Liverpool are closely monitoring Hamburg winger Eljero Elia, according to reports in German newspaper Bild.
The attacking Dutchman has pace to burn, and with Benitez keen to add some depth to his thread-bare forward line, Elia could well fit the bill for the Reds.
The 22-year-old scored for Holland in the World Cup qualifier at Scotland earlier in the year, and moved to Hamburg from FC Twente in the summer for an undisclosed fee believed to be around the €9 million mark.
His current deal at HSV runs until 2014, and the German side are unlikely to let Elia leave on the cheap to Anfield.
However, Bild suggests that Ryan Babel could be involved in some kind of swap deal as Liverpool attempt to bring the HSV asking price down. (Bild-Give Me Football)
Eljero Elia is one of the hottest prospects in Europe with the 22 year old settling well into life in the Bundesliga after leaving Steve McClaren’s FC Twente. The winger is well known to Scotland fans as he was the man who ended their World Cup hopes with that last minute winner that left George Burley’s side out of the running.
Elia is a quick, intelligent and effective player and if any move for his services could be paid off with Ryan Babel going in the other direction then I am sure that Rafa Benitez and Liverpool supporters would jump at the chance. Babel has been a big disappointment at Anfield and is running out of second chances.
Its a deal that would work well for the Merseyside outfit given their current financial constraints and this source suggests that it could well be a goer.

Yeah but it might not work well for Hamburg. Why would they want to swap a good player for a bad one. Doesn’t make sense to me.

do it rafa please he’d add pace to the squad flair and a few things missing from our team and it gets rid of bable and he’d make a perfect partener to torres them 2’s pace would fuck eny team and if he can play on the right a area which needs some players then even better
Retryboy - November 4th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
Rafa won’t play 2 up front Saif and if he did should be nemeth to partner torres. definitely need another option on the right can’t see this happening though. Player plus cash deals always fall apart on valuations.

if the dip sh*t beneathus would play babs more often, u would see the class he showed against lyon more often, but unfortunantly he plays the hobbit. The thing is too ugly to live, to sh*t to play and yet beneathus continues to play him. What a useless fat peice of sh*t u r rafa

After Babel’s cameo tonight he deserves more chances before the winter window but yes this transfer would be interesting. However, i have heard that Hamburg have already contacted Liverpool fc over the availibility of Voronin, i kid you not. Therefore, i think it would be wiser on Rafa to try an do a deal involving the useless Ukranian as appose to Ryan ‘wondergoal’ Babel.
Ryan Babel - November 4th, 2009 at 10:54 pm
f*****g Voronin!!!!!!!!!!! wouldnt want him to play for the reserves.
Ryan Babel - November 4th, 2009 at 11:02 pm
get voronin out,get voronin out,get voronin out,get voronin out
anonymous - November 4th, 2009 at 11:57 pm
I think babel is class, all he needs is more games under his belt, he lack confidence due to not playing, this effects his overall game, if he buys this player his gonna treat him the same way, not play, i think he shud keep babel and make him into a the star he can be. If rafa gets sacked the new manager will defo keep babel and change him.

Play him on the right instead of kuyt said it all season. Should leave him and torres upfield when we defend corners too that pace on the break would cause havoc. Kuyt is ok but not good enough to be an automatic choice. Voronin scored 10 goals last season in germany so could have been sold to a number of clubs in the summer despite what some people with rafa tinted spectacles chose to believe lets hope rafa has finally seen he isn’t good enough cashes in, brings back nemeth and introduces pacheco into the mix

hey,y dosen’t benitez exchange voronin and babel for elia?at least the odds r better foir HSV lolz
anonymous - November 5th, 2009 at 3:48 am
did anyone count how many times voronin lost us the ball against Fulham on the weekend? Im in Thailand at the moment, and i watched the game in some bar with quite a few Thai Man U supporters who all started cheering when fulham scored! That goon must av lost us the ball at least 80% of the time he had it…. waste of space, and time, and money, and effort, and oxygen!
anonymous - November 5th, 2009 at 11:43 am
Please voronin out
he is not a through chance then why is he given liverpool NO 10 shirt,
please RAFA bring a striker who can play in absence of torres & score goals
anonymous - November 5th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
voronin is pure useless!!! get rid of him quick. we could have won the fulham game if only rafa play benayoun on the right position..behind torres not on the wing.. rafa is losing his head!
anonymous - November 5th, 2009 at 11:53 pm
we should cash in on voronin and babel bring back nemeth but still buy another striker someone like adriano who wouldn’t cost a fortune but is world class and got a lot to prove in europe, i also think if we get any cash in jan we need another midfielder too i’d like to see giovinco come in he can play up through the middle or left/right mid and would be a good addition and not too costly

Sounds good but this is what Rafa could actually do…..
Standard charted sponsor money-20m
Carlsberg sponsor money- Roughly 12m
=32m
Player sales-
Mascherano- As good as he is and as much as I like him, he and his wife aren’t happy there, so he could be sold for about 35m.
Riera- 7m
Voronin
Degen-1m
=75m
So the buying begins,
Bastian Schweinstieger- 10m
Miroslav Klose- 7m
Lukas Podolski- 11m + Voronin
Lorik Cana- 16m
Rafael Van Der Vaart- 7m
plus the fella from above and bring back dam nemeth…hows does that sound people.
Ryan Babel - November 6th, 2009 at 9:50 am
i want rafa to just get Elija Elia(LW/RW)10M+voronin,
Di maria(LW or CF),15M
Luiz suarez(ST),15+Babel
they all have lots of pace and skill and can all finish well which is everything we need in our team to break down teams when they park the bus.
Ryan Babel - November 6th, 2009 at 9:54 am
but actually i think the main thing we need is to sort our defence out if we can get a good partnership between carragher and agger then have skrtel to back up but we should have gotten Sol Cambell as back up back up.

Mr Andriy I’m not arsed we scored in the final minute against our main rivals-so I’m going to sit here, arms folded, not even look up, or even smile, or join in with my team mates Voronin. Give me/us all a break and GO!!!!
