JOHANNESBURG – South African traditional leaders plan to perform ritual animal slaughters to bless stadiums for the 2010 World Cup tournament ahead of the start of the showcase event next June, they said on Friday.
Zolani Mkiva, chairman of the Makhonya Royal Trust, a grouping responsible for co-ordinating cultural activities, said the tournament, the first to be held in Africa, needed to be blessed in true “African style”.
“We must have a cultural ceremony of some sort, where we are going to slaughter a beast (cow),” said Mkiva.
“We sacrifice the cow for this great achievement and we call on our ancestors to bless, to grace, to ensure that all goes well. It’s all about calling for the divinity to prevail for a fantastic atmosphere.”
South Africa is set to host the World Cup – the world’s most watched sports spectacle – in less than eight months, with the tournament expected to attract about 500,000 foreign tourists.
Mkiva said the Trust has sent letters to the chief executive and chairman of the World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC), proposing traditional ceremonies to be performed at each of the 10 stadiums that are going to be used for the event.
The officials have yet to respond to the request. (Four Four Two)
Well that will make a difference from the usual opening ceremony!

Ah yes just what we need. As a South African myself I should note that I do not have a pet lion, my home is in fact made out of bricks and not straw, and yes I do have electricity.

How medieval is this? Seriously if its african I dont trust this ritual to not be some voodoo hex, take out all teams apart from south africa. Its not as if south africa hasnt done the similar in the past, in a rugby world cup they poisoned the breakfast of the kiwi team so that the south africans could win; which they did.

Tough call people’s beliefs against animal rights don’t believe in interfering in other cultures belief sets even if they are morally objectional to us.

This is precisely why I (sarcastically) said that this is exactly what my country needs. The rest of the seriously needs to just deal with the fact that if you’re coming to Africa then you’re coming to Africa. You are not coming to a Euro-Clone. We do things differently here and if you have a problem with that, then that’s fine, but we don’t care!
I am part of the white (and much more European) minority of the country and yet I love it here, and honestly there is no other place I would rather live, and I’ve been to a lot of other countries.
As a side note, I’ve always hated the vuvuzela but the fact that the rest of the world had the nerve to insist that we ban them to cater for their tastes has made me a fan. Long Live The Vuvuzela!

I slaughter a cow before every England match for good luck, if it works it works, if it don’t you don’t lose anything

FYI cows were also slaughtered before building on the stadia commenced.
This is the African way. Some of us don’t like it, but we’re told to lump it.

If someone said we will say prayer and call on Jesus we would all say that is ok but when it come to being culturally competent then the world jumps up and down. I would suggest that if people are so against the sacrifice of the cow then they never eat another piece of beef, pork or any other animal because animals are killed everyday for something less important. Remember in the old testament animals where given to God in the same way to thank God and to obtain a blessing. I believe Jews still follow the Old Testament…..mmmmm
