Andrea Dossena appears to be edging closer to a move to Napoli after his agent suggested that Liverpool should sell in January.
The Italy defender was close to a switch to Stadio San Paolo in the summer, but the deal broke down amidst suggestions that personal terms could not be agreed.
Dossena’s representative, Federico Pastorello, claims wages were not the only stumbling block and that Liverpool did not want to take a substantial financial loss.
The Reds paid Udinese £7million for the left-back in July 2008 and are thought to be keen to regain as much of that fee as possible.
But, with former Treviso player Dossena failing to earn a place in Rafa Benitez’s first team, Pastorello believes it is only fair to sell.
Pastorello told Radio Kiss Kiss: “The negotiations in August were real, but the problem was not only the salary.
“Liverpool, in fact, didn’t give us the green light to deal with Napoli. The two clubs were not finally agreed.
“What about January? He has played less this year and it is clear that Liverpool have to move him. If Napoli want Dossena, they know how.”
Napoli sports director Riccardo Bigon told Radio Marte on Tuesday: “I like Andrea Dossena since he played in Treviso.”
He added: “It’s early to say names and we do not yet have a problem on the left side thanks to (Jesus) Datolo and (Salvatore) Aronica.” (Sky Sports)
So there you have it, it appears we are at the stage where its just a case of the two clubs haggling over the fee. Given the current inflated transfer market, which values Joleon Lescott crazily as worth over £20m, then I would have thought we deserve at least £6m for Andrea Dossena.
When he arrived at the club he was touted as one of the best left backs in Italy and whilst he failed to live up to that billing he still has a future and perhaps he is more suited to the pace and style of Serie A.
I expect a deal will be done in January as it is in no one’s interest to hold the Italian back and risk his place in the World Cup squad for next summers World Cup.

I think 6m is the least we deserve for him.

i can’t see how he was a flop! a flop is voronin and dossena hs done much better than he has!!
if he goes then i wish him all the best at Napoli and thanks for the goals against Man utd and Real Madrid

Hi …samlfc… hope your well?, i must agree i think its a little harsh calling this guy a flop… i think he’s more adapted for the italian league than ours but also Rafa has chosen to go with insua, (who in my opinion is still to young to be +number one right back of choice and aurelio is to accident prone).
i would like him to be used as some knid of part xchange for lavezzi or hamsik if he were to go to napoli
...samlfc.... - November 11th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Digger i’m great thank you thanks for asking
how about you?
and i’m glad you agree with me as i’m withyou as he wasgreat in Italy but just not quite the premier league type
he is still good though and i personally want him to stay as it hink he is good!
Digger - November 11th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
am fine …samlfc… i would like him to stay.. i a ideal world he aurelio would be number one right back with insua as back up. but like i said before aurelio is just to accident prone.
dossena did have a poor first season with us, apart from the goals against madrid and the scum, (hey maybe we should try him upfront?? lol), but alot of players play poorly the first season. i would keep dossena unless mayb we get a high offer which i don’t really see happening or even keep him till the world cup finals as i’m sure his stock will increase….
i am a really big fan of drenthe from madrid and have been since that time he ripped through up playing in the rotterdam cup for feyenoord….

plud he’s best mates with babel so maybe could get him going??? i think we could get him for around 7/8 mill
anonymous - November 11th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
We will be lucky if someone buys him. Why Rafa ever bought him inthe first placehe is just not a defensive plaer

…samlfc…. – November 11th, 2009 at 9:40 pm …. have to agree with samlfc and Digger – November 11th, 2009 at 9:51 pm comments here ……
I would like to see him given a few games on the left especailly now we have the injuries to Albert Riera and Yossi Benayoun…..

Does’nt Lavezzi play for napoli, why dont we try to do a swap although we would have to pay a bit of money as well obviously.
anonymous - November 11th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
No lets not get Lavezzi, your all thinking way too small, we need a few more players with world class potential, for me Lavezzi doesn’t have this (and is already 24) nor does Carlton Cole (just saying) but I think Hamsik does so maybe him but then again, do we really need another midfielder? Maybe and probably an attacking one like him. We should swap Babel plus 10 million for Suarez, he has the quality to be a world beater!!!

