Liverpool Told to Pay £20m for Cole: Is This a Joke?

West Ham have told Liverpool they want £20m for scuttling goal-machine Carlton Cole. (Guardian)
Now I know that the transfer market is a little inflated at present but surely this is a joke, no?
The West Ham man has improved ten fold in the last 18 months and I know we need a striker, either to play alongside El Nino or to play when he is not fully fit, but to consider a move for the England international at that price would be a big mistake.
It is clear that one of our biggest problem areas is the lack of option up top and whilst Carlton Cole is a very decent forward and getting better all the time I am afraid that a) I don’t think he is a top six player and b) he is not worth such a huge fee.
Apart from anything else we are not exactly swimming in money and any crumbs Rafa is handed by Messrs Hick and Gillett will surely be used more sparingly than to throw them at cash strapped West Ham!

If a manager wants to keep hold of a player he will give an inflated price to scare people off just like rafa has done with quoting £14m for lucas. All depends if the player decides he then wants a move and if he starts really pushing then they will get realistic with the price. Could see him costing £15m though. Better ways to spend that sort of money.

Morning Retryboy …..
Totally agree with you, the prices of player are way too inflated especailly when the likes of Chelsea, Real, and now Man City are involoved, althought the £20m for cole maybe a attempted to keep holed for the player the £36m for Angel Di Maria quoted by his club to Man City most definitely is not …..

Pah! I’d love to have Cole as I think he has everything that Torres lacks, but 20 mil? I expect to see it more around the 12-15 mil mark if we’re serious and Cole catches wind of it.
I’d love to see him at LFC. IF he does come then I will join the choirs screeching their “play 4-4-2″ songs.

hahahahahahahahahahaahahahaahhah keep him west ham!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hoogleboogybugleboy - November 13th, 2009 at 3:00 pm
What does Torres lack just out of interest?
anonymous - November 13th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
Matt here!!!
Cole would be a brilliant addition. But I dont think that we have that sort of money to spend on one guy.

Hoogleboogybugleboy: He’s not perfect. No one is. It’s not so much laking as not his strength.
The sheer physical power of Cole together with his height and heading ability all compliment Torres’ ball skills, speed and technique. This together with Yossi and Johnson’s dribbling on either wing and Gerrard lurking just off the scenes strikes me as a great set up.
Plus if Torres is injured then Cole is strong with crossing wingers as well.

Fair shout Aquaman.

Thing is when you look at crouch going to spurs for £10 million then you would expect to have to pay £12-£15m for cole think is most likely out of all the striker targets and would be a good buy but he won’t make rafa play 2 up front might make him consider it when we have injuries. Not so sure a partnership would work either they both play similarly cole might be tall and be able to hold things up but his natural game is not dropping off but playing right on the centre backs using his pace to get in behind. You never know with strike partnerships till you try it though.

Fair point Retryman.
The other problem with playing a 4-4-2 is where Aquilani will play. I don’t know him nearly well enough to judge for sure, but I don’t think he plays outside the midfield (correct me if I’m wrong. I probably am). If he doesn’t then We’ve got 3 world class players vying for 2 positions in the midfield.
Because of this, I don’t see us buying a player as a second striker, but more of an option player if we have injuries or whatever. Doubt Cole would be happy to do this.

Curse you fingers for spelling Retryboy’s name incorrectly!

u make a 2 centre mid midfielders then rafa obviously loves havin a eft winger so have them then u put gerrard slightly on the right but behind cole and torres that wud work then we got even stronger bench too
stevono1 - November 13th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
I would rather have Crew up front, no idea if O’Neil would sell and he’s played for rafa before. When you see the number of crosses we put in on average in a game that amount to nothing. Imagine the aerial threat of Carew, awesome.
BTW can anyone please tel lme how I can have a pic at the side of comment? thanks in advance.

Don’t think cole would mind a place on the bench its such a step up in club and its not like he would be competing with 3 other strikers he would be 2nd in line and with torres injury problems he would get loads of chances. Just think with west ham coming out and saying this that he is our main target. Think aquilani can play on the left as well don’t quote me on that though aquaboy lol maybe this move is to enable torres to have the op he needs as well i know rafa says you can play indefinitely with his injury but can’t be doing him any good long term.

Rafa please buy Carlton Cole is the most in form striker in England is the best,i like him very much.is better than pavlicenko.if you can buy on Lassana Diarra is the best midfielder in the closing.with Lassana Diarra and Carlton Cole are the best.Rafa believe me are the best players.love liverpool from romania

Stevono you get the pics on gravatar.com they don’t actually store pics so you need to have the address of a page with the pic on you want ready or you can upload from your own pics.
anonymous - November 13th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
if were only gettin him as cover for torres then no. If its looking to buy him and play him frequently then yes….but if if hes gona sit on the bench when torres is fit then definately no…there are better ways to spend 12-15m.

What is the point having a strikers with awesome heading abilities without having a decent cross from a winger?
anonymous - November 13th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
just checked the calender and its not april 1st.???????????
anonymous - November 13th, 2009 at 9:12 pm
he’s not worth more than bent
RaNE - November 13th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
no its not april 1st but its Friday 13th
anonymous - November 13th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
I’d rather have Bent for same price we can’t and shouldn’t allow to accept cole for that price.recall nemeth, promote pacheco and sustain ngog then we have enough cover for torres with gerrard, aquilani and benayoun popping up with odd goals.
Retryboy - November 13th, 2009 at 11:51 pm
Just seen the match report for hungary u21 2-0 italy u21. Nemeth scored after 15 minutes set up by simon. Gulacsi made a great save to stop italy making a comeback and Koman rounded off the scoring. So all our men and our target all on song. Apparently nemeth went off injured after 20 minutes hopefully nothing major.

rafa is really starting to piss me off, why would you replace sami with kygriakos? why would you keep voronin? why would you play lucas in the role of alonso? why hasnt he replaced robbie keane? i stated this during the previous transfer window,we need a world class striker. chelsea have anelka-drogba, man u have rooney-berbatov, man citeh have robinho-tevez-santa cruz-bellamy-adebayor, barcelona have henry-messi-ibrahimovic-bojan. we have torres. allahs boot
anonymous - November 14th, 2009 at 2:08 am
mate u r absolutely rite rafa i effed
Retryboy - November 14th, 2009 at 9:58 am
I think he was right letting sami go but instead of trusting the quality youngsters kelly and ayala as usual he bought a 2nd rate player and then had the nerve to say it was to help the youngsters progress. Sure they love the fact there is some over the hill journeyman with a 10th of their talent in the team before them!
anonymous - November 15th, 2009 at 11:19 am
Kop King
Rafa should never have let sami go it should have been carragher being shown the door. Least now hopefully people wil look back and realise sami was the better defender but obviously it is allways an advantage being scouse, excuses the bad bits.
