Sunderland have signed midfielder Boudewijn Zenden until the end of the season, and have an option to keep the Dutch international for a further year.
As a free agent, Zenden, who had been training with Sunderland after his deal with Marseille expired, was able to join outside of the transfer window.
The 33-year-old could make his debut on Saturday against former club Liverpool.
“His performances in training persuaded me that he has a valuable role to play this season,” said manager Steve Bruce.
“It was immediately obvious that he is still supremely fit and the move happened fairly quickly.
“He brings international class, a steadying influence and a wide breadth of experience.
“His career is testament to his quality and he gives us more depth in central midfield which is a vital position.” (BBC Sport)
This strikes me as a damn good bit of business. Steve Bruce has landed himself a vastly experienced talented creative midfielder who although 33, is still able to make an impact as evidenced by the good season he had last term at Marseille when he helped the French club to within 90 minutes of landing the domestic title. Make no mistake Bolo was at his peak a damn fine player who in his lengthy career has won silverware in three countries including a La Liga title with Barcelona.
With six seasons of Premier League football under his belt he should be able to fit in fairly smoothly but I would imagine that he will at first be something of a bit part player but the adaptable attacker will be a useful addition to the Black Cats side.

As a Liverpool fan when I think back, he must be up there with the most over-hyped wastes of space ever to wear our shirt – The guy was terrible for us!! He could just be another player with anti- Liverpool-Sydrome though and play awesome before and after his spell with our club!! Harry Kewell, Momo Sissoko, Fernando Morientes, Andriy Voronin (Loan), Djibril Cisse – to name but a few

He looked like his best years were behind him at liverpool and that was a while ago. He always battles and is actually a very physical player with a good, neat short range passing game its his pace that lets him down and the french league is no comparison to the epl. Bruce obviously feels a bit of experience is needed in a young squad probably just as much a move for the balance of the dressing room as on the pitch.

Kewel would have been better if not injured moron!
Is it his fault, no. Look at him now

If Kewell played for Liverpool now he would be dominating.
