Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is pondering a move for Taylor.
The left-sided midfielder has been mentioned as an outside bet for a place in England’s World Cup squad and admits he is playing the best football of his career.
Taylor’s arrival at Anfield would help Benitez offset the threat of UEFA’s foreign quota plans for the Champions League. (The People)
Now don’t get me wrong, I think that Matt Taylor is a quality player but for some reason I simply can not picture him in a Liverpool shirt. I know this isn’t much of a reason to think that something won’t happen, but hell this speculation has been started by The People so therefore unlikely to have a shred of truth to it anyway.
The 27 year old has real talent and was always knocking in superb strikes whilst at Portsmouth and just last term weighed in with an impressive ten goals from the midfield for Bolton. The left sided player is probably overdue an England call up and whilst he always impresses me when I see him in action I am not sure he is the answer to our left sided conundrum.
Albert Riera and Ryan Babel haven’t quite shown what they are capable of and Yossi Benayoun can fill in on the left, in fact the Israeli can do a good job anywhere on the field of play. Our wide players are on occasions players who fall between two stalls. Dirk Kuyt offers great determination and a good goals return but is not your typical out and out winger but it seems that Rafa likes it that way, and if everyone plays consistently in their positions its not really an issue.
The jury is still very much out on Albert and Ryan so perhaps an addition to keep them on their toes wouldn’t be a bad thing but Taylor isn’t going to want to join a club where he won’t get a regular start.

I know what you mean. Yossi is more suited to a floating role. Taylor is a very underrated player and could be a useful addition to the squad.
anonymous - October 26th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
I think Rafa should look for out and out wide players or wingers to add to the squad. This would bring some much needed width to our team, something that has been lacking for some time now.
And why does he alsways look at the left side and never the right??

Matt Taylor? Why doesn’t Rafa consider a bid for Ronaldinho?
anonymous - October 26th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
with same money we can get adam johson..
younger, better, and has more potential than taylor..
dave - October 26th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
johnson would be better, taylor no better than aurelio, but we do need english players.
Aquaman - October 26th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
To the anon above. Um, well, because AC just lost Kaka and therefore actually need the old timer.
For that price I’d snap him up in a heartbeat.

Dave you are right about one thing the only reason Rafa will go for him is because he is english and more suitable for the champions league sqad

Pete

id like to add as liverpool fan from pompey, i have admired matt taylor when he was down here, the pompey fans loved him, i wanted raffer to get him when he went to bolton, who knows we could of got him for 4mil and he might have got us the extra points we needed to win the title.we would have had the extra money to get gareth barry from the winnings etc.
now we pay 7mil for him and hes a year older. would still have him like a shot.

Good Evening Aquaman.
Yawnnnnn, Guest the jan’ tranfer window is coming up
Aquaman - October 26th, 2009 at 9:24 pm
Evening Donavan, (or should I say night).
Yeah, as always, mountains of salt should be taken with all transfer rumors. Especially since I don’t see us spending terribly much. Unless we sell first. Could be seeing the back of Dossena and Riera, which would be very bleak. I reckon Dossena just needs time and he’ll become come right (like Yossi), but with Insua doing so well we may have to bid the Italian fair well in favor of a left winger (though Fabio may do for a while). If we do get a left winger, then I expect to see Babel on his way as well.

we should get the welsh man Gareth Frank Bale from tottenham even though he is a LB i think he is good enough to play as a left winger and he has a wicked free kick just like gerrard or aurelio and he is only 20 years old. soo if we are going to spend on someone i prefer him for a long term contract. this kid is gonne be one of the best in the coming years

Would definitely rather have adam johnson would probably cost a bit more but be worth it
Scouse Magic - October 27th, 2009 at 8:48 am
No. Sell Dossena, Riera, Babel, Degen, Voronin (Approx £30M) Get Adam Johnson £3M-£5M (Either Wing), Jose Antonio Reyes (Left Wing or Striker) £3M-£7M.
To cover right back we’ve got Darby or Kelly, Left wing we would have either of these signings, right wing we would have Johnson or Beni, Striker we’d have Torres, Ngog and Reyes.
This wouldn’t upset the balance of the team nor would it take them anytime to settle in having both played in the Prem league, plus it would leave us more money in the kitty to spend at the end of the season to bring in some REAL quality.

I’ve always thought he was underrated and i think he would be pretty decent for us. However I’m exactly like Donavan Ried when it comes to transfers and thats not paying that much attention to rumorus until the transfer windows or close to one.
Donavan it makes a change us agreeing on something for a change ha! in reference on our debates on Rafa. But i guess we respect each other on our views on everything

Matty Taylor is a quality player…scores great goals and is a typical english midfielder, not much flare but will battle it out and get back to help the defence.
i would have taylor over johnson any day, more experience .. johnson is jus a talent that might be something.
Retryboy - October 27th, 2009 at 1:05 pm
Isn’t that why we should go for johnson instead though anon? When aquilani and benayoun are both fit they both have to start so this is a buy to be a back up to the left midfield position that shows as well with only looking to spend £7 million would rather have someone with massive potential in that case
anonymous - October 27th, 2009 at 1:51 pm
I dont think our main concern is on the wing we have Babel, Kuyt, Riera, Yossi and auralio. Our main concern is a striker. We should have got owen or huntelaar. If we are going to get a winger, get someone with real quality li Ashley Young, yea we will have to spend £20m+ on him but he would assure class. We just need the owners to spend. Or even Milner. they are both young and English(and expensive).
anonymous - October 27th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Agbonlahor is also class if we need an English Striker. He gives us the option of real pace, in the boring games when all the other team are in their own half defending we need that explosievness. For the wing what about Matias di Federico. He was linked with liverpool in the summer for just £4m.
Retryboy - October 27th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
Babel and riera actually cost the same amount as ashley young and milner. Still would like to see babel starting on the right sure he would become a £20million player with yossi and aquilani to fit in and aurelio looking really good on the left of midfield think we can afford to lose riera and still have plenty of options would look at getting a top class left back and use insua as back up he isn’t quite the finished article yet.
anonymous - October 27th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
retry boy: liverpool dont need anymore prospects they need players who can deliver and matt taylor knows the league well, is experienced and would give good performances. adam johnson is a player they certainly do not need, another young player who mite not quite hack it at top level
Retryboy - October 27th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
Don’t think we have any problem in that area at all benayoun, aurelio, riera don’t rate taylor as better than any of them we haven’t got a young prospect on the left though still think the money would be better spent elsewhere if we sold dossena, riera a world class left back would improve the team more.
Warren Bloggs - October 27th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
Personally, i would welcome Taylor but only as back-up and not as a first choice signing. He can play both Left wing and left back so he would merely be a better Aurelio. I still think Riera has something to offer the club he just needs more confidence so he can gain momentum. I would sell Babel, Degen, Voronin and Dossena in either the January or Summer transfer window. Its highly unlikely we will sign alot of players in the Winter transfer window. However, Taylor would be welcome althouugh i would prefer someone like Ashley Young or Adam Johnson as long term replacements.
