With all the continuous speculation about who we may buy and who we may sell I thought it a good time to hand the subject over to you my fellow fans. There are a number of players who have been linked with moves to the club in recent weeks and here are my thoughts on those speculated as being potential Rafa captures.
Rafael Van der Vaart
In theory a dream capture and one that has some chance of happening. The Dutchman has admitted he would leave Real Madrid and fancies a move to England and will be looking for a team that can guarantee him a first team place and Anfield is as good a place as any. Fingers crossed.
Carlton Cole
I like Carlton Cole but I just don’t think this move will bear fruit. Rafa doesn’t play two up front and the West Ham man might well prefer to be a big fish in a small pond, also West Ham now want £20m for the England international and that’s just ridiculous.
Roman Pavlyuchenko
I like the sound of this one. The Russian is a proven top level goalscorer and a forward who can handle the Premier League but just hasn’t been given a decent chance at White Hart Lane. If we can get him on the cheap or on loan to begin with, then perfect.
Lassana Diarra
Real Madrid’s excellent defensive midfielder is a top notch performer but any move for the former Portsmouth man would presumably hinge on whether we lost Javier Mascherano as both players are very similar and I still have faith that the Argentine international will come good and return to the form he displayed last term.

I have wanted us to make a move for Van Der Vaart ever since his time in Ajax. He is a very intelligent midfielder who can play in various positions and he would probably be relatvively cheap considering the situation at Madrid. Pavlyuchenko on loan is a smart piece of business and if it works well a permanent solution might be considered in the summer. IF Babel leaves i would like to see a swap + cash deal with Hamburg for Elia. IF Mascherano wants to leave we should sell him and try to get somewhere around £30M and then we can bring Flamini back to Premier League from his misery at AC Milan, a cheap and smart solution since he has proven his worth in Premier League with Arsenal. Then we would still have money for a player like Mata maybe?

We should sign Van Der Vaart and Klaas Jan Huntelaar/Roman Pav. 3 players unwanted by their clubs, all brilliant, all want to hold down international team places and would help Liverpool greatly and we could possibly sign them in summer!!! I personally would perfer Huntelaar to Pav.

No Babel?! You may wonder. I can still see the potential in him. It is a lack of man management.
Voronin, needs no explenation. Itandje, needs no explenation either. Dossena, hasn’t settled or has been given the chance. Degan,we have Johnson and it’s nice to see youth players coming through in that position. Riera, too much compition if we buy who I would like. Krgyiakos, good cover but if Richards arrives at liverpool then he is 5th choise.
M. Richards-English, Young, good possibly great defender and can score!
A. Di Maria- We lack a future star. He adds creativity and would be a welcome addtion as our first choise wingers (Kuyt and Benayoun) are aging.
L. Suarez-Again, he can create and is young, good striking attributes and he could easily cover for Torres.
Aguero is another option, as is Rafael Van Der Vaart and Elia. Aguero’s price has dipped so he could be withen our financial reach. Rafael Van Der Vaart has no regular starting place. Elia, young creative force. A pattern of mainly attacking players is emerging our defence hasn’t been great to say the least.

These are my tops but in addition i would also like to see itandje+El zhar leave and weigh up the pros and cons of keeping Agger and Mad Masch the last two are players i rate but i think perhaps we could get a swap for Agger-Diarra as real have been mentioned with a interest in the past and with the reported 30+ mill for mascherano we could certainly buy another CB. So with cash left over i would like to see more British players join the squad in the shape of Beckford and Johnson of Boro. To help facilitate these moves im sure we could send some of our over inflated reserve squad their way and if need be improve cash flow by re-signing Risse selling Aurelio and Degen. After all Darby could provide cover down the right.