Hi Donaven Reid
I read what you said about a replacement for Rafa and I kinda agree with of the 4. Ruud Guillet is a great manager and found and signed Zola for only 4 million!!! I also kinda liked the idea of Zola as manager even if t would be really risky because he is so underrated as a manager and could turn out like an Arsene Wenger type manager (which I wouldn’t mind at all!!!)

i think it would be great if the real football world were like Championship Manager
kermit - November 12th, 2009 at 2:41 am
erm i dont think we should sell doessna, i think left back is our weakest position in comparison to the other top four team, and dossena has never really had a fair go. add to this aquilani is here now also so he has another italian to eat spaghetti with
i really think dossena is a much better footballer than we have yet seen
kermit - November 12th, 2009 at 3:47 am
if i were rafa i d have a serius think about mcgeady for right wing, admittedly he was hit and miss earlier in his career, but watching him more playing for ireland he is uppping his game and i think he ould with the right manager really up his game to a whole new level and when he is on form he is pretty lethal. within our formation he would have a little more license to attack than in a four four two..
another option is david bentley from spurs who we would get for half nothing, he s not a bad player when he is in form either, he has a great cross and he weighs in with goals
schweinsteiger 10 m from bayern, very beckhamesque in his skills , also great crosser dead ball taker and would weigh in with goals
Retryboy - November 12th, 2009 at 9:34 am
Think if we can nearly get our money back on him we should, we need a dominant left back aurelio is the best we have but injury prone, dossena is good going forward but weak defensively, insua is good but his lack of pace is worrying and his crossing is woeful at present he will come good but as i have always said he was far from the best reserve player we had just luckier than the others with the injuries to others in front of him. if we put dossena and aurelio together we would get all the attributes we need in a left back don’t think genetics has advanced enough for us to do that though.

THE CHOSEN ONE.
DOSSENA is a flop in my opinion and well get 4 to4.5 mil tops for him when we sell
Hoogleboogybugleboy - November 12th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
I agree with Retry. Aurelio is our best option but he seems to be made of glass, Insua struggles with pace. I think that had Dossena been given the chance, instead of Insua he would have adapted and would have been 1st choice by now. I would definately not say he’s been a flop. He has good technique and all in all is a really good footballer. Maybe he might get a chance to save his Anfield career with Riera and Benayoun injured but If Benitez can recoup 6 million then happy days.
baggins09 - November 12th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
i think we’d be foolish to sell him unless we’re buying another lb with that cash aurelio is 30 and injury prone, we’d be better off loading him as he is only gonna get worse injury wise, shame really as he fantastic player.
i’d like to keep dossena and play him on the left, as someone has said before that is where he started his career anyway so he’d probably settle better in a more attacking role maybe now is his time to shine, same with babel he’s pretty much guarenteed a starting spot now yossi is injured , i would rather see babel upfront either on his own with aquilani playing the stevie role or with n’gog playing 4-4-2 for a few games and kuyt on the right still
i’d like to see assuming no one has recovered by our next game

kermit ymate a pint on me, i’ve watched celtic a couple of time and think that mcgeady is a good player. he can produce the goods when need be… worth a punt.. i like the bentley too.. but how about just playing johnson at right wiong and see what he can do????
Hoogleboogybugleboy and retryboy how about we get aurelio and dossena drunk and then get them into a hotel room, let them MATE.. then grab the kid and stick him in the academy??? then we would be sorted for Left Back in 20 years time!!!!
On a more serious note, dossena should stay unless a stupid offer comes
Retryboy - November 12th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
Lol bet they would both get groin strains before they finished. Fabio and andrea would like to invite you to the birth… Sounds good actually lol

I was reading recently a point I think Rafa was making:
If you look at our left back position in the squad, the combined fees for these 3 international class players was maybe £9m …Insua (£2m), Dosenna (£7m), Aurelio (Free) (….and still we have Buchtmann coming through but ignore that for now)
You could look at the situation a couple of ways, doing some Mental Maths:
* if you divide it by 3 and say they were £3m each — thats not bad for these players
or
* If you say Insua is maybe worth £5m (at a cheap estimate based on his recent performances in the first team) and Aurelio £4m (Most likely a lot more)
…WE COULD SURELY AFFORD TO GIVE DOSSENA AWAY FOR FREE!!!!
Be rid of him for ever and lose nothing when you look at other players values,
as Aurelio and Insua must be worth twice the original outlay on the 3 full backs combined!!!
…same could be said of voronin. If we got enough to cover the cost of paying his wages since he arrived, the club would be doing very good, and then we would be the ones laughing at the fools who take him off our hands
…We could cut our losses, but it would be nice to get money to bring in somebody good
