The Great Free Transfer Arsenal Should Complete: Carles Puyol
by Alan Smith's Forehead on October 12th, 2009 317 words | 9 commentsA soon to be out of contract player who could be a very wise addition to the Gunners squad.
Barcelona have shown very little respect for our great club in their dogged and annoying pursuit of their former youth team player and current Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas and with that in mind a move for one of their soon to be out of contract stars would be an intelligent signing and as well as a big ‘up yours’ to the Catalan side for good measure.
31 year old centre back Carles Puyol has of course done it all in his decade plus at the heart of the Barcelona defence but recent rumours have suggested that he may well be looking for a new challenge and that his boss Pepe Guardiola is looking to younger alternatives to the shaggy haired defender.
Arsene obviously has a policy of short term contracts for players over 30, a policy that I agree with, and I am sure that if Wenger approached Puyol about coming to the Emirates on a yearly rolling contract then he would surely consider it.
A move to the Premier League may well appeal to a player who has played his entire career in Spain and of course he may be able to collect a pretty penny given that we wouldn’t have to spend a single penny on his move from the Nou Camp. Its a deal that could also help the younger players in our set-up who could learn a lot from the veteran.
He may look like an ungainly player, but his determined attitude and direct approach has led him to winning major honours that include a pair of Champions League winners medals, something the rest of our squad would dearly love to experience.
Carles Puyol is a potentially great free transfer who could be of great benefit to the club as a whole.

Get real. Spain’s taxes are so much lower than England’s for the top footballers, you’d have to pay Puyol an outrageous wage so he could take home as much as he was at Barcelona, and Wenger will never do that and through the salary structure for the club out the window. Puyol will want 100k+ a week to come… not even Cesc gets that much.
Dream on – Puyol is going to another Spanish team or Italy.

He should be signed by Blackburn instead. Sam Allardyce works best with old players.
At arsenal we nature them and right now we have the best mix in defence that once it gels it will be the heartbeat of defences in Europe
