Liverpool have been reported over the weekend about considering a bid for talented Lassana Diarra in January.
Despite building a great partnership with ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, The People newspaper have claimed Diarra is unhappy in Spain and has told friends that he would welcome a return to English football.
The quality in Liverpool’s midfield has been questioned since the start of this season, as well as Rafael Benitez’s position as manager. The quality and Premier League experience of Diarra would be a great signing. However, the price tag for the former Chelsea and Arsenal star is said to be in excess of £20 million.
Liverpool will first have to resolve their well publicised financial problems before such a move can take place, otherwise the only other option for the reds is selling another one of their stars. Currently, Javier Mascherano is the only player that fulfills this criteria as Barcelona once again, will be ready to snap up the charismatic midfielder. (Give Me Football-Official PFA Website)
Now this is a piece of speculation that I would be greatly interested in seeing become a reality. Lassana Diarra is a quality defensive midfielder and a player who has shown what he is capable of on these shores. He is a player that both Chelsea and Arsenal must dearly regret allowing to slip through their fingers.
The French international wasn’t given a fair crack of the whip first at Chelsea and then at Arsenal. In fact in two and a half years at the two London clubs he managed just 13 Premier League starts and it was only at Fratton Park where he was allowed to show everyone just how capable a player he was, so much so that he ended up making the giant leap from Fratton Park to the Bernabeu on the 1st of January.
Its a move that has at times stuttered by now seems to be working pretty well for Lassana, so it’s a little surprising to hear of his unhappiness at the La Liga giants as he now enjoys a regular spot in the Real midfield.
If he really wants to return to the Premier League then it would be a great move for us if we could persuade him to join us. Clearly such a move would appear to have some connection with a potential move to La Liga by Javier Mascherano as I am not sure how else we could accommodate all options.
The £22m rated midfielder would only be a viable option if funds from a big exit from Anfield financed it.
If we did indeed lose our Argentine, and some reports suggest he is very much keen on a move to Barcelona, then I believe Diarra would more than make up for such a departure.

Yeah I saw this earlier, I think Diarra is a class act and is in my opinion better than Javier, certainly better than the Javier we have seen this season. Well worth considering a move for the Real Madrid man if we have the finances to do so.

WHY ANOTHER DEFENSIVE MIDFIELDER!?!?! infact why even another midfielder?
we have Aquilani,Gerrard,Lucas (who is in some form atm) and Mascherano plus some reserves and youngsters aswell so whats the point in having more speculation about a midfielder lol strange!

samlfc – i think he’s thinking of off loading masch and diarra as a direct replacement and not a bad one at that

He is only looking at options should mascherano leave for those of you that haven’t seen Ynwa has constantly slated mascherano all year for the past month at least everything he has said and his performances show real commitment Ynwa just doesn’t appreciate what a star he is. We have 4 real world class players 3 of them mascherano, torres and gerrard the best at what they do in the world and reina gotta be top 10 at least. Would rather we add to that contingent rather than let one go. Sam lfc is right too we have mascherano world class defensive midfielder lucas a capable deputy then spearing and plessis developing its the last thing we need. Attacking midfielder as cover for gerrard and aquilani is priority this is rubbish.

i agree with you both retryboy and samlfc but if he isn’t 100% comitted then i’d cash in sooner rather than later maybe a bit of new blood coud really kick start our season

is this a joke, he is a consistent performer for madrid.. don’t really see them losing him… but if we can get him that would be amazing, mascherano has been playing ok, but nothing special.. plus diarra can be a great going forward.
the closest thing to the perfect defensive midfielder, (makele being the best ever), on this planet..

Interesting! First I’ve heard of this one. I’d be very suprised if Real Madrid would let him go as he’s highly thought of there but if he’s unhappy then why not! Somehow though, I’d be surprised if this happened.
This will be Mascherano’s last season at Anfield, he just doesn’t want to be there. He has played really well in recent games and was again brilliant last night but if Liverpool can get close to the Alonso transfer fee and get Diarra for the fee reported then great. There’s not many players in the world who could replace Mascherano but Diarra is certainatly one of those.

NOT GOING TO HAPPEN, WHY WOULD WE WANT HIM, WHO’S THE SOFT LAD THAT RECKONS HE’S BETTER THAN MASCH, HOW STUPID ARE YOU, IF WE HAS ANY MONEY WHATSOEVER TO CHUCK AROUND WE’D BE GOING FOR COVER FOR NANDO, WE KNEW THAT BEFORE THE SEASON STARTED.
