Real Madrid are lining up Rafa Benitez as their next manager after giving Manuel Pellegrini two games to save his job.
The Spanish giants have won just one of their last five games and suffered the humiliation of a 4-0 defeat by third division Alcorcon in the Cup on Tuesday night.
Madrid considered sacking Pellegrini straight after the latest debacle, but will give him a chance to turn things around against Getafe on Saturday and at AC Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday.
The decision gives Madrid time to probe possible successors and Liverpool boss Benitez is said to be on the short list.
A host of out-of-work coaches are also being considered, but Madrid want to know if Benitez’s commitment to Liverpool has been shaken by the ongoing boardroom dispute between the club’s American owners. (Daily Mail)
Interesting. But could it really happen? I can’t see Rafa leaving the club but given the way he has been treated by our owners I wouldn’t blame him if he did. He is still the right man for the job and I think 95% of Liverpool fans still back him.
Obviously a move to the Bernabeu is a dangerous one for any boss to take with the La Liga club infamously firing bosses at will. It is surely to early for the club to be considering sacking Manuel Pellegrini, after all he has actually done pretty well up until that embarrassing cup defeat.
This one could rumble on and on!

i would say no players from liverpool would go there.
torres=loyal to atletico
gerrard maybe would go but i can only see him playing for liverpool in his life.
they are our 2 world class players and to be honest he could get better players than the rest of our squad.

He should take it because after this season he wont work again! Finishing 9th in the leauge and not getting past the 1st stage of the CL is some acheavement!

anonymous - October 30th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
RAFA NEVER LEAVE POOL. BECAUSE ALL FORMER COACHES ARE SACKED AFTER THE 1st or the 2nd year. THIS ISNT A JOB FOR A LONG TERM . REAL BEST COACH WAS VICENTE DEL BOSQUE HE WIN EVERYTHING WITH THE TEAM. AND THE COACHES AFTER HIM WAS KICKED ALL AFTER THE 1st season or the 2nd season..
Retryboy - October 30th, 2009 at 6:07 pm
Have been torn by rafa for ages thought he was too negative before the Sunderland game and then he brought out the most negative formation i had ever seen. Have seen dodgy tactics, crazy decisions, substititutions too many players he has failed to get the best out of and my main gripe a ridiculously huge squad blocking the progress of youngsters with quantity ahead of quality. On the other hand
I really rate his signings, he has transformed the club at all levels, his record is really good and now he has ditched the wing back experiment letting defenders defend, forwards attack, kelly got his chance in the champions league and mainly as a person he is a great man who lives and breathes liverpool and is trying to build for the future even when the pressure is on. So i would be over the moon to be proved wrong on all the negative points and will happily eat humble pie will also say that i regret calling for him to be sacked after porto and did go back on that way before the united game and whilst still not convinced by him will back him whilst in charge. my main thing i want to see is all the young talent fulfilling their awesome potential i don’t want to see us buy success like city and chelsea

What would be the point spending years at Liverpool building a squad just to leave them for Madrid. I’m sure Alonso would love a re-union

Talk about the beauty of hindsight. This guys got foresight. What a cock!!
The Real madrid job is a poison chalis if ever there was one. I actually believe that Rafa Benitez would do very well there but I don’t believe that he will be going there yet. I really believe that he loves Liverpool and his work is not yet done at the club and one thing that you can definately say about our Mr Benitez is that is aint no quitter.

Evening donovan… I am sure like me you would love to be proved wrong too…Mark g what even the still not convinced by him bit lol…Saif if the yanks aren’t behind him they would love it saving them a fortune in compensation and not looking like the bad guys to the fans. what manager would want to go to real? if you lose a few games your jobs on the line, high pressure job with a p45 waiting round the corner!!
Real madrid are like the harlem globetrotters….Do they have any youngsters coming thru the ranks? there is no structure to the club, its buy who ever we want when we want. And still they aint won f***k all!!!
Throwing money at players don’t win you a title or respect.