Anon at 11.30 rafa has spent £239m he has made loads back off sales but they have still given him every penny off sales back and about £20m a year on top so how exactly are they using our money to pay their debts. We have been bringing in between £50m and £100m less than the other big four for years thats why they are getting sponsors, naming rights for the stadium, tapping into the middle east they are working hard to catch up. By the way utd owe the same as us, arsenal bit more and chelsea about 3 times what we owe. Maybe if rafa didn’t have such a huge squad, buy players just to sit there when we have younger, better players he would get more to spend! Dave..you know when people write down all the transfers in and transfers out from benitez and say even though he has spent £239m he has brought back in £156m so only actually spent £83m that means he has had every penny back from transfers plus £83m. and as for signing adriano, that would depend on his attitude and lifestyle, as he was at inter no way, but if he changed his approach to life then he is a monster on the field and i d say definately yes, i d send some spies to check up on him in his life first before i thought about signing him
for now vdv and pav both on loan would suffice

Everyone should start being a little more realistic, with our current form we are not likely to win any silverware this season, confidence is low which is not entirely Rafa’s fault. Any top club who are without up to 10 top players for as long as we have been will struggle. We have NO money and i imagine any sales that take course in January will go towards staving off the debt that is growing at our beloved club. So, we WILL NOT be signing Aguero, Villa, Ribery, Mata, Silva etc etc at all. I sincerely hope Masch doesn’t go to Barca as well because Rafa will not get a penny of it to invest in re-inforcement, and will be forced to play the likes of Plessis consitently which will most likely turn us into a mid-table club at best. Yet, all is not lost, especially if we take this course:
1. Keep Masch’s head at Liverpool, win him over and give him a more lucrative contract, to hell if that means we cannot afford anymore players, imagine if we had no Masch in midfield? Just imagine!
2. Get rid of the deadwood that is eating away at our funds with there un-deserved wages. Sell, Voronin (useless), Dossena (surplus), Itandje (do i have to say anything?), Degen (surplus-although he impressed me somewhat in the early stages of this season) etc. I would say sell the likes of Plessis but his contract has been renewed – which is completely beyond me!
3. Terminate Nemeth’s loan at AEK so as we have more options up-front, although for the time being i would stick with Ngog, yes Nemeth has scored 3 in 7 for the greek outfit, but do not forget Ngog has scored 4 in as many games in a much tougher league. Furthermore, if it was not for the young frenchmen then we would have got nothing against Birmingham as he scored the first and (unfairly) won us the penalty.
4. Keep Lucas – he is steadily improving and it would be madness to sell a player who has finally started to show form. What kind of message would that show to our young potentials?
5. Look at sensible, realistic re-inforcements. There are options out there, i would try the following:
a. Do a swap deal with Hamburg for there young star Eljero Elia, with Babel going the other way. This could well work especially if we were to sell Voronin to them as well.
b. Look at quality loan deals, the following would be perfect: Van der Vaart from Real Madrid and Pavlyuchenko from Spurs. This (if it were to work) is definetly a win-win situation, we would have better depth in key positions and would have a view to a permanent transfer in the summer especially if it were to work. If for whatever reason the players failed to aclimatise then they could be shipped back to there parent clubs…you see!
c. Finally, with our incredibly small remaining funds we could look to sign some young stars such as Koman for around £4m?
Thus, we would have four/five very good additions along with the dross shipped out for possibly as little as £4m. Yes this does depend upon a lot of ‘if’s’ but it is a real possibility, and a chance for Rafa to win back the Anfield faithfull and really show his prowess with some astute businness.
If ‘all of the above’ were to take place then we would have a much helathier looking squad with quality in depth especially in our much needed winger, and striker departments:

God, I hate you so much YNWA. You know who we’ll bring in? Nobody. We can’t afford it. The youngsters will be asked to step up for the rest of the season and, if they do well, will be rewarded with contracts. We would ask for the youngsters coming through (Ecclestone, Amoo, Ayala) to try and follow the example set by Insua and El Zhar – work hard, don’t complain and you have a real chance of starting some matches this year.

Benitez rarely buys players in january so I’d be surprised if any came in but with it being World cup year you never know. I’d like to see Van Der Vaart. I can see Babel and Dossena moving for 1st team football, Degan and Voronin I can see staying.
As for the money situation. Retryboy said it about right above regarding the club moving forward as a business with new sponsorship, marketing etc. The club like any other big business have budgets for wages, new contracts, player transfers loan repayments etc. The transfer budget is the transfer budget as is the wage budget. Money would not be taken from one to pay another. Don’t believe everything that the press put out.

