Andrea Dossena’s agent has admitted the Liverpool defender has attracted interest from Italian club Napoli.
The Reds defender has only made one substitute appearance in the Premier League so far this season and is finding it difficult to prove his worth to manager Rafa Benitez.
With Napoli looking to bolster their defence during the January transfer window, Dossena’s agent Roberto La Florio thinks the left-back may want to move to ensure a place in the Italy squad for next year’s World Cup.
“It is clear that in January Napoli will sign new players, especially in the role of Dossena,” said La Florio.
“We’ll see in January if there are opportunities to return to Italy and play – we are interested because Dossena wants to go to the World Cup.
“Napoli is the Italian team that has pushed most for Dossena and according to me it would be the perfect solution for him.”
The 28-year-old became the first Italian player to play for Liverpool when he signed at Anfield for £7million in July last year.
Dossena is currently recovering from a muscle injury but may make the bench for the Reds’ UEFA Champions League trip to Lyon on Wednesday. (Sky Sports)
I am a funny feeling this deal will be done in January. Andrea Dossena is clearly not really part of Rafa’s plans and as such would surely be better for us to cash in on the Italian international sooner rather than later. With Emiliano Insua and Fabio Aurelio in situ at the left back slot, we can probably afford to allow Andrea to return home.

Yeah we do have better options in both LB and LM and he has his world cup place to consider and thanks to his couple of sublime goals esp against the scum wish him well. Thought we might have to take a bit more of a hit on the fee after his injuries so if we can get £6m think its a result

Would have like to see him play on the left side of midfield. Felt he was not really given the chance to shine, and when he was gaols against Real and Man Utd ….. Thank you Andrea Dossena

Kop King
I think he is another quality player who couldn’t fit into the rafa mould adios.

To andrea dossena, though you are not the right player for liverpool, you have proved over and over again that you dont give up and you have quality for the italian league. Thank you for everything and those wonderful two goals against the scums and real madrid. You beat van der sar(european keeper of the year) and iker casillas(worlds best keeper) with sublime finishes. You will always be a hero. I wish u well.

Great goals against Real & Man united, he is an ok player but he just cant get used to the speed of the premiership, hopefully he can rekindle his career back in italy and become a top class defender after his exp in the prem

Dossena strikes me as a player who just needs a bit more time. I reckon that he’ll come right soon. He’ll show everyone his quality just like Yossi has. We saw how good he was in attack when he came on against Madrid and Man U. I wouldn’t be surprised if he turns out to be similar to Johnson. I hope he doesn’t leave (stone me).

I’m agreeing with Aquaman i don;t wat to see him go as he is a great player but never gives a chance to rpove his orth although he done well against Real and Man utd he still doesn’t get a looking
whoever says he needs to be sold are just completely mental as this guy is pretty decent when he actually plays

Does sound like it from the noises his agent has made for a while. Its the world cup coming up so best for the player and think cover for gerrard and aquilani has to be priority people go on about cover for torres no good without creativity in the middle and ngog hasn’t had a gerrard or aquilani in the middle putting him through yet.
Ryan Babel - November 3rd, 2009 at 10:45 pm
I THINK HE COULD STILL BE OK IF WE PLAYED HIM @ Lw. BUT YH SWAP HIM +10M FOR LAVEZZI!!!!!