1. You have a valid point. Very few would go there unless they are paid heaps and thrown into the contract a massive bumper pay if they are dismissed prematurely.
2. Why would Rafa go there? Everybody may not like him in Liverpool but he is not accountable to them. Regardless of what some of the senseless contributors on this site who are clearly into Rafa bashing, they don’t determine what happens to Liverpool. The chairman, owners, ex Legend (Dalglish) and the players have declared their support. Quite clearly he is trying to build something for the future with limited resources. It looks like he is here for the long haul especially just having signed a new improved contract recently.
3. Real Madrid will still not win anything despite Ronaldo, Kaka and company in the side. Barca will out run them and they will not win the Champions League either. My prediction is that Perez will spend bigger and quite possibly his next target would be Gerrard.
4. Hey…anonymous – Oct 31st, 1.10am, you should officially sign in. Sounds like you have useful ideas and you are able to contribute constructively to the discussion here.

so much resemblance can be seeing in the coaching of rafa and capello.when cappello took charge of real seconf time he bought in 2 thugs in the form of m.diarra and emerson ,2 defensive minded players meanwhile rafa played xabi and mascherano where xabi was a luxury kind of player, now instead of xabi we will use lucas or aquilani. Both coaches like players who are professionals and workoholic beckham and kuyt and rafa plays with babel on minimal occations and cappello played with robhinho on minimum occations since both loose the ball for trickery
anonymous - October 31st, 2009 at 7:30 am
time to go rafa. bye bye
anonymous - October 31st, 2009 at 9:09 am
he would immediately sign Lucas Leiva, Emiliano Insua,Nabil El Zhar, thats what will Real Madrid fans wait from Benitez.

That would be the same Liverpool that beat Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City, Tottenham and Everton in the league table last year and took it to the wire against Man U
Yawn Yawn

Not many options in midfield today would like to see Gk-reina RB-darby LB-insua CB-carragher CB-agger CM-mascherano CM-lucas ACM-benayoun LM-aurelio CF-torres RM-kuyt think that will be the team he plays except degen for darby i personally rate darby a lot higher particularly defensively we should still have too much for fulham hopefully aquilani is well enough for a place on the bench
saif - October 31st, 2009 at 3:47 pm
squad to face fulham Reina, Insua, Degen, Carragher, Kyrgiakos, Kuyt, Benayoun, Mascherano, Lucas, Voronin, Torres. Subs: Gulacsi, Babel, Spearing, Plessis, Dossena, Eccleston, Ayala.
Retryboy - October 31st, 2009 at 4:09 pm
Good seeing rafa going to 4-4-2 with the injuries showing flexibility crazy amount of injuries we have! Good seeing the young players on the bench too ayala, gulacsi, ecclestone, spearing. Lots gonna rely on voronin dropping deep and creating. Also benayouns creativity
Retryboy - October 31st, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Would prefer the younger players like darby, ayala, pacheco for degen, kyrgiakos, voronin though
Retryboy - October 31st, 2009 at 4:44 pm
Get in there torres!! Come on lads!!
anonymous - October 31st, 2009 at 5:42 pm
Can anything go right? Fuk sake Rafa why would u take of Torres and Benny? Carra and degen sent off.
Red_Phoenix - October 31st, 2009 at 5:45 pm
All that good work against Man U last week spectacularly undone today. Well done Rafa for picking such a STUPID team. Ref didn’t do us a favour either.
Retryboy - October 31st, 2009 at 5:52 pm
He just proves he doesn’t care about the title guarantee all those missing 2day miraculously recover on wednesday and we have better youngsters than the players he picks thats whats so annoying how many times has voronin got to prove he isn’t good enough
anonymous - October 31st, 2009 at 6:41 pm
that is what that can be done with paper thin squad
anonymous - November 1st, 2009 at 12:32 pm
we need a squad like man utds…e.g a few strikers that are capable of scoring goals rather than just torres on his own…offload babel and dossena for about 15m combined and put it towards another striker…we hav enuf cover in defence. Degen isnt a bad player at all….almost like Johnson but not quite as good
anonymous - November 1st, 2009 at 1:30 pm
I think Rafa should take the madrid job and go. Liverpool needs a coach with an attacking rather than a defensive mindset. Rafa s ideas and tactics are old and obsolete and should stop causing us great pains by his formation.Kuyt has no business in the team, yet he plays all the time because Rafa says he can defend well !. Cara is fast loosing steam and pace.Benayoun is untilised and a couple of other youngsters.Rafa will not lead liverpool to the next level. The time to go is NOW!
anonymous - November 3rd, 2009 at 3:05 pm
Heres an idea. One of rafs many reasons for lack of success is he doesnt have the money of the remaining big 4 clubs so to speak. While most of us non scousers think as a manager hes tripe and that success i brought on by gerrard and carragers liverpool blood and the drive and determination for their team to be sucessful. Let him go to Madrid help him out the door and lets see how he can manage with all the money in the world at his diposal. £250 mil in 5 years or £250mil in one transfer window.
