting with George Gillett to buy his shares of Liverpool next Wednesday, Rafa has already drawn up a list of who he wants in and who he wants out. In: –Eduardo Salvio 15m –Matias de Federico –swap Lucas Leiva –Jeremy Toulalan 23m –Steven Defour 12m –Ashley Young 28m –Per Mertesacker 17m –Goran Pandev 5m or pre contract –Carlos Puyol pre contract Out: –Javier Mascherano 36m Inter Milan –Andrea Dossena 5m Palermo –Philipp Degen 2m Almeria –Sotirios Kyrgiakos 2m Larissa –Lucas Leiva swap –Martin Skrtel 10m Wolfsburg BIG WINTER FOR LIVERPOOL
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 1:57 am
i think ’saif’ is too busy playing fantasy football manager on his computer if he thinks anything like that list of names will be anywhere near liverpool. unfortunately i dont think the sale of half or any of the club will go through in the short term. the americand are there till they can make as money out of the club as possible and that wont be till the world economy picks upagain……god how i hope i am wrong
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 3:07 am
why would you want to sell skrtel the punisher
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 4:13 am
sorry saif i know ur a liverpool supporter like me but srsly…R U ON CRACK!!!?…if it was that easy then benitez would just say “i want ronaldo and messi on the wings with a kaka gerrard midfield and casillas in goal with reina at the same time. i also want the bernebau (spelt wrong i know) cut up and moved to liverpool in time for christmas, oh and i also want the girls from the playboy mansion to give inspirational half time team talks”.
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 5:06 am
we’ve heard it all before…the next zidane, the next viera, the next ronaldo, maradona etc etc
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 7:13 am
insua is one of them… have faith guys
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 8:04 am
paul anderson, jack hobbs, paletta, adam hammill etc , rafa’s 1st generation of wonderkids, where are they now?
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 9:02 am
Saif I would rather have David Silva than Ashley Young as he would cost about the same and is left footed, better crosser and more consistent.
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 9:03 am
Oh and he has better skill in my opinion
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 10:00 am
dont forget jay spearing who started his first game a couple of weeks ago and has also been staring on the bench
almost forgot he has played against real madrid for gods sake
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 10:03 am
whoever says liverpool have a crap youth system know nothing we have these coming through:
ayala
kelly
dalle valle
el zhar
plessis
insua
spearing
pacheco
nemeth
simon
darby
flora
and we have just signed him and ngoo who both sound decent
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 10:04 am
Dont know if people know this, but just to justify that at least Rafa is trying to buy and bring through quality youngsters…Nemeth (who we signed alost 3yrs ago) is currently lighting up the U-20’s World Cup…Hungary beat Italy 3-2 aet in the Q-Finals Yesterday…Nemeth won the penalty for the first goal and then bagged a couple for himself…so that is 3goals in 3games for him if im not mistaken….
just to point out to those who dont take such competitions seriously, previous Golden boot winners of this event include;
Sergio Aguero, Lionel Messi, Davor Suker…amongst others…
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 10:22 am
Amoo
Pacheco
Spearing
Kelly
Ayala
Nemeth
Will all make it to the first team in some capacity over the next 2 years. I’d say that’s not bad.
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 10:35 am
i say liverpool are doomed
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 11:12 am
we should just buy aguero and young
RaNE - October 10th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
saif why would liverpool sell skrtle
Retryboy - October 10th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Everybody raves about arsenal’s youth system but Wenger has had a lot longer than rafa who has revolutionised our academy insua, nemeth, ayala, darby, spearing, el zhar and ngog are all ready to be key members of the first team squad now and a clear out of the likes of degen, kyrgiakos, dossena, lucas, voronin, would allow them to come through having a manager that cares as much for the future of the club as for immediate success is gr8 and with the likes of pacheco, amoo, kelly, irwin, ngoo, dalle-valle, ecclestone all to come through in the next couple of years our young players have never been better. Saif know you are only young but its really annoying that even on an article about rafa buying youth and ppl talking about our young talent you continue to want liverpool to become another man city or chelsea and buy our success with your fantasy football lists hope we never go down those roads
RaNE - October 10th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
was silva in rafas youth academy in valencia?
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 5:20 pm
even if he is the next ron our youth system will no doubt rid him of confidence and ruin him. none of our youngsters look like they have any self belief compared to united ego crazy kids like macheda welbeck etc.
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
these batch ov kids r different
benitez never looked at kids before
rafa insted buys the crapy average shitty players e.g luca nunez gonzalez
anyway the guy hu natures fabregas iniesta xavi etc
is at liverpool wot more du u want
anonymous - October 10th, 2009 at 6:55 pm
u no if all these youngster in england turn out to be the best in world wot r real madrid ganna do
start a galacticos 3
anonymous - October 11th, 2009 at 2:10 am
Is anyone else a bit worried by Rafa’s desire to be surrounded by 16 year old boys? we’ve signed loads so far this season!
anonymous - October 11th, 2009 at 8:03 am
What bothers me is these articles. With these fruitcake owners & capped no thrills budget how the hell do we get any NOW superstars. Its a little unfair to rate these youngsters with Ronaldo ,Henry ect- they are hopefully gonna have there own personal skills & playing styles but at least let them prove it in the 1st grade squads before giving these lofty comparisons- i love LFC but lets try keep it real. All i really want right now is Aquilani to get on the pitch & show us some magic!!
anonymous - October 11th, 2009 at 9:07 am
Nani was dubbed the next Cristiano Ronaldo remember. Don’t get too excited Liverpool fans…
anonymous - October 11th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

so u tryna say liverpool youth academy is shit ?
have u forgotten about gerrard?
the best midfielder in the world
?
RaNE - October 11th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
and carragher one of the best defenders in the world
RaNE - October 11th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
why did we get rid of leto that guy was amazing he could of replaced riera on the wing
Retryboy - October 12th, 2009 at 1:43 am
Leto was work permit issues from the start was one of the handful of rafa’s never seen anything in even at reserve level will wait and see on that one tho but his signings are his strengths particullarly the young players its the progression into the first team that he has to work on
anonymous - October 12th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Carragher one of the best defenders in the world- ya kidden me??Plays with great heart & a proud Liverpool man but lacks pace, constantly out of position from set plays-average at best in the air, not a super attacking player- how is he 1 of the best fullbacks in the world???Gerard-midfield- yes ………;.
anonymous - October 12th, 2009 at 2:14 pm
people forgetting the likes of McMannan, Fowler, Owen the above 2 mentioned Carragher and Gerrard, obviously all the youths coming up at the minute. We definately do not have a bad youth system.