I think we will get cole for £12-£15m and Koman for £4m. Voronin is still a hot property in germany and if rafa can get cole for less than £15m he will let him go, should get £4m for him dossena the same still respected in italy £5m think babel is still 50/50 and it depends on what happens now till january he may end up going on loan to ajax. Really don’t want to see him go without a run on the right but with kuyt being rafa’s favourite he won’t get that chance best he can expect is a few games on the left till yossi is fit. Hansens comments today on liverpools official site were interesting saying he should be starting every game with his talent because we need speed and skill on the flanks. I think flanks(plural) is the most interesting part of that. Obviously someone else thinks kuyt does not deserve to be an automatic choice and we are missing a trick having him out wide. Ecclestone has turned down a contract hope its not because he sees a lack of opportunity and just negotiations because he will be good in the future on the right or up front. The big clear out we all want won’t happen though.

In a ideal dream world…
IN:
1) Hangeland and/or Simon Kjaer (10-12M each)
They will both look to start every game but will have to settle for sporadic appearances at least through the rest of this season. However, Carra is not getting younger nor will he improve for our next campaign, Skrtel is not looking great and Agger has turned out to be a crock.
2) Cissokho or Drenthe (15M each?)
Aurelio lacks the necessary quality and is also getting older. Insua is a great prospect for the future but we need a quality left full back with a good delivery and blistering pace starting every week.
3) Di Maria, Juan Mata or Van Der Vaart (10-25M)
VDV would be a great aquisition. We need a quality winger on the left and we could get him ‘rather’ cheap. Not so sure about Di Maria. He’s proven with Benfica which doesn’t mean anything in the Premiership. Ronaldo was brought up by the scum and did well for it. Mata is a very interesting prospect and would be a great replacement for Babel.

I do not think we need a new forward. We create so much and get a lot of goals from our attacking midfield. If we brought in better quality on the wings we can do really well with the forward players we already have. N’Gog has performed very well in my opinion and though not capable of filling Torres’ boots, he should be 1st choice sub. As some of the other comments have already mentioned we also have the option of bringing Nemeth back from Athens.
More realistically we will sell off Dossena and probably Voronin. The latter will not be sold unless we bring in a new player. At this stage I don’t really see anything promising in spite of all the rumours. Most probable buys would be Van der Vaart and Pavluchenko – and they would both arrive on loan.

Bringing in a couple of players with decent “height” wouldn’t be a bad idea, Lucas, ,benayoun, mascherano, and insua, as good as they are, leaves us vulnerable at set pieces
Maybe a couple of the younger fringe players could be sacrificed to bring in another player who stands a chance of playing, kelly looks to have skipped ahead of darby, spearings all heart but we are already lacking height in midfield with benayoun and mascherano
And the obvious …Dossena (Insuas better, buchtmann looks like a real prospect with Germany), Kyrgiakos (Ayalas and my grandmother are better), voronin (Ngog and babel are better), Degen (Kellys better)

in: ceser villaluze or gareth bale for the left flank. they are young and good potential even though villaluze is too young yet and will need a few years before he can break into the first team but may be for the future and lennon sounds good if we want some one who can play midfield or even the right wing.
out: veronin, dossena and itandje..no offence but i cant picture them playing for liverpool

whats wrong with people wanting David Villa????? we do not play 2 striker up front and it will just be waste of 50 mill pound if we get him and who is gooona pay that amout of money???? may be David Silva for the left wing would be good and he is good enough to play as a striker incase torres in injured or subbed. personally i believe babel can be a decent back up striker even though he is not playing soo well right now but i have faith in him. if he gets the back up striker role every now and then he will start to play better and grow more confidence.

I’m yet to understand why rafa has not decided to move babel forward and use him as a striker, It was a known fact that the lad is a confidence player and when he’s up he’s amazing and when he’s down well he’s horrifying shows no emotion and looks almost bored. He’s quick ( remember him having fabregas) got exceptional ball control and possess a power in his shooting that is undeniable. He certainly should be given the opportunity he’s been begging for it sinse he came and rafa refuses to give him a go or a consistant run within the side. He winges about him being an impact player but hasnt ever allowed him to grow into the squad, this obviously in contrast to someone like kuyt and now lucas and insua, who have all grown into thier own and kuyt is a machine whilst lucas in my humble opinion looks like he’s gonna be special, and insua even though still young shows signs of becoming a good leftback, all have been given a fair go in the side to prove their worth when they have shitters.