Good Point Retryboy. Personally I live in hope that this will be the last time that Aquilani and Gerrard are injured at the same time. They are great cover for one another and Yossi is there as well. With Lucas to cover Masch, I think we may be fine.
Personally I’d like another winger to set Yossi free. Actually let me think about this in more detail. I’ll exclude youngsters as no one can guarantee that they will be suitable cover.
Goalkeepers: Pepe Reina, Diego Cavalieri.
No problems I can see.
Right Back: Johnson, Carra, Degen
Still don’t think Degen is as bad as everyone makes out. More quality would be good but fine for now
Center Back: Carra, Agger, Skrtel, Barbarian (can’t spell his name)
I’m still undecided about the barbarian, but if he’s at least decent then we’ve got this covered until he retires, by which time we should have a youngster or two to take his place.
Left Back: Aurelio, Insua, Dossena
Seems good to me. Aurelio has been dodgy recently but he’s a classy player. Insua will just get better, and Dossena will come good eventually (I’m sure of it!).
Defensive Midfield: Masch, Lucas
2 players for 1 position. Good enough for me.
Providing Midfield: Gerrard, Aquilani
Can’t really judge Aquilani yet, but on the price tags this should be world class.
Left Wing: Riera, Babel, Yossi, (maybe Aurelio)
Riera pops in and out, Babel is unimpressive, and Yossi would be better used elsewhere. My biggest concern lies here. I think Aurelio should only play here in emergencies but its nice to have him as backup.
Right Wing: Kuyt, Yossi, El Zhar
Kuyt is an enigma. He shouldn’t be as good as he is. Yossi speaks for himself. El Zhar hasn’t convinced me yet. More quality would be nice here.
Gerrard Hole: Gerrard, Aquilani, Yossi
Here’s another problem. Gerrard and Aquliani would obviously vie for first choice but if one is injured, then Yossi would come in which leaves the right a bit stretched. Another right winger would solve this nicely. “Babel!” I hear you scream? Not for my money.
Striker: That Nando Guy, N’Gog
2 players for one position. Not bad, but if Gin & Tonic are injured together then there’s real problems.
In summary: Unsurprisingly I’d say our three biggest concerns are: Left Wing, Right Wing, and Striker in that order.
I mentioned a while ago that we’ll start building the squad in the next few years and I haven’t been crucified for it yet. So let me re-raise the issue and explain myself (I just love being insulted it seems).
In Rafa’s first three years he did a lot of recycling. Selling off players who shouldn’t ever have been here and buying similarly priced replacements so that he could begin molding the squad to work his way. We saw Cisse, Bellamy and Crouch enter during this period.
The next two years were the beginning of Rafa’s fine tuning years. Again Rafa recycled players but now he was recycling players from his own squad. He now knew his team well enough to judge where the weaknesses were. Now Rafa started adding quality. We saw Cisse, Bellamy and Crouch leave again but in their places came Torres, Mascherano and Robbie Keane. The fact that only one of these three failed is a pretty good return I think.
This year we have started the third era of Rafa’s management. This was sparked by the signing of his new contract and the committing of so many of his important players to long term contracts. This last transfer window has been completely different to any Rafa has had before. He bought 2 players worth over a million, and both of them were of the highest quality. None of the 50/50 buys like Riera, Dossena and the like. Only high quality. Granted we lost Alonso in the process, but nothing lasts forever and we got a good price.
Notice as well that there was no recycling in this window. It could be argued that Arbeloa and Alonso were, but I think they asked to leave rather than Rafa recycled them.
But how does this mean that we’ll grow our squad? Well. Quality is coming in the door and most of our team already have long term contracts. This means that the current starters will be usurped by the new quality and forced onto the bench as the squad. They’ll be tied by their contracts so they won’t get away for cheap. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kuyt, and Yossi being rotated with some 20 mil stars in the near future.
Sorry for the essay

aquaman-still think that 3 players for the 2 attacking midfield roles isn’t enough mainly because when fit they will all play with benayoun moving over to the wing so the risk is extra i am just talking about a young player which would also help us progress further in the lesser cups as all of our young midfielders are defensive. As you can imagine my views on the squad are massively different with the youngsters firmly included. Gk-reina, cavalieri, martin, gulacsi(very strong) RB-johnson, kelly, darby(think we are set for 10 years here) LB-aurelio, insua(ok for now insua will develop more) CB-carragher, agger, skrtel, ayala, kelly(very strong) DCM-mascherano, lucas, spearing(strong) ACM-gerrard, aquilani(great quality need a young backup) LM-benayoun, riera, aurelio(think benayoun is much better on the left hasn’t got the pace to go outside a fullback but all the skill in the world to come inside beat people and link for that reason think we are very strong here) RM-babel, kuyt, el zhar(will plead my case again lol the opposite of benayoun, babel has all the pace to beat a full back on the outside and can cross as we saw at west ham he hasn’t got the close control to come inside like he has to on the left or that ability to thread a pass of yossi, think babel will go so this is the one place in the team think we need to spend a big amount on a first team challenger to kuyt) HOLE-gerrard, aquilani, benayoun, kuyt, pacheco(very strong) CF-torres, nemeth, ngog, babel(know i have included the on loan nemeth but he is still our 2nd best striker) so personally would sell itandje, degen, dossena, kyrgiakos, voronin i have total faith in the young players i included and would pick them any day over the ones i would sell. Think babels days are numbered so with his money and that of the others listed would spend big on a RM and small on a young ACM. Am hoping in a way that johnson is out on wednesday so people will see like with kelly how good darby is. One undeniable thing is rafa is very cautious trust quality youth!

Hi Aquaman having trouble logging it at the moment, name is johnny barnes, would just like to say your post above is really really great, some interesting points…
i would like to ask who you think would be the best for the postions that you have identified need adding to?
i do believe that we have a tremendous spine of players in Reina, (who is unfortunate to be spanish behind casillas, in ANY team he would be number 1, i rate him as in the top 5 keepers i n the world), carra, (apart from the small blip you know what you get with him, and unlike Rio who has always covered up his basic defensive flaws, such as poor placement and timing of tackles, with his speed, the guy is class. Carra has the best footballing brain in the business, and i know will make a great manager when the time is right), Agger, (oh god we have missed him, i thought we should sell due to injuries but he was outstanding at united, the guy is pure class in the Maldini mould..its not coincidence AC Milan wanted him.), Johnson, (we’re talking about the best rb in england here, this gut oozes class, attacking is a joy to watch and would possible try him at right wing at the moment, defensively is getting better), Mascherano, (Argentinian captain, maradonna says that his name is the first on the team sheet. enough said..is in a dip at the moment in form, but we all know the qualikty he has and the hunting down of players. i hope he stays), Aqualani (i have friends who regularly see Roma, and they say that they had big hopes for this guy to be great, they are very hard to impress, now if they say he is good, believe me HE IS GOOD. plus have you ever seen Alonso attempt a back flip???), and Gerrard and that other spanish guy, oh whats his name Nando’s chicken or something????
Thats 7 world class players, (ok give me a little slack on Aqualani), thats not bad, with the likes of Kuyt, (you have to love a player who will run his heart out for us and keeps at it, what he lacks in skill he more than makes up for in pure heart, if he could some way mate with babel, man the offspring would be amazing), and yossi, (for me that is a older david silva, he is a must have on the squad sheet).. the rest i feel are average players, some i feel can make the step up, the problem we have is if our quality is injured can we still win games???
I am a big supporter of Rafa, however i feel that its the purchases between 3 – 10 mill we’re he’s been really bad… i feel he has gone more with quantity than quality. look give Rafa a 60 mill budget and lets see what he can do, he may buy 2/3 quality players or 9 ordinary ones….
i still feel some decisions he has made regarding players were wrong, for me Warnock was a very good player, and extremely versatile. bellamy should have been given a bit more time, keane should have been given at least a full season, (i know Rafa did not buy him), crouch i still believe was a success at liverpool and still can’t understand why he was sold….
i hope Rafa is not sacked or leave as i do believe he will get us the title.

Retryboy: The whole youth story is an endless debate. For me I’m actually happy with how Rafa works it. It seems as though the youngsters spend a year popping in and out, followed by a year of frequent callups and are then in the running for starting places. I’m basing this on Insua’s experience since he’s the only youngster who’s come through in a while. I believe this is because the youth we had were pretty bad, until Rafa shook them up. I’ll go into more detail on how I see the youth some other time. I’m a little tired at the moment (cop out…)
Thanks Johnny Barnes. Always good to hear favorable feedback (I seem to be becoming quite popular).
Nando’s chicken! At last someone who knows good food. South Africa’s best export. What were we talking about…oh yes football… right.
As for how Rafa spends his budget. I dealt with what I think was his logic in my previous post. If I’m right then we’ve seen the end of him buying lots of 50/50s
Aquaman - November 4th, 2009 at 2:40 am
meh. Hit submit by mistake.
I agree about Warnock. Was also surprised by Rafa selling Riise. Crouch wanted to leave to get first team football (I think Nando’s arrival basically spelled doom for any other striker we had. He only seems to work well as a lone striker).
As for who can fill the holes I mentioned, well this is why Rafa earns the big bucks. I must admit that I was completely stumped when I heard that Alonso was leaving. I couldn’t think of anyone who would be able to fill the hole he left behind. But from what I’ve seen of Aquilani (that pass to Degen took my breath away), Rafa had it all covered.
I also don’t understand Rafa’s wing strategy very well. Kuyt and Johnson seem to overlap really well and regularly put in some good crosses. But on the left its pretty much a mess. Insua tries (and succeeds quite often) to do the Johnson job, but Babel and Yossi are so vastly different that it ultimately boils down to confusion for the lad.
For me though (since we have Yossi to cut inside and Kuyt to cross) I’d get a left winger who can cross (a consistent Riera would do this job wonderfully), and a quick right winger (Lennon would be good, but extremely unlikely). I did say earlier that I’d like Yossi to be used elsewhere though, so maybe a nippy left winger as well (Like a Babel who gives a damn).
For striker, I’d take any 10-15 mil backup striker (ie NOT Villa). If I didn’t think that Bent’s current form is purely confidence based, then I’d say he’d be good. I’m sure there are better options out there but I really don’t know the other leagues well enough to make a judgement call.

Wasn’t any slating in my post aquaman just think 5/6 players are ready to take their place in the squad freeing up money by taking the place players that haven’t made it. Allowing for a couple of buys, seeing the likes of kelly and ecclestone appearing gives me hope this is the way we are going. Sky sports are saying we are ready to bid £4m for koman hungarian left sided midfielder(20) part of the same national side featuring nemeth and gulacsi further proof that these young stars will soon be the make up of the squad. Koman and nemeth’s relationship has actually been likened to that of gerrard and torres taking hungary to 3rd place in the under 20 world cup.
Aquaman - November 4th, 2009 at 11:06 am
I know, Retryboy. I wasn’t jumping on you either.
I excluded the youngsters only because they are untested. I don’t necessarily think they aren’t good enough, I just know that not all of them will turn into the superstars that everyone is adamant that they will. Some will, I’m sure of that, but not all.

johnny barnes here again, i would love to see lennon and Dafoe at liverpool, ah now havinng dafoe would be superb.. i have always been a really really big fan of his, the guy can play as a lone striker as well as a partnership with nando chichen….
Retryboy - November 6th, 2009 at 6:16 am
Defoe wouldn’t get a look in when torres was fit though rafa will only play one striker unless he grows a ponytail lol bring back nemeth we’ll have all the strikers we need to back up el nino. pacheco should have been introduced by now too when we have gerrard and aquilani out which is all the time at the moment its another really creative player for in the hole option if we need benayoun out wide.
